Learning to sing can be an incredibly difficult process--both physically and emotionally.
I've been through it...
A few days ago, I noticed that one of my students said they were close to giving up singing completely.
So I made this video as a reminder for them and for you that you are awesome.

Thank you sir, my first ever video of you & I already respect you for this no beating around the bush reminder that singing is hard at all levels & it’s a never ending passionate grind that I want to continue for no one else but my own approval. This is the perfect timing. Right now I go trough that phase and it is really difficult since I am really critical to myself. I expect maybe too much from myself cause I wanna be better than I am right know. But no matter how much I struggle I know that I will succeed. Maybe later than I want to. But one day I will succeed.

For myself, I knew I needed to keep singing and to find an outlet for it 40 years ago. I found that by learning guitar three years ago, learning a few hundred songs 🤣 with more all the time and then offering to lead contemporary songs for worship at my church every Sunday. I’m gratified when someone says they enjoyed a song or tells me I sing like an angel, but my focus has turned inward to worshipping God and being God’s instrument or conduit for the congregation. You would think that would be unbearable pressure, but it isn’t. I’m really just singing to God. Simple and fulfilling. Sing for something, some reason that is fundamentally necessary to you. You won’t be disappointed.

LOVE THIS! probably like everybody else commenting on here It feels like you were aware of my current situation and speaking directly to me. first time since I started this crazy awesome journey of dedicating my life to singing/screaming about 3 years ago I actually had a thought of if it was worth it despite the fact I have learned SO MUCH from channels like yours, AND FROM YOURS!!!! every teacher has strengths and I have a feeling your strength would be to find the flaws and know how to fix them??! That's what I see and that's got to be one of the best if not the best quality. I got sick recently In the chest and sinus areas and I'm over it now but, it's two full weeks I had absolutely no practice and it took another week to be able to practice! I feel like there's always a little bit of phlegm on my cords or in my chest, that last little bit I can't get out and when I have (ONCE.... ONE FREAKING TIME) gotten it all out I sounded better and clearer than my dreams could have foretold! Is this normal? should I practice when I'm sick, I know I did one time and it made me three times sicker! like it opened up more areas of my throat lol, which is exactly what I feel like you do when you sing. I also would like to know my actual range, I have many questions lol

Me too. I saw a guitar teacher say that you need to know the guitar part inside out before you sing but my voice was still like a mouse. But I have found it is better to know the song really well by singing around the house until I know all the words and feel more comfortable with the lyrics and singing before I sing with the guitar. It’s two separate things that you can then bring together. But I still struggle.

THANK YOU THANK YOU! On the upside, I wear an above knee prosthesis. (I've been without my foot and ankle all my life but the above knee amputation has only been since Aug 2, 2021) and I've struggled greatly with getting used to it and my goal is to walk normal again and even more so, dance again. I was a dancer all my life until an accident where I broke my femur and a surgeon really messed me up in his attempt at "repairing" said fracture. Anyway, I know this doesn't involve singing and may seem like an odd or way out of place or off topic thing to say but your advice (the three tips) has actually encouraged and motivated me when it comes to getting to reaching my goals with this prosthesis as stated above, and the reason I agreed to an above knee amputation in the first place (To get off crutches and out of the wheelchair which my accident left me on/in for seven years before this amputation, and get back to normal). In the beginning of this journey I thought that like with my below knee prosthesis I'd be able to basically put it on with a little practice just get up and go since I'd walked on one all my life. But an above knee prosthesis is a whole other beast. For example you have to learn to trust a computerized knee that you personally have no control over, and It's been a struggle. To the point of telling myself what's the point, you'll never get there. But your tips have actually made me realize it is one step at a time. So thank you for that.

Just sharing my situation just now, I hope to update one day how things are going. 🙏 I´ve started taking singing classes since Febraury of 2023. So is been a long time since I hold back. I need to develop my own voice, and this journey has make me realize I'd like to go even further, like making a career out of it, since is something that I really enjoy to do. But I'm already working at a job and I'm not finding enough time to do so. It is hard to leave behind the fear to exchange a job in which you reach a certain stability for something that you're passionate about that you finally make up your mind and started to explore just now. I'm still young to have another career (I'm 22), but for some "singing careers" I'm at the age limit, and now i realize i know nothing of theory and have little time left to enter to one of these schools. I could enter to others but I would need to get a great schoolarship to be able to enter and not worry about money. Totally got those days in which I thought I sounded great and then think i sounded awful, but more than that, I question if I even have something meaning to give and to share. Is it even that good?Do I transmit anything to others? Which leads to re-think if I should even try it. I just hope one day to create something beautiful with dedicated musicians, share moments with them and the people around using my voice for that.🌠♥

I am a complete beginner to singing, so I practice everyday non-stop 2-3 hours a day for a year, doing vocal exercises, warmups, researching techniques, applying techniques, I sounded so good and felt confident, but after I finally recorded myself to microphone, my confidence shattered, I thought I sound so good, but I hear is too tension on the neck, mumbling high notes word. After I realize that I was staring at my computer for 1 hour straight, just silence. I want to cry but tears doesn't go out. I want to give up singing cause i think my effort is worthless but I will try again. Thank you.

The best thing that I did was get a vocal coach. It was the small step that I took at the beginning of this month and I am so happy I did. She affirmed my singing range and tone, while challenging me to work on the things that I didn't even realize were holding me back, like my control and articulation. In equipping me with exercises to do daily, and having my coach notice the improvements that I'm making, my confidence is growing.

This is great. I’m experiencing depression cuz of personal issues and singing is the only I do everyday, but I want to be able to sing high so bad… a lot of my friends can sing higher than me without even any training. I have been taking private lessons for almost a year now, and I’m still stuck around G4. It makes me so frustrated and I can’t see myself singing higher ranges anytime in the future. I AM still practicing everyday but it all the videos of others speaking of techniques to extend higher range or whatever just makes me feel even worse. Why can’t I get there?

I know how you feel. I have a contralto-low soprano female range. I would love to hit high soprano notes with gusto, but it’s not possible for me. So I make sure I pore as much emotion and accuracy as I can into the notes I do sing. I improvise other notes on songs that go way too high, and I transpose songs down to better complement my voice. If the performance is the thing, then the last thing I want to do is sing high notes badly and ruin the audience’s enjoyment. After all, how many people have a beautiful, working 3-4 octave range? Not many. Make the most of what you do have. If the other comes with time, then it’s the high icing! Good luck and keep singing!

@atamaminami5752 2 жыл бұрын
Unsure if I just didn't read between the lines in your comment, but what about you and your friends' lowest notes? High notes may be quite sought after but having a good range isn't determined just by the highest note. Whether that's the case or not, link the good energy and emotions that you have to your singing, and there's no doubt in me you'll push through. Your personal life is rough right now and that positivity may be quite difficult to grasp, but if you work to maintain your singing in a way where it links back to the good things that keep you afloat, the positivity and the act of singing with feed each other as time passes. Maybe this all sounds a bit woo-woo, but I truly believe in it. May things get better for you, and keep at it!

How old are you? Lessons worked for me when I was in my late 20s but my range has decreased over the years. I went to ENT who looked at my folds and didn't find any damage. I was referred to voice therapy. I start that soon. I also started taking lessons again recently with a new instructor, but haven't yet seen any increase in my range from the few lessons I've taken so far. I'm stuck on a G#4 in exercises when I used to get to a B4 or even C5. When I was younger, I wouldn't normally sing much above a G4 in front of a group of people though, even when I could get to a B4 or C5 in exercises. Back then, I could sing songs at home by myself that had a B4 or C5 if I was warmed up enough, but not any songs that sustained those notes. The notes were short in duration. In any case, I wouldn't sing those songs with higher notes in front of a group of people. I just sang them as exercises. It will be interesting to see if the voice therapy or the new vocal instructor will help my situation of having a limited upper range.

I'm horrible when it comes to comparing my voice (which I hate) to professional artists and because of this my biggest struggle has been understanding or figuring out what my vocal type is. I know my range, but not my vocal type which makes it difficult to know what songs to choose and improve, and yes I've used his program that helps with that, but part of that involves comparing yourself to professional singers (again, I suck at this) and knowing where your first and second passages are, neither of which I know.

My biggest problem: Singing on pitch! I am not tone deaf at all if i play an easy note in my range on the piano its pretty simple for me to repeat. Singing songs is a whole diffrent story. I would consider myself a bass((bass-bariton) with a range from D2-G4) so singing songs from Johnny Cash is pretty comfortable for example but most songs i want to sing are mostly sung by tenors or barritones. I tried to lower the key of the songs but thats not really helping me why voice is just jumping around in pitch. I often jump whole octaves because its pretty hard for me to find the note the person is singing because the sound of a tenor is a lot lighter and by far not as resonant as my voice. I even took a few singing lessons but even my teacher couldnt really help me with that. Maybe someone here could help me with this problem. Might be possible the problem is something totally diffrent. Some advise would be awesome.

My sweetheart is a bass in a barbershop chorus, and he has this problem too…jumping around in octaves and not being able to pick out and repeat a note someone else is singing but down in his range. I’m beyond frustrated with trying to help him. He can read music. He played French horn and currently plays a guitar. He sings surrounded by people singing the very same notes he sings, but when he tries to sing with me (doesn’t matter who tries singing the harmony), he can’t stay on his part. It’s not that he isn’t musical, but I am stumped. I hope someone has some advice for you and me both.

Thanks Matt. So encouraging. My issue is I've lost touch with actually going out to open mic last 2 years due to COVID and have no real connections with other singers or if I do they are busy doing their own thing. Also I don't play an instrument. I gave up learning guitar after a few weeks as I'm so impatient and found it very hard and the fact it took me away from focusing on improving my vocals. Any suggestions as to how I can sing in public with no backing.??? Most OMs don't allow backing tracks. For the record ive enjoyed singing my whole life. Had some lovely feedback etc.... But... I went back to singing in my mid 40s after having kids really young.., Then I had health issues late 30s to early 50s then when I was well my parents needed looking after. So it's been a haul getting back to my passion!!! And here I am now at the grand ole age of 60 wondering...what the heck?? 😑😑😑😒 I have felt I should just give up it's too late. But I want to push through. I just wanna sing I public and have fun and be good at it. That's all. I have no delusions and want fame. But to be paid to sing would be something I'd like to achieve.... . But Its sooo hard. 😳😒😭. Suggestions?

Ben, have you tried some warm ups like neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, breathing or something before you sing? I have to remind myself sometimes to relax and sing light to start. Then get into the song keeping in mind it’s for fun! Also make sure you are getting enough breath support. Are you breathing frequently enough in the song. This could cause tension. You can have daily focused practice RELAXING, breathing as you sing as an important component in your singing. 👍

So, I'm struggling a bit with timing and syncopation. To try and work on the syncopation, I've chosen the song "My Girl" by the temptations and I'm drilling down deep on the vocals. I'm studying an acapella version where, all you hear are the vocals and finger snapping. I'm trying to recreate that, doing the same thing. I'm Keeping my own rhythm, by snapping my fingers and, singing over that alone. I'm also having a hard time going from singing in my little studio to singing with an actual band. I tend to fall back on old, bad, habits when I get in the room with a drum kit and amplified guitars. For the band scenario, I'm going to ask the guys to loop over a part of a song, that I'm having more trouble with, to try and dial in the correct feeling. I'm hoping this will help me move past the feeling that I have to go at it hard. I can actually feel my throat reaching its limit, like playing a speaker too loud! It gets out of control and the vibrations feel like they're bouncing off of each other.
