On a cold Parisian night in November 1987, Renault President Georges Besse was gunned down in cold blood. Who pulled the trigger, and why? To find out, we explore the history of the American Motors Corporation, and the parallel history of war-torn France. We also explore the motivations driving Jean-Marc Rouillan, the French anarchist behind Georges Besse’s assassination. Why did he target Georges, and how did his death put an end to AMC? We’re about to find out in this epic TWO-PARTER!

40 for a senior executive was REALLY young back in the day, and even now is a bit young for an established company. If your company is a startup, you expect all the executives to be young, but if you're talking about a strongly established company like, say, General Motors, having a high level executive who's only 40 would elicit responses like "Damn son...what'd they do that I haven't done?"

I had a 1969 Rambler Rebel. It was a metallic green. My uncle told me when I bought it that the unibody was pretty rusty and not to open all four doors and jump in at once. Not sure if he was joking but I made sure not to try. He also told me if I ever went into a ditch on winter not to rock it or call a tow truck, just put it in gear and drive it out. I actually tried this going off in a blizzard. Sure enough between the light weight and smooth bottom I assume enabled it to just drive out with no problem. Mine unfortunately had the littlest 232 straight 6 not the monster 454 V8. Everywhere I went someone had a story of their dad or uncle getting a ticket for going 150 mph plus. The front fenders had an unfortunate styling que with a depression formed in-between the hood and a slight ridge or fin at the edge. This allowed water to pool on the front fenders causing full length rust holes. Mine had duct tape running from the head lights to the windshield painted to match the car. It was a good 20/20 car. It also comfortably slept 5.

My first car was an AMC Alliance… in 2000, in Plano, TX. It was quirky, slow but incredibly fuel efficient!!! My high school was only about 15 miles away, but a tank would last a month!!!! 35-50ish MPG. It was about the same size of a mid-80’s Corolla or Civic, but muuuuch more difficult to get parts for. Most spare parts came from Kenosha, WI. I still have the service manual and the parts catalog (mail order) that I would write to for oil filters and a window crank… The interior wasn’t anything fascinating, but it did have a cool warning light system that my dads BMW 528e had. It warned you when washer fluid was low, you had a brake light out, blinker out, due for oil change, etc. (The tape deck didn’t work, but that light warning system sure did)

Fascinating episode; thanks a lot guys for the great work; it did meander considerably, and the backstory (to the actual assassination) was extensive & in parts unnecessary/irrelevant but still i did enjoy it; shame that it built up too long to get to the actual assassination and then it just quickly wrapped up, i felt a bit cheated; maybe i just wanted some mo’ powa’ beby! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Speaking of AMC, their production headquarters still stands on Plymouth road and Mark Twain in Detroit. After Chrysler bought AMC and went bankrupt the building was sold for $1.2 million to a scrapper who claimed he wanted to turn the former production building into a home for children with autism. He never paid any taxes on it and owed around $260,000 before the bank reclaimed it for auction. It then sold for $500 in 2015 with the promise of paying over $190,000 of taxes left on the building.

Great episode. We poke a fair deal of fun at the French, but they truly have their hardcore moments and always did. Lest we forget- without the French, there'd be no 'Merica. But that was more of an Eff-You to the British than a hells yeah to the USA. Anyway, about the AMC TM ownership question, I wondered the same thing. I love the AMX, so I painted a Pensky AMX body for my RC car a few years back. On the body's packaging, it had an "AMC Officially Licensed Product" seal on it. It did make me think. Who's keeping track of IP usages associated with a relatively small, never particularly successful car company that's been defunct for almost a half-century? You guys really should look into buying the rights to it. Totally bizarre flex.

Sacrebleu, non d'une pipe, saperlipopette ! Quel bon épisode ! Love when you butcher french names and words 😂 (I'm french) Great episodes guys, very interesting, thanks ! It is truly fascinating to see how far the story goes... It is strange in deed that Renault's leaders are such unreliable guys, as unreliable as their Renault cars...? 😎😜 I wonder if a company like Renault could have change the automobile landscape in America. The company makes crappy cheap cars, but it is way ahead of others car makers in many ways, and it may have brought small efficient cars sooner in the US. Then Citroen and Peugeot would have wanted their bit too. Altogether, along with the Japanese. I guess we will never know. What french cars do you have in the US ? The AMC Alliance looks a lot like Renault 9 & 11

An AMC's defense, they were still running basically 50's rambler motor technology during trans am. While the big 3 had WAAAAAY more development technology. Kaplans finish in 68 is impressive for a first year car considering they almost beat Ford which had been making the mustang for years. A lot of the ford guys don't really count the 71 win because and I quote, "they bought a championship with penske". You know what ford had done with lemans a few years earlier? They bought a championship with shelby. It's the facts you don't tell

Actually Besse’s corporate Human Resources management wasn’t the reason he’s got killed. He was a part of uranium exploitation in Northern Africa on the France ex-colonial territory while being a chairman of Eurodif. That’s a uranium enrichment plant financed by and founded in cooperation with Iran’s government, who shared with France the same aim - to obtain a nuclear weapon. Still, after the plant’s been successfully launched, France politicians didn’t wanted to fulfill comments under the deal, so they actively financed a civil war in Iran + Iran-Iraq war. The assassination of Besse was a revenge. Besides him, Michelle Baroin, the curator of France strategic interests in Northern Africa, and Rene Audran, senior official of France Ministry of Defence, were also assossinated by the same radicals from Action Directe the same year. That’s exactly why Nicolas Sarcozy were at the crime scenes - he was the initiator of the nuclear deal with Iran. Radicals were trained and sponsored by Iran government. After getting the message, Sarcozy lobbied fulfilling most part of the deal commitments, and couples of days later Action Directe terrorists were arrested without struggling. There’s a much bigger picture, than guys have described
