You can order my new book 8 RULES OF LOVE at 8rulesoflove.com or at a retail store near you. You can also get the chance to see me live on my first ever world tour. This is a 90 minute interactive show where I will take you on a journey of finding, keeping and even letting go of love. Head to jayshettytour.com and find out if I'll be in a city near you. Thank you so much for all your support - I hope to see you soon.
Today, I am talking to Drew Barrymore. Drew is a talented actress, producer, and director, known for her roles in films such as "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", "Charlie's Angels", and "50 First Dates." She made her acting debut at the age of six in the film "Altered States" and rose to fame as a child star in the 1982 film "E.T." She has since established herself as a leading lady in Hollywood and has also produced and directed several films. In addition to her successful career in the entertainment industry, she is also an author and a businesswoman, with her own production company and a cosmetics line. Currently, she hosts the The Drew Barrymore Show, which debuted in 2020 and has been renewed for a fourth season this year.
Drew shares her thoughts on being more empathetic, which means putting ourselves in others' shoes and treating them with kindness and compassion, why learning self-forgiveness is crucial for personal growth and healing, liberating or freeing yourself from mental, physical, or emotional constraints and can be achieved through self-awareness, self-care, and self-love. Prioritizing ourselves means taking care of our physical and mental well-being, setting boundaries, and making time for our own needs and wants.
It is important to remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup, and taking care of ourselves allows us to show up fully for others.

All this that u are describing of her is ABOUT HER,NOW. But i met her in her early 20s (I was that age too) and she was THE worst ever when it comes to attitude. Everything that she describes she hates now, SHE was before when she was younger. I know people can change for the better, but wether i like it or not, that bad image of her stuck with me and its hard to now see anything else, although i appreciate she changed, that bad feeling stays forever.

when i found out that i wouldn't have another child naturally, i decided to be a mother to the wildlife around me, planting flowers for the birds and bees, refilling the hummingbird feeders, and nursing lizards and whatever i find back to health. i haven't met the right person for me yet. i asked for a soulmate, a highest vibrational match, and i got a dog who is amazing 😍, he is my soulmate. sometimes i wonder if i will ever find that person who can enjoy life with me, and be happy and loving. but maybe that person is me.

Males have a history of heroísm, not abuse. Most females made money in the past through fashion decoration and beauty industries. Something that males did not participate in allot. The gov did not have social or financial safety nets, the family was both back in the day. Raising responsible and capable people was very important. People didnt have the luxury to raise a brat.

Ever since we were children, we've read books and watched movies about people falling in love and living happily ever after. It brainwashes you and sometimes, it doesn't happen. I've had my share of freedom for a while now and I like it. I'm happy with my independence. Sure it would be nice to find the non-problematic love of my life now but I'm not actively pursuing it. Also, please don't envy couples who seem perfect. I know of one couple right now who look picture perfect and they're always fighting.

Best advice, don't go into any romantic relationship with preconceived expectations. If you don't expect anything to come of it, you can't be disappointed when nothing does. Also, always stay absolutely true to your own personal values and boundaries. That right there, is what makes you "safe". Listen to your GUT, it's rarely wrong.

I hope Drew keeps talking about her sobriety. There are so many women who need to hear this conversation. She prob has no idea how many women want, and need, to stop drinking. I have a lot of friends who hate themselves right now, bc they are being invited on dates "for drinks" with men, and are unable to say No, and doing things they didn't plan on or want. They don't know how to socialize, esp. on a first meet, without drinking. A lot of bad men on dating sites are counting on these women to overdrink, too. It's a problem.🤷🏼‍♀

People don't realize that once you use alcohol to self medicate your problems, it is not easy to stop. People who are doing this in their life understand this. One, you don't have another way of dealing with your problems that you find works for you, yet other people judge you on your choice of using it for any reason. Next, your body gets dependent on it, in spite of the fact it is destroying your body. Tendencies toward dependency are passed down from genetics, so it is not all that simple to see why people get caught into this trap. I have to admit that the only thing that stopped me from using alcohol is the fact that if I didn't I would not stop high blood pressure and other health risks, it was clear if I didn't stop, it would be the end of me. Otherwise I believe I would still be doing it. I still don't have anything to solve my problems, yet my mind is clearer to think about things and stop making excuses. I do other things like self reflection, vaping, CBD, time with animals, time with nature. I still have a void in dealing with problems sometimes, I am working on that. I thought I was a functional alcoholic because I didn't drink and drive, I didn't use it during times I knew I had things to do in the day like work, time to meet with people, errands and things I absolutely had to do. After living it, I know that even if you think you are doing the correct things to prevent some issues, you are still not functional. This vice creates problems, it does not solve them. It is simply a temporary source of escapism. Yet, the issues you want to escape from still are there and you still have them at the end of the day. I still want to find ways to escape the ills of this world and my own issues, but if I am honest, I am still here with the things that are not ideal, and I am an idealist at heart. I cannot change the external world that sucks, I can only change how I think and what I choose to do in the moment. I can also find things to balance my life so it is not all about looking at the darkness, but appreciating the good things too. There are still beautiful things if you venture enough to look.

I just started dating again. Instead of a bar suggest a coffee place. Be honest if you are uncomfortable in certain types of places. If he's a good one, he will be amenable. I have friends that invited me to a dinner, some of them are clean and sober now, so instead of bringing wine or beer, I brought juice and tea. If someone is supportive they will not put you in a bad spot. I prefer for a few first dates to be sober. It helps me evaluate how things are going.

Jay’s answer on love is fantastic, where he says to look at all the other people that love you. I just realized that I don’t have to buy into something I don’t believe in. Romantic love is great if it’s real, still too narrow if it controls me or dominates over me being who I want to be.

I once read: MARRIAGE IS LOSING ONESELF IN A CROWD OF TWO. At 77, I've learned that romantic love is the LEAST true and pure love we can experience, because of the way men are conditioned in our culture, which is to be dishonest, not only with others but with themselves. Until that changes, and they learn to honor the feminine within themselves, and remember that they came from their mother, relationships will continue to fail.

Drew was born the same year as I did. ET would not be the same without her magical cute ways and those blonde pig tails. As I've gotten older it's nice to watch her as I too went through my teenage years, 20s, 30s and now late 40s from little girl to woman. Everytime I come across her interviews over the years it feels like that old childhood friend from kindergarten you meet sporadically at diffrent stages of your life. She is natural and herself, which makes her so relatable in many ways and as girl myself I would love to have someone as genuine, loyal, chatty and introspective as Drew Barrymore as one of my best mates.

My partner and I separated some time ago and they were my first romantic love and actual partner. There are moments in my life since then that I’ve found so much joy in not being in a relationship. But there are also those moments where it feels so scary and lonely to not have a partner. Hearing Jay and Drew talk about how romantic love is not as important as we make it out to be gives me so much anxiety. I don't think it's so much that you "need" to accept not having romantic love - it's that we overvalue romantic love and undervalue other kinds of love. The people I've loved the most have not been in the category of romantic love. Other people will have a romantic love relationship that will happen to be the person they love the most. Great love comes in different forms.

@@bianca4829 Thank you. Another thing to consider is that you aren't wrong about feeling scared if you live alone. But even when you get into a romantic relationship, there's no telling when one of you will die. Then what? If you don't want another romantic relationship, you can live with a best friend or a group of best friends and you can be cared for that way. It's a good solution to old age I think.

About 25 years ago, I was at a friends party and Drew showed up. She was there as she knew someone who invited her. I was a regular person not in the entertainment business and she walked by and I mustered up the courage to say Hi. She came and sat down next to me, a complete stranger and talked to me for over an hour. She would put her hand on my arm and was a very warm person. We got into a very deep conversation together. To this day it amazes me that she even bothered to talk to me at all since there were far more "important" people at this party. She really is a gem.

I love this podcast! The fact that with all the abundance of love, it isn't perceived as being enough unless you have a partner or person to share it with. No wonder there's a narrative of being single and responses include: 'Oh why?!' Or 'That's okay, you'll find someone' as if that's the only goal in life?! I've been single for a long time and only now have I truly valued it for what freedom, adventure and love I can bring to all areas and all people in my life. If you took time to read this understand you are deserving of unconditional love. You are unconditionally loved ❤️ the truest source of love is within you ❤️

I am also stuck for the same reason - from the past relationship failures and having been single for 7 or 8 years I am afraid of letting someone in for fear of what they would do to my peace. But I still crave it. and get lonely. But I do also think it is societal pressure dictates that I feel bad about not having a romantic relationship- when really I feel better about myself then I ever did when I was younger. Its sort of confusing. I get the frustration and I know why the tears came so easily for Drew - I totally get it.

Great questions and answers! I appreciate the focus on other types of love than just romantic love. Also, for women like myself who have been told “you don’t know true love until you give birth” it is important not to buy into those narratives. Not having had kids feels like it holds a huge stigmatism as well. The greatest unconditional love cannot be limited or defined to one kind of relationship, but is possible in every relationship and to yourself ❤️

So true! A mother’s love is not always profound and unconditional. I have children and for sure it’s the most powerful, unique and significant love I have and probably will ever experience. However, I don’t have a relationship with my own mother because she has issues, is a very hateful and spiteful person, and I was her scapegoat. She essentially told me to my face that she hates me. So....there’s that. Everyone deserves unconditional parental love but it’s not a given and it’s not always the best or only place to experience deep love/connection.

We had similar “lifetime movie-like” upbringings. That comment on life becoming about the mastery of reaction is so on point. Her and Selena Gomez have some great insight on this balancing act we all have to do (mind/body/self/others) in the face of trauma and chronic ptsd from childhood. Our brains change and everything becomes about making space between the moment and your reaction to process, while also being able to hold yourself accountable (with compassion). This kind of stuff really needs to make it to American school curriculums in a health class. Kids need a roadmap to understand their emotions and the relationship between emotion, thought and action.

as Drew Barrymore stated on her choice to be with herself for 7 years partially due to her daughters. I understood and did the same, not because of the divorce, but because my Daddy died (2005)- he was my protector. My last male engagement was end of 2008, I didn't trust my judgment and needed to protect my 2 daughters. During this time I worked on myself. I'm now ready to go out and share myself with a few others. The giddiness I feel within and how I seek the things/joys I desire is imaginable to me. I am grateful.

I politely disagree, lol. 1. Romantic love has tons to do with biology and our physical needs. 2. Romantic love is the only one that enables society to reproduce itself; therefore it is pedestaled. 3. Our "soul's/s' craving" can be (minimally partly) attributed to our young self's insecurities, immaturity, inexperience, etc. IMHO, love is a life essence and a much broader concept than the narrow one called romantic love.

Loved this. It’s so true. You need to love yourself FIRST. Then everything will fall into place. When we work to understand ourselves and learn to appreciate and respect ourselves, it’s easier to be able to learn to understand & respect others. To be able to treat others as we would want to treat ourselves. So many females were raised that marriage was the goal or dream. Truth is marrying just anyone won’t work. Once you know yourself it’s easier to pick someone that resonates with you. In the mean time, strive to love your life and be happy. Helping others creates more harmony but do not sacrifice yourself. Everything needs to be reciprocal. Balanced.

When she talks about those moments of talking in a circle when she was growing up, it really reminded me of the impact that "Talking Circles" had and still has on me. I am Mi'kmaw First Nation and in many Indigenous cultures, we have ceremonies and talking circles where we pass a feather or object around, and one by one, we share our stories, or we answer a certain question that was asked. Usually, in the beginning, a lot of people are scared to share, as it's unfamiliar. As the rounds go on, more and more people begin to chime in and dance with their courage. It's quite a beautiful experience. Often it's in a tipi, lodge or outside but it's always by the fire. The fire not only helps keep us warm but it invites our ancestors and passed loved ones into the space so they can also support our truths, stories, experiences, struggles or pain. Absolutely loved this interview! The only thing I'm not sure I resonate completely with is what she said about following what feels good and what doesn't feel good. I think this is important information to pay attention to, but we also have to recognize that not everything that's worthwhile or even good for us in life is always going to feel good. In fact, sometimes it might feel scary, overwhelming, and just really, really hard. The key is that it should be moving us toward the highest version of our life and ourselves. I think a better question to ask than "does this feel good," is, is this something that a perfectly wise and loving being would choose for me? That should give you a pretty good answer.
