I don't know how many times I've explained to people why it's not necessarily a good idea to wait to throw down winterizer until after the first hard frost. It's what they've been taught and they don't want to hear anything else. It's a shame really but thanks for spreading better practices.

well said! apply products at the correct timing to yield the best result with the least amount of environmental impact! I actually stopped applying fertilizer about 3 weeks before my first frost because the grass just doesn't show any signs that it needs any more fertilizer and it would just push unnecessary growth and mowing.

Lots of research out there on this topic. Fall Fertilization Timing Effects on Nitrate Leaching and Turfgrass Color and Growth: "Applying fall fertilizer improved turf color and increased shoot density, chlorophyll concentration, reflectance index, and clipping yield in our cool-season turf lawn. However, no differences in color, clipping yield, chlorophyll concentration, shoot density, or root mass were found among the 15 October, 15 November, or 15 December treatments. In contrast to this, however, the data from this study suggest a potential negative impact to water quality by applying fertilizer late in the fall. Both NO32N concentrations and mass losses in percolate water increased with later application dates. These findings suggest that the current recommendation of applying N in mid- to late November in southern New England may not be compatible with water quality goals. Water quality concerns would dictate an early or low-rate fall application if soluble N fertilizer is used, or no fall N application. Because NO32N concentrations and mass losses were elevated in the fall and winter in this study, consideration of temperature, moisture, and existing available soil N is of particular concern when making fall fertilizer recommendations. More research addressing the interactions of the effects of timing, source, and rate is necessary before optimal application recommendations for fall fertilizer can be made with confidence. Concerns about the timing of fall-applied fertilizer are especially relevant in northern climates where cold weather and high precipitation in the fall and winter limit potential plant uptake and increase the likelihood of considerable N leaching losses." Rethinking Fall Fertilization - University of Nebraska - Lincoln: "Nitrogen in the soil solution is transported to the roots via plant transpiration through a process called mass flow. The higher the transpiration rate, the more nitrogen gets to the roots. Low evapotranspiration during late fall limits mass flow and reduces access to nitrogen. As a result, nitrogen from late fall fertilization either sits in the soil until the grass resumes growth in the spring or it is lost through processes such as leaching (especially in sand-based soils during high precipitation winters). This work has since been replicated and confirmed by researchers at the University of Minnesota and Penn State University."

Great info Turf! I enjoy watching your videos so much. I just aerated and overseeded 22 days ago. I have good germination for the most part but there are a few small areas that still have baby grass sprouting out. My existing turf needs mowing, but I'm wondering if I should hold off a little longer so I don't rip up any of the seedlings. We got two inches of rain last night so I think that's why I'm seeing all the new seedlings coming up. I anxiously await your advice on the mowing.

Really a different game with cool season grass. Different rules for our warm season grass. No real dormancy in central FL but growth does slow down so we can still fertilize with high K though don’t think it’s absolutely necessary.

Solid resource here Rob, nice to see more youtubers use the word "nitrification'. I cutoff urea once soil temps drop below 50, ammonium sulphate is much better for colder temps and natural sources of N can be put down super late for breakdown over winter by all those fungal decomposes that nobody ever talks about. Lots more could be added to all of your points but then again I talk too much all the time. Good job presenting this for edu sake!
