DPF Blocked? Don't Just Do A Forced Regen. Fix the Underlying Fault

A common mistake that is made by mechanics and DIY repair is to do a forced regeneration on a blocked DPF and not fix the underlying cause of the fault so they go around in circles having to do a forced regen again.

I'm a mechanic in Australia that specialises in diesel tuning, diagnostics and servicing. Seems like you guys have the same problems our industry has in regards to understanding and diagnosing dpfs. There are so many workshops and dealers that have no idea how to diagnose and fix dpf issues, their solutions are always just to force a regen and send it out the door. Even simple things like resetting oil dilution every service is something that no one even knows about. Its ridiculous, especially when the most popular vehicles in aus are diesels. Btw, Your videos are pretty much the most informative videos about dpf diagnosing that I've come across, and I've seen a fair few in my time haha

When I trained as a mechanic 50 years ago one of the first things I was told is....If a fuse has blown dont just replace it, find what caused it to blow and fix it first or you will be doing the job again. It applies to everything but seems to be one basic rule a lot of people never learn.

Education should be free. Don't feel bad. I used to explain to all my customers what they had to do and they still gave me the work. These garages need to pay you to give a course. Lack of knowledge is lack of knowledge. I have a B.Eng. from Oxford in electronics and engineering. I am a P.Eng. and an AST Fully qualified here in Canada. I am still going on courses at 65 to learn more. I love your videos even though I have never done a DPF clean. I am ready if I get one.

Hi Jimmy , if other garages are complaining about your videos ? That’s like the vehicle manufacturers complaining about Haynes manuals or any workshop manuals out there to help people save money by doing it themselves , I don’t get it & not only that , we all know if you need any information, it’s all on the net (well most if it is) no matter what it is there will always be someone who shares their problems or fixes , this is social media nation now that we live in so they will just have to suck it up im afraid . I understand where they’re coming from but this is to be expected nowadays . People as we know just don’t have the dough to shed out loads of cash for these repairs some unnecessary like you say a DPF replacement when the real underlying problem is not identified causing the DPF to fail in the first place that can be fixed for a fraction of the cost . Good honest person like yourself makes KZfaq worth watching . Like some have commented, I too could watch every single Vid you post on here ( even if same vehicle ) Ford Transit , Renault / Vauxhall / Citroen / van / car just about anything 🤗👍🤝😅

come on jimmy you are way to hard on yourself, its not your fault there are so many crap mechanics in the business including main dealer mechanics just in it for a quick buck. i have watched all your videos and become quite a dpf expert in the fact that i know the underlying problems that can cause dpf issues, watching your videos you have saved me and my family and friends thousands of pounds in garage bills, and are of the opinion that the vast majority of garages dont know what they are doing with regards to dpf problems, god half of them dont know how to test sensors for faults, so you just keep up the good work and educate these people, they need it. i will always be forever grateful for the invaluble lessons you have taught me thank you jimmythebiz

I left the trade because I was sick of working with ignorant asses, now I am in engineering but on road based vehicles, and it's crazy how the hgv "technicians" I work with don't know dick about dpfs or how they work, they'll do a forced regen on one of the trucks without even taking it for a drive to properly warm up, replace the same sensor over and over again or even steam clean the inside of a dpf occasionally (which surprise surprise doesnt work) lol

Your videos are great, Jimmy! You help both sides by educating those in the business how to do a better job or do it right first time and you help people with the troubled vehicles by showing them how to not get ripped of by someone who doesn't really have a clue what they are doing. I remember years ago a 'mechanic' who was totally convinced that jump starting a 12 volt vehicle with another 12 volt battery gave the vehicle 24 volts!! What you are also doing, Jimmy, is showing that there are mobile mechanics that genuinely know what they are doing and understand what they're doing as well. Too many people just think that knowledge equals power, whereas the reality is that knowledge plus understanding equals power.

Quite right to air your concerns and opinions Jimmy. Those complaining are a bit short sighted. Reputations are important and are built through solid work and customer satisfaction. Your client base is growing because you actually fix issues that others don’t or can’t. Just watching a few videos of yourself at work has given me some key knowledge regards what DPF’s are about etc which is good to know when maybe having to deal with an unknown ‘DPF Tech’ or ‘stealership’ ‘mechanic/technician’. Just got my daughters DPF (2013 XC90) fixed along with a couple of other items that were directly associated with it. We’ll see how long it is before anything else ‘pops up’ but for now it’s all good. Amazing what dropping some ‘info’ does to ‘guiding’ a mechanic or technician into giving the best of service.

Exactly Jimmy. Check and make sure all other engine systems and parameters are working properly. My Civic 2.2 iDTEC did it's own active regen last week whilst driving through town (I thought the engine was breaking down). It felt like the brakes were binding and didn't want to pull properly. MPG bar guage plummeted too. After ten minutes it started driving fine again. I plugged in my diagnostic tool and it showed it had done a successful regen and 0.6g of PM.

A big Difference here is that you are Educating yourself because you are genuinely interested in what you do and want to be the best you can be which is rare in a garage nowadays, it’s lack of training or willingness to learn that is the big issue also. I think the problem is mostly attributed to lack of product knowledge. I was a qualified full time vehicle tech in a main dealer from school until I was 30. Correct diagnostic is the key. You have to train to competently understand these complex emission systems which takes time and money. As you said a decent tech cannot just plug in a diagnostic and blunder through. As a sobering fact...when I worked in the main dealer out of nine techs only 3 of us were fully qualified to national standards . Totally agree with all your comments. Keep it up.

In my opinion there's a difference with being able to rebuild an engine and being able to diagnose. One is an easy step by step procedure and the other requires an analytical mindset. I think the analytical mindset started to dwindle in the 90s when the standard knowledge regarding points/timing and fuelling adjustments became less and less relevant as fuel injection became more popular. I know many mechanics and fortunately they are upfront with regard to their strengths and weaknesses and importantly they know who is and isn't the person to go and see locally. I imagine this cycle will happen again with EVs having an increasing presence on our roads.

The thing is a lot of big garages have expensive diagnostic code readers but they don't know how to use it and when they view things like live data they don't understand it, Fact is you're on a different level and it shows, hence people will travel hundreds and hundreds of miles bringing there vehicle to you for it to be fixed. i've worked in a big garage and when a difficult car comes in all the guys have no clue me included, problem is people are on the understanding a diagnostic code reader will tell them the fault when infact it just gives you a direction to go in

Does using premium diesel fuel like shell v power or bp ultimate help to reduce the chance of soot buildup or is it a waste of money

If there wasn't so much bull shit over pricing & lack of knowledge at mainstream dealers then punters wouldn't be looking for the likes of your service. Your system works nuff said
