John Force is the king of Funny Cars… but what ARE funny cars? Why are they called “funny cars,” when the sport itself is deadly serious? How did John Force become the winningest driver in Funny Cars by an insanely huge margin? These deafeningly loud, near-7000 horsepower cars are part of drag racing history, and we sprint through their story… TODAY on Past Gas!

John Force is awesome. I met him for the first time around 12 years old at Englishtown and he made a comment about the size of my feet (they're big). I went back the next year and when I got up to the front of the crowd he was about to walk away and he saw me, pointed me out and goes "Hey, you're the kid with the big feet!!" He came over, brought me into his pits, introduced me to a bunch of the crew while they were working on the car. Now fast forward almost 30 years, I take my son, who at the time was 10. I knew someone and got a meet and greet with the Force drivers. I could tell that he was looking at me like a familiar face. I go do you remember me, I was the kid with the big feet. He is definitely a legend. He remembered me and took extra time with us. Two moments that my son and myself will never forget.

Regarding James' story about experiencing nitro drag racing for the first time. I had a similar experience where my family went to a nitro night at a drag strip. They started off with gas cars to lull you into a false sense of security. My dad and I went to the concession stand before the nitro cars started and were still in line for the first run. Neither of us had heard nitro before in real life. When the first race ran, we looked at each other like, "what the f*ck was that?!" It truly is something you can't anticipate without actually experiencing it.

When I was 7. Me and my family were at the NHRA drag strip in Indianapolis walking down the pit Lane. John Force was driving a big Chevy van and bumped into me knocked me down and almost ran me over. He stopped his van and got out and made sure I was okay. My dad was so freaked out by it being John Force he pretty much ignored me getting hit by a car. He just marked out on the fact that he was getting to meet John Force.

My dad's friend LeRoy invented the slipper clutch drag racing in the nhra way back in the day but got robbed of his intellectual property. I remember looking at the naked girls on the calendar in his transmission shop, next to the Fruitvale Bart station in Oakland. He was using half dead transmissions because they'd slip enough to hook up versus doing a quarter mile long burnout like everyone else. Dude is a recluse these days and stopped being cool with my pops for mentioning this on an engine builder forum but yeah, figured it was worth mentioning.

Can we get a series of videos of James being Big Jim and making increasingly outrageous offers and deals where he ends up being dragged off set at the end of each video and each video starts with him looking increasingly disheveled at the beginning of each new episode?

sound waves are pressure waves, so these cars must make sound waves so powerful you can feel the pressure differentials

They actually do, and very much! My first time at an AHRA event (modern era, but back in the early 90’s, when the engines made “only” 5,000-7,000 HP) I was leaning on the grandstand railing on my elbows. The two cars launched, and the vibrations filling Thunder Valley in Bristol, TN shook the grandstands so hard my vision blurred. So technically my first Top Fuel race was a blurry mess that I didn’t actually see, lol.

Growing up in the 80s, my dad took me to alot of stadium tractor pulls (indoor stadium). The trucks and dragster tractors were blown nitro too. The sounds of those motors are indescribable. You just have to experience it for yourself.

I genuinely don’t think they could do rally cars justice. Those things take STUPID money to even have something considered cheap.
@nickosmond
@nickosmond 2 жыл бұрын
@@deltacharlieecho4732 I could’ve said the same about the off-road trucks and the 350zs they built they weren’t cheap ether we all know that a rally car build only needs some tires and suspension and then you can take the car rallying and there obviously not gonna develop a modern day group b car or wrc car just like they didn’t build a Baja 1000 style off road truck. Or full on sema build 350z sayin it’s expensive is so stupid because everything can be expensive just because you can’t rally for cheep doesn’t mean nobody else should give it a try

Bro I wish Ford still sponsored funny car drivers and teams. Chevy has made almost all the funny cars dressed up nicely with them fancy bow ties. The only ford funny cars I see anymore are the guys just starting out with little to no sponsors
