Your engine was probably producing the full rated HP... figure a 20% loss, so that would bring you down from 245 HP ('91 auto) to 201. The limiting factor here is the intake. Your torque takes a nosedive after 3300 RPM. Given that HP = torque X RPM, you can see that as torque drops, HP will drop. If you want more real power, at a minimum you need to get the plenum, runners, and baseplate ported, then maybe run the GM Hot Cam or similar aftermarket cam. The TPI intake was originally designed for a 305 ci engine, and it's undersized for the 350. It will give good performance under 4K RPM but falls on its face after that. The LT1 found in '92 and later engines has 30 more HP, solely due to the Miniram manifold... the same manifold on the L98 will give you the same HP. I have a '91 roadster with the 6-speed. If you want to spend $3K, then a new cam, a new manifold, and new heads, and you'll get 350 HP or thereabouts at the crank, 300 at the wheels. Or, spend another $4K and get a 383 and you'll get well over 400 HP and a car that will do 0-60 in under 4 seconds.
@Doulop
@Doulop 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, nice comment. Thank you! I agree with the torque dropping after 3300 RPM. Very bad drop, lol. How do you do the ported things and plenum runners? Are they parts you buy or what? Thanks again. Merry Christmas!
@johnclifford1911
@johnclifford1911 3 жыл бұрын
@@Doulop You can go to a company like Extrude Hone and they will port your intake (plenum, runners, baseplate). Or, you can replace the TPI with another intake, e.g., the Miniram (that loses the TPI look). Or you can go with an aftermarket system like a FIRST TPI that is like the factory TPI in design but on steroids, and flows 30% more air without porting (and can be ported to flow much more, e.g., via Extrude Hone). I think that on a stock or rebuilt 350 L98, either the Extrude Hone option or the FIRST TPI with the GM Hot Cam would bring you up to near 300 HP at the rear wheels (RWHP), and that would let you run 0-60 in the mid-4 second range. If you can do the work yourself, the FIRST TPI and the cam would run you under $2K. Your engine had 100K miles when the video was made. I'm sure it has more now. If I was doing this, I'd get a 383 stroker short block, get AFR 195 heads on it, call Crane Cams for a recommended hydraulic roller cam for 2500 to 6000 RPM and 1.6:1 ratio roller rocker arms, and get a FIRST TPI manifold. That package would produce well in excess of 400 crank horsepower, and likely well over 350 HP at the wheels. Imagine your car with twice the RWHP, yet it would be tractable and driveable, with good fuel economy if you kept your foot out of it... and VERY fast, about as fast as you could safely use on the street. My '91 L98 has 52K miles on it, and the Hot Cam and a full Borla exhaust. It runs 0-60 just over 5 seconds. My cheap performance fix would be the FIRST TPI intake and AFR heads.

I have to disagree with you on some things, I don't believe an LT1 intake will bolt on a L98 and its not just put it on and get the HP and torque of the LT1 if it was Chevy would have just changed the manifold instead of engineering a new motor. The LT1 was quite a bit different, one difference is the L98 had a distributor in back of the intake and I believe coil packs back there where the LT1 had a distributor above the crank shaft and say what you will about optispark but it was far superior controlling spark then anything before it, so I don't believe the LT1 manifold will allow for the rear distributor. The LT1 also had reverse coolant flow which enabled higher compression ratio and I would have to go out in the cold garage and look but I don't think the coolant runs through the intake but I think it did on the L98. But the real thing is why do you want to beat those 30 year old cars up remember its more than an engine, when they were made Chevy had no intention of making that car to be still on the road in 30 years or over 150,000 miles, it was a little more than 10 years earlier that the odometers only went to 99K. I have a 92 LT1 vette in black rose metallic that 10 years ago was getting close to being a parts car and I have been resurrecting it ever since, you destroy yours and it makes mine just a little more rare and it keeps the swap meets running.
@CzechSixTv
@CzechSixTv 8 ай бұрын
@@jaymortensen642 On the subject of intakes: The LT1 intake can be modified to work on an L98. A few people have machined them to fit small cap HEI distributors. Obviously a TPIS mini ram or FIRST intake would be an easier swap though. The L98 113 heads and aluminum LT1 heads flow basically the same in stock form(190-ish cfm). Combining the TPIS intake and an LT4 "hot cam" kit with some tuning seriously wakes these motors up. Port the 113's with 2.00/1.56 LT4 valves and they'll support over 500hp. On the subject of reverse cooling: Chevy had to bump the LT1's compression up because the heads run so cold. Aluminum heads already retain less combustion heat in the cylinder than iron heads and produce less power for a given static compression ratio. By cooling the heads first, the LT1 really doesn't have a huge advantage over the L98. On the subject of modifying older C4's: There are still guys out there modifying and racing C2 and C3 Vettes. The great thing about fiberglass is it doesn't rust, and with Corvettes being body on frame there's nothing underneath that really can't be rebuilt or upgraded. It not hard, or relatively expensive, to build a serious autocross or road race car from a decent condition C4.

@@ad356 The '93 was a first-generation, non-vented Optispark. Even still, 40K miles is an early fail for OEM. Once you replace it, you'll be doing it over and over again as Mitsubishi and Delco no longer make them. Factory stopped selling new units years ago. Final prices were around $1,200 for the part. $50 Chinese knockoffs are just as reliable as a $600 MSD unit. I hope you kept your old OEM Optspark. @@juliobello4561 I would give it a 9 since nothing is perfect. The biggest gripe I got is that it's not the easiest car to get in and out of if you got a few extra pounds. Once inside though it feels like an airplane cockpit. If you get one get the 2 factory service manuals and the ""corvette fuel injection and engine management"" book. You can find them all on ebay. I want to know how everything works and how to do most repairs myself because we are talking 30 year old vehicles that even though are very reliable they still need maintenance and repairs. And in today's world paying a good mechanic to do your work costs a lot of money. Not every repair facility has knowledgeable mechanics to work on them. A good scanner is extremely helpful to have, I use a Snap On MT2500 found on ebay for a fraction of their original price. Great cars overall and I'm loving owning one. Yes the newest car have more horses but 300 plus a few more with easy mods are plenty for me plus 28mpg on the highway. Good luck if you get one, just buy a nice one , they are not expensive. Don't buy a beater, costs a lot of money to restore, especially interior parts.

5000 + rpm makes ZERO difference in power, that tuned port does ZERO beyond that point. The runner length kills ANY chance of making high RPM power. By removing it and replacing it with a TPIS miniram and a set of inch and 3/4s headers will make more power than anything else you do to it. Adding an LT4 hotcam, Manley 22410 springs, and 1.6 ratio roller rockers and youll easily make 125 horsepower touching the ground. Ive built and raced too many of these Corvettes to waste time on the bolt on crap that doesnt work.

@@Doulop If you are curious of the history here....and this comes straight from GM-Buick engineers, the 86 Vette was 230HP. The 86 Buick GN was 235HP. In 87 Vette was upped to 240HP. The 87 GN, with zero changes in the engine, was stated as 245HP. For ‘88 the Vette was upped to 250HP. See the trend here? Literally Buick was upping the Vette. The sole reason the ZR-1 was made was to smash the Buick GNx. I love the history here. Source for above info, Documentary Black Air. Its on youtube and its cool to listen to the people responsible for the Buick development and part of their drive was to top the Vette. Despite corporate orders not to do so.
