I always wondered what would happen if you hooked the wires up wrong. Now I know. I went to a large property that had 300 units to meet the new maintenance director to give him a brief overview of the life of the systems there and it was a whole mix bag of AC systems from 1980s to 2020. There were some carriers, yorks, goodmans, and even some old r22 units still running. I opened 5 different random condensers and noticed they all had the same new titan 10uF capacitor. I thought to myself "That's kind of odd that they all happen to have the same capacitor." So I mentioned this to the maintenance director at the company and he told me that the guy before him was sick of paying $300 to have a $10 capacitor changed so he ordered 300 10uF capcitors and had the maintenance crew replace them all a few months ago. I told him the process of putting the correct capacitor in each unit and they did not like what I had to say so I never went back there. It would be interesting to know how long those units lasted and I'm kind of surprised that they even worked at all.

True but those wire colors are definitely indicative of where they land at. It’s better to learn to read line diagrams and use pictures for quick repairs if needed. And I’m surprised he didn’t keep the video going, would’ve taken me 10-15 seconds to wire the cap correctly

Had a co-worker replace a compressor on a unit and told me that everything was working well. I did the p.m. a month later and the system was cooling 10 degrees. He wired the fan incorrectly to the capacitor and it was running backwards. After I corrected that I added 4 lbs. if refrigerant to the system and it was cooling 22 degrees. Hacks are a dime a dozen and companies are willing to hire hacks because they think they're saving money.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd Жыл бұрын
Interesting situation. Both winding of the fan will be in phase, so with no polarity the fan might even spin backwards, if it starts at all. On the compressor side, both caps are in series with the start winding, which surprisingly reduces the start winding capacitance! So, both motors will struggle to start, draw more current, and die sooner.

I can only imagine what that service call cost with that particular company in Marietta. For people who don’t know a set of contactors are about $12. A capacitor is about $12 and a hard start kit. It’s about $12 when companies charge in Atlanta Georgia $325 to put one on and it takes three or four minutes to figure out what’s wrong with it three or four minutes to change it then I get to finish working on it, they charge for everything they do and then you get your almost $1000 service charge
@atx4fun
@atx4fun Жыл бұрын
I feel the need to comment on this as an ex HVAC tech. People love to point to the costs of the parts and how long it takes. Lets add in the other factors you don't give any value. It takes 3-4 minutes to diagnose because they do it multiple times a day for years. They do it correctly the first time. IF that cheap capacitor that everybody carries fails prematurely, we replace it at no charge to the customer. We carry insurance on our license and businesses. We have a service van full of inventory so that $12 part is immediately available. We also have thousands of dollars invested in tools and testing equipment in that same van. That meter alone is $100 to $300 and the hand tools is another couple of hundred dollars as well. Don't even start with recovery machines and vacuum pumps. When I was doing commercial service, I had probably $2k just in gauges and vacuum pumps because I did work on multiple compressor systems and would do start ups on buildings with more than 1-2 units. I would say I had $10-12k worth of tools on my van on a light day. So if you get a guy that charges you $30 an hour and puts the part on at charge, savor it. Those are the guys that I usually charge double for. I have to undo their fix first and then see what the real problem was.
@donaldcobb6749
@donaldcobb6749 Жыл бұрын
@@atx4fun I agree with you. I am that service technician with the truck unit tools and engages all fieldpiece Bluetooth equipment. I still I’m only on the charge $125 for a capacitor change out. I do this because I’ve seen people struggle with the air conditioner repair bill. I do a lot of work for free for the elderly I charged him $75 to check one out.

If the common was on fan terminal and fan on common, the hermetic side power would potentially be pulled through the fans start winding. Your MFD ratings and amp draws could be all weird set up like that. So depending on how long the unit ran like this, the compressor and fan motor could have been damaged. Megg and amp draw. But if it works, let er eat.

Thank you for being a decent human being and not charging the customer for a new fan like I see a ton of residential companies do (I do commercial HVAC but we work on tiny systems like 1-10 ton for our office people and their houses) good to see your not just in it to make profit on each call like a lot of companies want you to do they want you to find billable problems to make each service call have max profits. Cause we all know no money is in maintenance it’s all in diagnostic and replacements

@XX-qf5zj
@XX-qf5zj Жыл бұрын
You are thinking of it all wrong. There is nothing in that system that doesn’t affect everything else. That’s why you call it a system. If the fan is treated incorrectly for a certain amount of time, it’s being damaged. If you do not give an option to replace the fan as well as the capacitor and give an option to diagnose the rest of the system, then you are not serving your customer to the full. at least a small percentage of the time you will be back to fix it and it could be on you because you did not give the options. You will have a disgruntled homeowner who thinks that you are the hack.

Lmao speaking of manufacturer screw ups... was sent on a warranty call for a water fountain. Fountain freezing the water in the reservoir, and water valve works intermittently... they had power to the tstat, and the buttons to activate the valve are supposed to jump off that to always have power. Compressor should be on the other side so the tstat controls it. They put the compressor to constant power and the damn valve was being disabled because the tstat was controlling it!
