I go with the opposite strategy. I decide where I am going to cut a tree for a "f*ck-it-cut" (or "hail mary cut"), then some time randomly in the next few days I'll run up to the tree and make the cut really fast. The plus side is it gives me time to prepare mentally for drastic cuts.

One thing I learned from watching your videos is the importance of pruning to keep potted trees small. I gained the confidence to try this on my own trees/plants. My oldest bonsai is nearly 13 years one, a ficus started from 3 cuttings in 2008. The roots have fused and got away from me in the early years, but I’m gradually “reforming” them. I’ve also started cuttings from that tree so I now have 3 generations of trees.

I appreciate the daily videos, Nigel, Thanks!!! I love that you’re always doing something different. One day you’re doing just simple updates at the end of videos. Or making Mars soil. Or rebuilding a plant room. Or taking apart a huge greenhouse. Or just visiting trees in nature and talking about what you see. Even getting Julian to do an episode. Now, it’s the daily videos. It’s never the same-old, same-old!

That is three videos on the radial roots of the lemon trees in one evening. Wasn't intentional. A marathon with my wild professor Nigel Saunders om one Monday evening. I loved watching how you went hunting for the soil under the winter's snow. Your poor hands. Thank you again. If I haven't learned something tonight about early pruning of branches and roots from the Bonsai Zone; then............Can't wait to get started!

A relatively late comment that may seem trivial after seeing how much work was done on the roots later in the video, but I absolutely adore the look of the surface roots and the trunk bark, as seen ~00:40 into the video...I've got to find one of these tree's. Great video with lots of reasoning behind your decisions to deal with things the way you did. Appreciated as always Nigel. Be well.

Hi Nigel. I have a suggestion for a special video once a year : once a year you will show and talk about - Worst tree you had to work on during the past year. Best tree you enjoyed most working on during the past year. Most improved tree from the previous year. Number of trees lost during the year, number of trees added to your collection during the year.. Similar categories for pots as well, And other categories you and other people can come up with.

Say. Not related to this video ... But I've been watching some of your older videos recently ..... You grow such luscious mosses!! Some of the best-looking moss I've seen. Any chance you could do an episode on growing and maintaining mosses? Do you collect samples from the wild to propagate them or buy moss? How long does it take for good healthy growth like you get? Bonsai has got me into studying bryophites a bit, but so far I've not had much success in propagating collected moss samples. Be well. Stay healthy and as sane as one can these days. :D

Great videos been following them as you post since I've been getting into bonsai by way of a lemon tree that was donated to me. It's been 'in training' for 4 years in a fairly big pot with potting soil. When do you recommend root pruning and re-potting a citrus bonsai? I also live in Canada, east coast. Thanks!

Hey Nigel I’m having some problems and don’t know were to troubleshoot too, I’m have trouble with my lemon cypress I’m having a lot of dead growth, it’s under a grow light, I recently moved it out of its greenhouse pot to a more suitable pot, I pruned the roots to a third of the original size, I’m hoping I didn’t kill it because the dead growth gets more and more every day it seems. I’m thinking about bringing it upstairs, by a window.

What is the soil mix used here? Pumice and grit? I don't have a greenhouse, so I usually feel safer having some organic soil mixed in to retain more moisture against dry indoor air during winter.

Yes, I've grown lemon, and several other citrus species (mandarin, key lime, Meyer lemon, grapefruit) from seed. It's fun. I soak the seeds in water for three days- do it pretty soon after eating the fruit. Then put the seeds in a plastic bag with a wet paper towel, and wait for them to sprout, then pot them up.

Nigel, I need help better appreciating the lessons of this episode. It seemed like the total pruning was significant. Should I be worried you pruned too much from the top and bottom at the same time? Is there risk that the “vigor” the tree was showing could be, will be, diminished? Where will the energy for budding come from; is there energy stored in the trunk? Does the new root growth stimulated by the pruning lead to better, increased uptake of nutrients? Were the largest roots, those wrapping around and thickest, contributing to the vigor of the tree at all? When will you begin to feed this bonsai? So many things about growing bonsai I don’t know.
@tissuepaper9962

Think about it. Fruit trees do everything in their power to get animals to eat their bits. When the fruit is all gone, animals like deer, moose, etc. browse on the leaves. They're practically made to be "pruned" aggressively. Strong winds snap young trees in half, and they often just backbud and get back at it. If you find yourself with the opportunity to cut down a tree that has been growing in a grazing pasture, count the rings. Oftentimes a little apple tree 2 or 3 inches across can be 30-50 years old, its growth having been stunted by the grazing animals. These trees are pampered in comparison. Plants are hardcore.

Depends on the species, and he pruned the top quite heavily too which will reduce demand in sync with the reduced root mass.

Does the barely-above-freezing soil shock the roots?
@Hope_IsNotMyName
@Hope_IsNotMyName 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would, especially if you used warm water. Soil isn't very temperature conductive, so it shouldn't be an issue if the soil is dry. If it's wet, you might have more of an issue. I've planted succulents in cold soil before, and they did fine. The plant species probably also has an affect on how shocked the roots are, but in general, cold soil is fine.

Few of the bags I have are named "terramix" and it's just a mix of small pieces of akadama, lava rock, zeolite and some other parts. It's completely mineral (not organic?) and I have had the best results with it. I IT IS NOT THE SAME NIGEL USES. But it looks very similar, probably with some organic soil mixed in. it holds moisture surprisingly well and performs well with solid fertilizers

Think of it this way: A lot of what we see in nature is imperfect. With bonsai, the goal is to create the feel of something old, something with a lot of character, something that itself is not necessarily 100% symmetrical or perfect, and to replicate nature. The key to maintaining a good composition is to find a good balance between an imperfect, asymmetric tree and its pot... and in many cases, that might mean the trunk isn't smack dab in the middle.
@katana24
@katana24 3 жыл бұрын
@@FlorenceChandotCAyou have your point, but always I see them this way, maybe one in a while some trees could be in the center. Maybe I'm wrong but my brain doesn't like asymmetric things.
@FlorenceChandotCA
@FlorenceChandotCA 3 жыл бұрын
@@katana24 Nothing is stopping you from seeking your own perfection :) There are foundational design reasons as to why putting something off-center works (especially if the item in question is a living, breathing thing you can balance out further later), but you could certainly plant things how you like.
