Q&A with a comedian who has entertained audiences with his bad taste and unapologetically libertarian tirades for nearly 30 years.
reason.com/video/2023/08/02/d...
_________
No comedian is as idiosyncratic and outspoken about their politics and their habits as Doug Stanhope, who dresses exclusively in Goodwill castoffs and has written irresistibly weird and readable books about everything from helping his terminally ill mother commit suicide to celebrating the on-the-road debauchery that ended in his getting happily married.
Stanhope has entertained audiences with his bad taste and unapologetically libertarian tirades for nearly 30 years. In the early 2000s, he cohosted The Man Show with Joe Rogan, including an episode where he entered a boxing ring against disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding and took a bit of a beating.
Reason caught up with Stanhope at FreedomFest, an annual event held this year in Memphis, where he performed a characteristically uncensored set that had the audience alternately groaning and laughing. We talked about why he's dreading the presidential election season, how he survived COVID's effect on touring, what he likes about psychedelics, and why he prefers creative independence over mainstream acceptance.

When it was time to go back to his hotel he walked over to the horrible painting of Yakov Smirnoff, took it down, stuck it under his arm and walked out with it. It was hilarious. Doug, norm, Bill but, Dave attel, are the kind pure comics I love. Many of the greats made the turn. They hit this point in their career where instead of commenting on the world, the start prescribing how it should be. Cosby, Carlin, Bruce, Williams, and now even Chappelle transitioned to "public intellectuals" and it's a shame. We got plenty of people out there telling us about the world of shit we are in, but there are very few guaranteed laughs to be had. God bless Doug. 👍

Agreed and it sucks that most up and coming comics now use that as a blueprint to build and keep their audience. I'm not sure exactly how it started or who to blame but I think it's fair to say there have been enough comedy podcasts about wokeness. Norm's weekend update in the OJ era, now that's how you talk about current events 🤣

I agree with you mostly but I don't believe Carlin ever jumped the shark as his observations of the absurd started to focus on the larger organizations of people as they became more absurd and extreme, religion, politicians and the culture of consumerism. Williams was always very sad inside and the world outside seemed like it was getting too harsh for him to stick around which sucks because he was so gentle and kind and we needed more not less people like him. 😥

Comedians are the people who I most feel like writing thank you notes too. I love me some music, and movies, but a good 2 min bit can literally right the ship for me mentally pretty much no matter what is going on. With Carlin sometimes I think the reason I tend to be harsh on him is that he is so sorely missed. Everytime I see some old stuff of his it just illustrates how much we could use a guy like him in the world these days. :D Good lookin out.

Does Doug Stanhope do dark comedy? Well, one of his stand up specials is called, "Before Turning the Gun on Himself". He's a comedian's comedian because his peers are envious of his DGAF attitude and his natural ability to swim in deep waters where they dare not wander. No Refunds was an epiphany for me, and I've been following him ever since. His sincerity is palpable and his bits are self aware and hilarious. I think he is comfortable with his sizeable fan base and a fairly modest homestead in Bisbee. Doug Stanhope has managed to keep his integrity and success in tact.

Can you imagine my disappointment hearing his health is better than mine all these years later. (Joke, calm your tits.) He's very honest for being a libertarian, I would guess a few of the down votes here are from Trumpers being angry that he seems more negative about him than Biden. I've also seen him express doubt about libertarianism working before, I think there is more leftism than rightism in him, especially talking about Hicks etc.

I also like Silverman, Mark Normand, the poscasts of Tim Dillon, and even Jim Gaffigan. My comedy tastes are all over the map. My favorite TV show is Tina Fey's 30 Rock.

When I first heard of Doug (man show time) I hated him, in about 2008 someone gave me one of his CDs and I have been a true fan ever since. Going to Bisbee to stalk him someday 😊😂

Fan since the Wise Acres Bootleg. I agree, Stanhope is like Norm but more underground. Every comic knows him and worships him, but since he's nowhere to be seen, he just never comes up. He's Lenny Bruce reincarnated. Think about it. Lenny Bruce comes back, what would he do? He'd dissolve into obscurity after making a giant impact. Brain Douche FTW

I’m new to Stanhope and love him - nothing under the table. Very risky territory for a comedian and Doug plows right through and he’s solid. We need honest comics not muzzled right now. PC screamers shouldn’t attend comedy shows…Respect.

I love Doug so hard. Got to hangout with him once in flagstaff. I can't believe he didn't snap on this dude interrupting him constantly. Why ask the dude questions if you're going to talk through his answers?! Dear lord!

Surfing comedy zone website and lo n behold, Stanhope, one night only, last September. I couldn’t order two tickets quick enough. I hadn’t been so excited for anything in YEARS, as I was to see one of my favorite comedians live. What a legend and he killed, of course. Hope to catch him again before one of us lies in a box

It starts with Stanhope’s “Fishing License” bit which is one of the most insightful commentaries on what “The Land of The Free and Home of The Brave” landscape has deteriorated into. @41:24 Interviewer assigns a Bill Hicks LSD joke to Mitch Hedberg.

I dont hold this against doug, but having enough money to pay for health care, good healthy food and medicine, would change most peoples minds on living longer. His perspective of a struggling comedian that was broke i could identify with.

Sorry Doug but I have lived through all the same and some more because of being a bit on the inside, that was all just the long march to where we are now which is way worse, even more so because there is the additional element of panic and the reality of actual mass murder and disaster. It is also going to get a lot worse.
