Such a heart touching story. As hard as those miners had to work there should not have been families struggling for food, clothes, shoes or anything else they needed. They should have been paid enough to have at least the basics in life. That's just not right. What a good man he was. I am sure that he had a great reward in heaven. Thanks for sharing, Donnie! Hope you have a great weekend and God bless!

Thanks for keeping the memory of Ol Buck and his family alive. As sad as this story was, life must go on . God works in mysterious ways , one thing for sure when you know Christ as savior and Lord, we will see our love ones again . God gave him a purpose in making a difference in the life of others. There is nothing in this life more important than being used by God and making a difference in the life of others. We are a bright and shining light to this world. Thank you Donnie for letting your light shine and making a difference in my life and the lives of many each and every day. God bless you brother.

I’m from a little coal town in southeast Ky. We had one such man and his wife in our little town. He too had been hurt in the mines and couldn’t work. Family and friends did his gardening and helped them with the canning. My dad and his brothers kept them in firewood and coat. This was the late 50s and early 60s. We all called him Big Nickel because his family name was Nickols. He would never let any family go without anything. Money for rent, food, clothing, it didn’t matter what the need was. But his greatest joy came from making toys and and fixing toys for all the kids, myself included. I think sometimes that’s where my wife and I got the burden on our hearts to do what little we could to help others. Now that we’re old our greatest joy is watching those we have touched along the way now helping others as we did. I think back to those times and thank God that he gave us Big Nickel, and how it shaped our lives.

Mr Jason C., Donnie's videos are wonderfull; ever' bit as wonderful as the toys Ol' Buck whittled for the Children. One good Man, consistently an' faithfully making Life more pleasant for Many. And Mr Donnie Laws..., I got to hand it You, Friend...; You're not only a Story Teller, You're a pretty good "Sound Man" and "Special Effects Man", too. In this video, We hear that terrible rumblin' sound and see the Earth shaking as part of the mine gives way... Well and realistically made, Donnie! Just like Buck's hand carved toys. 🙂 Rick Bonner Pennsyltucky

Just the other day I listened to a story about how someone went from rags to riches and back to rags because of a myriad of mishaps and it got me to thinking. The unsung heros do their good deeds in secrecy. Keeps their egos within bounds so they don't get all swoll up with pride. Allows them to enjoy more and appreciate more.. Much can be said about shared joy. That was Buck's reward. Thank you, Donnie.

I read as much as I could find on the Pruden, Eagon March tornado, completely devastating and very unexpected. I even read a story about an old mule that got to a door of a house and when they opened the door the old mule pushed himself inside and rode out the tornado in a cabin. He knew something bad was happening. Fascinating, sad story but what a blessing he became.

I just watched this one. Mr. Laws, you are one fine story teller and this must truly be your calling! I could sit and listen to you for hours. I’m a baby boomer too, right at the tail end, and a veteran as well. It breaks my heart that my parents and grandparents - aunts and uncles, are just about all gone. And it’s up to us to keep these stories alive for the younger folks. I don’t think most of them care half as much about these things as we do.😢 But as long as people like us are breathing, these stories will be kept alive and loved. I sure do appreciate you and your gift and just want to thank you again for sharing!

There must be so many similar stories, men and women doing everything they could to keep their family fed and clothed, and give them some happiness too. Every one of these kinds of stories should be preserved, and it's the essence of America: you work to get what you need, you share with those who have less, because in places where there aren't a lot of jobs, and you have to use your own hands to literally put food on the table. I remember your story about the wild turkey for the holiday: if you couldn't get it, there'd be no turkey.

Brother Donnie thank you for this story. It blessed my heart! This gentleman became what Jesus called us to do - to be like and live like the Lord. People today are so selfish with satisfying themselves they rarely think about neighbors and friends. God bless ✝️

Thanks, brother Donnie, that story really hit me at home, loss an uncle in the mine the same way, slab of slate cut him in half,,,, he was kept in the casket at home for five days and pennies were placed on his eyes, and old tradition,,i was about five years old and I took one of the pennies,,,,, I think that was the hardest beating I ever got,,,, yes them was very hard times back there in Lawrence county, KY,,,, but the good thing is that,,a lot of God fearing people came from it all,,, by eight years old I was singing in a family quartet in churches there about, and God has really blessed me with knowledge of his way, that has helped me escape from the evil world.
