It hurts to know that this game is 10 years old. But what a masterpiece. Hope we see a new DKC soon

It’s up there in the top 10. People don’t talk enough about how cohesive everything is. All platforms have a purpose and are designed in a way it makes sense to the level. It’s not like Mario and random block in the air. It’s just masterpiece game design.

They need to give us a new Donkey Kong Country game. Tropical Freeze is definitely the peak of the Donkey Kong Country franchise. I just hope that it's not the last game in the series.

I remember reviewers crapping on games JUST because it was on WiiU🤨. Tropical Freeze is 🔥! Just like Returns, every level is a creative spectacle. 2D Mario has only just recently caught up to DKC level with Mario Wonder.

Tropical Freeze was amazing and memorable experience. Had right amount of difficulty.

Currently replaying this game on Hard mode as DK. Now that is a challenge. Tropical freeze does visual story telling so well. the way the backgrounds in the levels change were amazing and you can learn so much. Everything about Tropical freeze from art style to music to mechanics is a well thought out piece of art. Thank you for promoting the DKC series we need more DK influencers. Also Cranky Kong is the best kong if you are good at the game lol

Shoutout to putting in the disc into the Wii U and hearing that women’s choir beautifully singing “Donkey Kong” with the magnificent pan flute and drum accompaniment. Hearing that for the first time gave me chills.

DKC 1+2 Are some of my fave games of all time. If you've not played it already I would highly recommend yookalaylee and the impossible lair on switch. Plays similar to dkc returns/tropical freeze, and its made by some of the original rare devs. It also has music from David wise.

The first Level of the 3rd island (the African safari world) is pure art. The music even develops during the Level with a finish at the end which brought tears in my eyes. It's so so good.

The name alone Trooical Freeze is legendary and it instantly produced an incredible vibe of the game in my head

We don't get enough of these really high calibre platformers, I'd love to see some proper A grade 2.5D platformers, a new Earthworm Jim would make me a happy man, I'd love to see a 2.5D (or even just 2D) Conkers Bad Fur Day platformer, with the same humour, the OG designer of CBFD (well one of 'em) Chris Seavor made ​the underrated gem "The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup", a fantastic platformer with puzzle elements, if you love Donkey Kong Country, you will love Rusty Pup.

Tropical Freeze is a platforming masterpiece. It got me through the first couple months of the pandemic back in 2020. Sadly i haven't officially beaten it, I got to the final boss tried several times and for some reason I moved onto something else but with every intention to come back to it and never did. Playing that game made realize just how fun platformers really are when done right.

This game is only flaw is not having King K. Rool as a villain, other than that it seems like a great game

Just found this channel. Really thoughtful and entertaining video! This and returns were two of my favourite games of the 2010’s, it’s such a shame that they don’t get talked about that much outside of certain very niche circles. I can’t think of any other 2D platformer (apart from maybe Celeste) which combines visual storytelling, super smooth controls, gorgeous graphics and a kick-ass soundtrack in the way that DCKTF does. Thanks for show it some much-deserved love!

Awesome video. The only Donkey Kong game I played was DKC Returns and it was solid, imo. I loved the color pop in-game and the levels were enjoyable.

King K Rool was in a lot more DK games. There's the original 3, Donkey Kong 64... I'm assuming the Donkey Kong land series to.

I absolutely love DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze. I would say they are as good as the original trilogy, and I MIGHT even go as far as to say Tropical Freeze is BETTER than 1 or 2 games in the trilogy (I won’t say which because it would lead to a fight lol)

It's one of my favorite games ever, and it's been cool to see appreciation for it spread gradually throughout gaming communities over the decade since its release.

The original DKC 1-3 (and Zelda, Earthbound and Mario RPG) were my life back in the mid nineties. I probably replayed each one like 8-10 times. I desperately wanted a DKC4 back in the day. Instead I got DK64.

Wish I hadn’t slept on Tropical Freeze. Bought it day one in 2014 and just never finished it beyond world 1. Should pick it back up some time soon.

Yay finally someone giving this game the praise it deserves, honestly this game blew my mind when I played Tropical Freeze on my Switch and it's full of so much soul and charm. I highly recommend you all watch Game Maker's Toolkit's video on this game's level design because it only made me appreciate the game more. It saddens me to think that we'll never get a third HD DKC game, don't know why. Maybe it was because Tropical Freeze was Wii U exclusive meaning it didn't sell well. I would love it K.Rool was the villain of the hypothetical third HD game, like a surprise villain who's revealed at the end.

This game is one of my all time favorites and know it pretty well. So when I heard cranky uses his beard (@8:54) I had to pause the video and check hahaha it's his cane he bounces with after all

That bird boss was the BANE of my existence - I love the DK1-2-3 games, I am so keen for the DKC Returns HD re-release - I enjoyed the original but HATED that you couldn't play it with the Wii classic controller - it's going to be so much better with a 'normal' controller :) love your videos as always Josie

Absolutely adored this game when it came out. One of the best games on Wii U and one of the best platformers ever. The visuals, the music and the level designs all come together so beautifully.

DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze were awesome games. The best part for me was the couch co-op its so fun, the old games never had that because of hardware limitations we had to take turns on 2 player mode. Kirby Return to Dreamland and the New Super Mario Bros games had really fun co-op as well.

I bought this game on a whim a few years ago on switch, and it's now my favorite 2d platformer of all time. Ok no... Celeste has that spot...

My headcanon is that DK isn't like Mario, the Kremlins came back twice in the main line games, but aside from them, no other foes ever came back. He doesn't do half jobs like Mario, he straight up goes for the kill, he is relentless and Banana addicted he ain't got no more fucks to give

My favourite 2D platformer ever

I've been playing 2D platformers since I was a little kid & Tropical Freeze is my favorite ever. Recently replayed it on Switch & it more than holds up. Perfect game IMO.

I hear yooka Layle the impossible lair is very similar to this game but idk I’ve barly played it.

This game and super metroid remain my all time favorite Any complaints about Tropical Freezes visuals I just do not understand full stop. The game is filled to the brim with fun details (often even animated stories unfolding in the bg and intersecting with the fg in interesting ways), it always keeps things fresh and introduces new ideas and themes constantly (even multiple times within a level), every level also has really intricate a beautiful color palettes. Combine all this with the interconnectivity between the different level themes (like World 5s levels being centered around the production of the bosses popsicles) and yeah, I'd say you have a great game that lives by its visuals.

Wish I got further into this game - it was too hard for me! Normally I don’t give up, and am overly stubborn with platformers, but I couldn’t keep it up. And I’m a huge metroidvania/super mario fan

Honestly they need to bring back the Kremlings for me to want to play as an OG DKC fan Edit: Wouldn’t mind a reboot of the original DKC 1-3… Basically have these games be the prequels to the reintroduction of the Kremlings

I’m actually playing the DK as we speak. If you haven’t played through with Funky, you’re missing out. Also, I’m no speedrunner, but I feel like one getting gold on every level with Funky on time. Attack.

I tried a little of this and from what I played I enjoyed. Hopefully I can ever find an affordable one.

OCARINA OF TIME GOOD

Amazing game! My fav Switch game by far and one of the best 2D platformers ever made imo. Incredible level design, art, and animation that pop on the OLED switch! The levels that stood out the most for me are the African Savanna levels. The bonus 2K and 5K levels are my fav and really test your reflexes! I love challenging momentum speedrun platformers like this. Never played DKC Returns as I never owned a wii or a wiiU so it will be nice to experience the remaster on the switch. Worst part is waiting til Jan 2025. Wish they would release it this fall. I expected to see a new DK game (2D or 3D) get announced but at least we're getting Returns which I herd is also great though not at the TF level

Dkc2 is definitely a very challenging game… you literally had to spend coins just to be able to save!

Replayed it this year again cuz I hadn't played it since it came out on Switch and WOW was I super surprised by this game. Way better then I remembered! Such a great game! Rage enduring sometimes but... was fun nonetheless

It's a shame they never made another game after this, but I guess it's better to go out on a high note than have every drop of quality get wrung out of the series over several derivative sequels

I never owned the game on Wii but I did get it on 3DS. The only problem: I didn't really get a chance to play it, partially because I can't really get into handheld gaming. Hopefully that can change on Switch, as mine is literally always docked to the TV.

Great video like always. Currently I'm trying to figure out which IP to marathon run. I'm thinking zelda 2d or 3d, mario 2d or 3d, donkey Kong, kirby, or metroid. Which would you say is your overall favorite. Whatever you pick I'll play all games in that genre. ^_^

I only had DKC 1 as a kid, 100%'d it on all save slots and eventually would speed run it for fun. But i never played any of the other DKCs! You may have convinced me to start again w/Tropical Freeze!!

Some of the criticism of DKC TF, had nothing to do with the game itself, but the perception that the development took away from a new metriod game. And the trailer for metriod prime 4 just came out this week - 10 years later.

I never played Tropical Freeze but it looks so good. I don't own a Switch but I have plans to buy Switch 2. If it's backwards compatible I'll buy it. I owned the Wii U and I was angry at how it ended. The lack of support due to low sales left a sour taste.

I didn't expect to find a video like this. Also to those who say Donkey Kong Country 2 isn't hard, are fools. Me being a 90's kid, the game was tough at first even with some experience from the 3rd game but any way I got better over time and completely mastered all three Snes titles. Still play them to this day infact. Just to keep my skills intact. Tropical Freeze is also an excellent game while not as hard as Returns, it's definitely more memorable than Returns imo. The Dkc series is my bread and butter franchise. I simply can't get enough.
