I love Van Damme. Yeah he was never going to win a best actor Oscar, but God Damme he entertained me throughout my childhood. I appreciate his whole film catalogue, he just loved to act, make money and look good doing it. He nailed all 3, regardless of how you feel about this movie. Van Damme has more acting talent in his right hand then Seagal has in his whole bloated body. I love JCVD.

JCVD was a mediocre actor/egotistical maniac in the 90's, but you're right, he had immensely more talent/charm/acting ability than Seagal

Haha same here (born in 1983). This was near the final days of the dominance of Van Damme and Seagal movies in theaters... after this, both guys still released a few more theatrical "big budget" flicks, but nowhere near their mega releases in the 80s and 90s.

Some Fun Facts: - This was directed by legendary Hong Kong director/producer Tsui Hark. The guy is known as ''Spielberg of Hong Kong'', because he produced/directed more B.O. hits in Hong Kong, than anybody else. JCVD made later another movie with him, called ''Knock-Off''. Both have the typical, over-the-top 90's Hong Kong-style fight choreo and stunt work. During the 90's/early 00's JCVD worked with a bunch of Hong Kong directors like John Woo (''Hard Target''), the late Ringo Lam (''Replicant'', ''Maximum Risk'', ''From Hell'') and did the 2 aforementioned movies, by Tsui Hark. - This movie was supposed to kickstart Rodman's movie career and after it bombed, Rodman made another action movie, ''Simon Sez'', produced by Ringo Lam. That movie was an even bigger flop and would be perfect for a future RedEye Review. ''Simon Sez'' makes this one here, look like Shakespear by comparison! -Dennis Rodman is not the only athlete in the movie, because JCVD was in fact, a high-level competitive Karateka in this youth. He competed with the national Karate team of Belgium, in semi-contact or ''point fighting'' tournaments and later even in full-contact Kickboxing matches. You can find his fight records online, he wasn't a champion or anything but had a pretty decent fight record.

LOL, the part where Jean Claude is stretching....I looked away because it was RIGHT THERE, had to laugh and look back because of your commentary. I also love the part where it looks like Jean Claude and Dennis Rodman are trying to be inconspicuous. WTF? Dennis Rodman is 6'-7, and Jean Claude is 5'-10. Dennis Rodman also is full of tattoos and had dyed hair. No way on this planet would that duo ever be inconspicuous. I'm actually disappointed that you didn't catch that one. J/K Great review. Man, I hope Steven Seagal never dies. As bad as this JCVD movie is, it's nowhere near as bad as Seagal's work on anything, and your voice over of Seagal cracks me up every time.

It was comical like when Raiden from Metal Gear Rising tried to get inconspicuous in Mexico by wearing a sombrero and a poncho. He's a full body cyborg ninja with spiky shoulder pads and artificial muscles carrying a sword that can cut a car in half being accompanied by a big robotic dog with a chainsaw tail trying to be inconspicuous with a ponch n sombrero.

Director Tsui Hark directs and produces some solid Hong Kong action flicks. He was trying to get some of that American Movie Cash. His next Van Damme film, Knock Off, is also spectacularly incoherent and has Rob Schneider. This film had the resources and cast (other than Rodman who was trying but cannot act), but I've heard the language barrier on set made it difficult for anyone to know what they were making. "Can anybody explain that angle?" Coke is it! Coke Saves! Given the number of Coke product placements, YOU may have to list this as a sponsored video. Also, don't forget to wear your Omega watch! Everybody Rodman fights with gets pulled around by wires any time Rodman looks at them. Sometimes the stunt doubles move so unnaturally compared to what Rodman does they look like dummies. The breaking glass is a big Hong Kong thing. They must have the world's greatest breakaway glass industry. If you really need some broken glass AND fighting around babies, John Woo's Hard Boiled. I cannot recommend that enough.

Also, the film's climax deserves the Stephon from SNL treatment: "This final battle has everything: Land mines, crosses, a green-haired Dennis Rodman, henchmen, a baby, The Roman Coliseum, John Claude Van Damme, John Claude Van Damme's stunt double, Mickey Rourke with abs but no sideburns, explosions, Coca-Cola machines on fire, and - of course - a tiger!

Okay, can we take a moment to acknowledge the fact that just because you dive roll across a table that won't save you from an explosion, because, like, overpressure is a thing. Also why don't they just get a sniper? One shot, one kill, hero doesn't even see it coming. Or you have a proximity sensor on the blanket so that when you touch it, it detonates. I would be so much better at killing heroes in movies than any villain ever. I mean you say describing it to a friend but could you imagine being the person who had to pitch the script?
@Etherman7
@Etherman7 2 жыл бұрын
I mean really even if lifting the blanket triggered the baby bomb it should have been instant. The fact that in-universe, the bomb maker built in a 2-3 second delay on his baby trap bomb is just so amateurish 😆. Scriptwriters should hire you to punch up their villains. Might make the movies a little bit more exciting if there's real stakes, right?

4:00 Mickey Rourke wearing shades walking away from an explosion is so quintessentially '90s. 8:40 is even worse than the walking-upstairs-on-your-hands scene in Gymkata. Oh wow, the spy island bad guy is Paul Freeman (Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark) - he always seems to be a good sport about being in some less-great roles, but even he looks pained here. I like how someone watched this movie and said we need to put rodman in Tekken. And thus we got raven.

Random thoughts while I'm watching the review: I remember when it came out and I was 11 yrs old. I was really hyped, cause I liked Van Damme, he was quite popular in my country and many family members liked him (I still remember when my uncle showed me Black Eagle on VHS like it was the greatest thing ever; I have no idea how old I was then though). It's a shame that Tsui Hark had to do this. I really like his movies (though mostly before he did Double Team, his Once Upon a Time in China films [parts 1 & 2 especially] made me interested in kung fu movies). Hummingbirds don't have ***** cause she shot them all, duh. This retiremenent island for spies: when I rewatched the movie few yrs ago I was pretty sure that it was inspired by the 1967 TV show The Prisoner. Which is a really, really awesome show, one of my favs. Fight in the coloseum could be a nod to the cult fight from The Way of the Dragon. And maybe the fight in the hospital was inspired by the Hard Boiled?

Can we hit up JCVD now and see if he will be in the saspatch movie now? That sounds awesome. You know he does the splits and punches that squatch in the nuts!

I have remembered the island escaping scene and the tigers and mines in the Colosseum scene, but never realized they are in the same movie. And did you notice the small and very hided product placement of a not-well known soda manufacturer named emmmm, something Cola. No? Me neither. :D

It's funny how the Rome Colosseum which is huge becomes the Arles bullring, which is tiny in comparison.
