Don't doctors and midwives know the anatomy of the pelvis since they went to school? If they do, then why do they still force people to be on their backs?? 😢

Baby is easier to catch. Many best practices in healthcare are not to prioritize the comfort or safety of the patient but to minimize the risk for providers.

They explained to me as a good way to control and delay the pushing stage since this will help you minimize tears. The technique is to push slowly with warm towels against your anus and vaginal opening. I’m not a doctor this is how it was explained to me.

It’s for the convenience and liability for most providers and not everyone is educated on this.

I am a Dr. but my OB and staff don’t know and even I am nervous about telling them what I am comfortable with on delivery day. So far I have respectfully declined some unnecessary procedures and not only did they lie to me so I would comply but they made me feel uncomfortable or that I am a problem. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a patient who specializes in another field outside of healthcare.

Good job on declining what you are uncomfortable with. They shouldn't have to know your title or profession to respect your decisions. It's shameful that they would lie or fearmonger ANY woman. It happens WAYYY too often because they assume everyone is uneducated...but, not here in this camp. You becoming educated and knowing how to advocate for yourself will pay off at birth. Rooting for you, mama!

This is so wild to me. As soon as I hit 10 cm my nurse said let's start pushing immediately. My first OB appointment this go round I asked if I would have to push on my back because the trauma from my last birth was awful from being forced to do so. I was told it's up to the provider. This doesn't seem right

Hey! I would say try to advocate as much as possible. At the end of the day, your provider isn’t the one giving birth. Unless you have an epidural, you absolutely do not have to be forced on your back. A big reason why I’m going to try to avoid an epidural is bc I want to be able to get on my knees. Fight like hell if you need to, don’t let some doctor make you feel like you can’t give birth. You were born to do this mama!

This is a very common experience in hospitals. It's really unfortunate but not required for you to do again. You should consider another provider that supports your overall goals and learn how to advocate for yourself this time around. You can do it and I can support you through it!

There’s patient led pushing and there’s provider led pushing. You have a choice despite the fact the system does not present it that way. Your body, your birth!

I have the urge to push/my body pushes long before I’m even fully dilated? I get this horrible urge like I need to poop and with each contraction my body is pushing/ I feel like I need to push. I’m pregnant with my 6th and I’ve had two naturally and about to have this one naturally too. I’m trying for a home birth this time around. I don’t have a good hospital to go to.

I wish i knew this 4 years ago. ( Eye opener) I gave birth at a hospital, got an epidural, i never got to 10 cm, i was at 9 , never felt the urge to push, but i was told to push. There was so much pressure and pain, i never felt my daughter's head was already out. Her head was out for some time and i felt like i was just dieing, i was so weak was not able to push anymore until a dr rushed in and i had to have an episiotomy. Few days after my daughter's head was literally shaped like a huge apple, due to all the trauma during delivery.

Hey, I'm a few weeks shy of birthing my 8th baby. Yes you can be on back or laying down for placenta. It's squishy and easy to get out. Not like a baby's head that has to get through bony pelvis

I’m worried about myself. I am 30 weeks. I had 2 c sections. I want normal delivery this time. My question is, back pushing is bad. Why do doctors do that to all mamas???? Mamas end up in pain, tearing and all. Why doctors don’t do the right way? We are going for help. Not putting ourselves in more pain and suffering. 💔💔

Don't push like your having a BM. Worst advice ever. You'll get hemorrhoids and that's not where baby comes out of. Push on all 4s if you can. Push when your body tells you to. Pushing on your back the way the nurses tell you is not the way to push

If you need to NOT PUSH... Chin up as much as you can and blow like you're blowing out birthday candles. Wish I knew this prior to my natural birth. Baby was malpositioned to where the head put pressure on my bowel area and caused involuntary pushing at 6cm dilated. Went far too long before my midwife finally instructed me to do the above. In the meantime I had only caused myself more pain by tensing up in order to "not push" as I didnt know what to do otherwise. Not only did tensing not work, it caused me more pain and exhaustion. By the time I was told to chin up and blow, I was so exhausted my midwife had to hold up my head for me. I wonder if I could have known this trick beforehand, I could have stayed relaxed, in control, and effective throughout my labor.
