In part two of our four part series on Ayrton Senna, James, Joe, and Nolan dive into Senna’s early years in F1. After his dominance in Formula 3 Senna had a clunky start to his career in the big leagues, largely due to the lackluster cars of small teams like Toleman. However, as we’ll see, Senna’s perseverance would push him on to better teams and better cars. We’ll cover all of Senna’s pivotal races from the 84’ Brazilian Grand Prix to Senna’s fourth race at Monaco!

According to wikipedia, James Pumphrey rented a horse to John Wilkes-Booth and died in 1906. Good to see him come along since then.

Doing a podcast on Benetton would probably be more of a deep dive on Flavio Briatore, a very sketchy character in F1 history. Dude got banned from the sport after he told one of his drivers (I think it was Nelson Piquet Jr.?) to deliberately crash during the Singapore GP in 2008.

Hey, I'm a Brazilian, and I just watched this EP. Pretty good work boys!!! In fact, during his years racing the go karts, Senna was pretty bad on driving during rain!!! He realized that pretty early in his go kart experience and started to practice everytime he had the opportunity. So everytime it was predicted to rain, Senna would go to the track and drive, drive, drive... till he got satisfied with his driving. Senna more than passionate about driving was very very perfectionist!!! Always chasing the best version of his self. Keep up bros I love Donut media!

Jacky Ickx was not necesarily f1's biggest safety advocate ( aside from his le mans sojourn) that would be Jacky Stewart. During the drivers boycott of 1970 it was Stewart and others who advocated for driver and track safety. Ickx was a purist who thought that safety was for sissies and he withheld his support for reforms. Dakar, bathhurst, lemans (x6), can-am, and many f1 victories are among his palmares...Jackie Ickx was a badass!

Fun fact: In 1985, by half season Elio de Angelis was ahead of Ayrton Senna in the championship. This was pretty much because Elio's style was to stay back, let the big guys fight at the front and wait until they had a engine failure or run out of fuel (1985 San Marino Grand Prix). Otherwise, Ayrton was full throttle the entire race, and he was famous for leading the most laps but retiring while leading (fuel or turbo issues). In my opinion, Elio deserves more credit, he was back to back with Ayrton that year, and that's not an easy task to do.

The Benetton F1 team won 1 constructors championship and 2 drivers championships in 1994 and 1995 mainly because in their drivers line-up there was MICHAEL SCHUMACHER... who doesn't need any presentation in the sport, with his all-time record of 7 F1 championship titles. So what's all the surprise about the Bennetton's success parabola??? But, to be honest, Benetton was a pretty decent team both before and after Schumacher, thanks to the skills of its chief engineer Rory Byrne, who's also considered one of the best designers of F1 cars in the history of the sport (later he moved to Ferrari, where he won 6 straight constructor's championships, again in tandem with Schumacher). Usually the bottleneck for small, independent teams is the budget, which mainly comes from title sponsorships and personal investments by reach people... but it's not backed by the big bucks of car manufacturing companies, which can instead spend much more money on the development of ever faster cars, each year. So although sometimes independent teams can get under the spotlight for a while, usually their good run lasts only a few seasons, in the best cases reaching one or two decades (I think of Williams). The most notably exception to this trend is McLaren, which started as a privateer and obtained success really early, and then kept winning titles now and then for 5 decades. But... this in F1 is the exception, as I said.
