I went to snetterton few years ago for my birthday. I booked a ride in ex Roberto Ravaglia dtm m3, Unfortunately the owner couldn't make it due to technical difficulties. Regardless I saw a fella with a mint escort cosworth running a pectel standalone plus a swedish dog engagement box. He was happy for me to jump in. The car had 500-600 hp and its the fastest thing I have ever been in around snetterton. I'm not sure if it had a strain gauge but every gear change there would be a massive shock wave followed by a flash that could be seen in the rear view. Cheers dave

Have been watching this build closely as for years I have been watching to see if anyone can run a dct on aftermarket management. You were my last hope, but it has saved me trying to do it. Best of luck with the new box.

I love this update for the E30, from what I've seen and heard the DCT only works well with a standard Gearbox Control Module. You've put so much into that setup too, fair play to you Phil 👏

Excellent work once again. Persevering with a challenge is all well and good, but sometimes the right call is to give up and pursue a different solution. The DCT looked great to drive when it was on form, but I'm sure the sequential box will be almost as good, and WAY less problematic. Absolute win on the weight savings too! Top stuff 👍👍👍

Only problem what he has was htg gcu. with proper controller dct is great gearbox. So many waste they money to Gcu and then blame that dct itself is crap.

Another great video. I can’t believe how many people are trying to tell you what to do to fix the dct in the comments?! Or telling you to put a slower manual in. DID YOU ALL NOT WATCH THE VIDEO?! As the camera was panning around I was hoping it would be a sequential, there was really no other choice. Looking forward to the next vid 👍🏻

Phil, I’m glad you binned off that particular DCT control method, I’ve had issues with mine for a long time. I’ve stuck it out and it’s at a point where I can use it on track but I wouldn’t trust going to the shops with it. I’ll give you the keys to the DCT E39 M5 if I see you on a track day, see if our notes compare 😅

Best place for it. Will never work optimally without the full MK modules etc controlling it. Especially if you’ve used it in an e90 or f80 where they work brilliantly it will be such a contrast on a controller/standalone system. Remember doing a Silverstone trackday with you on it and all you had were issues from that wretched thing.

Phil, you're a man of exquisite taste with the accompanying very high standards and thats why your builds are so good. Most people would just deal with it, cheap out, or just give up. You deserve all the props in the world for having that eye for detail and constantly striving for excellence. That sadly is missing a LOT these days, so to see you time and time again doing what you feel needs to be done to make it right is not only commendable, but should be (Rightly) celebrated Been following you guys from Australia since the forum days, never miss a video

Ha ha I knew as soon as I'd seen the DCT was going in the Bin you had splashed out on a Sequential!! I love a Good Manual but for Track Work a Sequential would be the next level. Still fun to use but more focused👌

Nice. I'm long done trying DCT solutions on this car, unfortunately. I'm not writing off aftermarket control of dual clutch gearboxes completely though. Once I'm confident it can be done, and that I'm not the Guinea Pig, I'd consider converting either the 964 Turbo or Murcielago to PDK.

i was going to dct swap my e30 but the only aftermarket gearbox controller is the HTG and its absolute trash. i bought one to 8hp swap my e92 and it was suppose to be plug and play. it ended up being a total nightmare and destroyed the planetary drum of a built transmission and didnt even have open loop functionality. now i have the turbo lamik tcu and my e30 and my e92 are both 8hp75 swapped. i have a potentiometer wired to a foot cluch that disengages the clutch packs inside the trans basically creating a full sequential manual with working foot clutch and a torque converter. im waiting for my built k24 to stick in the e30 but the zf8hp with a potentiometer/foot cluch is literally an 8 speed full sequential that has a torque converter that will prevent rpm from dropping when youre heavy on brakes. my e92 8hp car is an absolute monster on the track it carries so much speed and is always at peak rpm for power in all 8 gears.. i cant wait to see someone build an actual race car with one .

Others have made it work. One chap sells a kit to fit the DCT from the M4 & has a DCT fitted to his V10 which is fitted in his e46 M3. The easiest way to get it working is to use the entire wiring loom from a DCT car & code out the bits you don't want.

Love the proper sequential! But have you ever driven a good H pattern dog box? I find them incredibly satisfying to use.

I have. I had a Jerico in my 86. If it was right hand drive I may have considered it. Despite having lots of LHD cars over the years I would never choose a manual LHD track car. I can do it, I'm just no where near as comfortable shifting. Maybe because I'm left handed.

I'm honestly surprised this has been such an issue for you guys. The setup has worked elsewhere. Is a bit of a shame and I feel for you. The car is phenomenal when it works. The sequential is going to be amazing though 👌🏻 I'll gladly have the DCT & Controller....shipping might be a struggle though 😂✌🏻

It can 'work' okay for others. But do they track their car? Do it for more than 5 trackdays and still have a working car with no 'recallibration' or firmware upgrade and retune. & finally do they actually know how a DCT should feel?

🙋🏻‍♂️ 5 track days ive driven too and from this year (most 500 odd mile round trips) and 14000 miles total dailying my DCT converted car with a GCU. The track mappings the easy bit, getting it to be nice on the road at slow speeds is the real tricky bit

Aren't there billet race "flex discs" that adapt between the two patterns? I think RevShift has one?. I never understood why its called a propshaft, cars dont have propellers.

Was the dct helical gears? The appeal of the whine off straight cuts has wained over the years but they do work.

I've no idea what dme/dkg combination is in this vehicle but I can tell you as a matter of fact an oem dme/dkg combo interfaced properly works 100% reliable as it does in the road cars it came in. Problems come from people. It's a shame you were unable to get the support you need to make it work as simply put nothing comes close to controlling these products as the equipment which was made to do so.

Since your going full race car get rid of the gearbox donut and replace it with universal joint problem will be fixed prop shaft shop should be able to supply it

I'd rather keep the flex disc if I can. It takes a bit of shock out of the drivetrain which can save wear & breakage on a lot of components. There is no advantage in removing it at this power level.

Yeah, unfortunately DCT's don't seem to transfer well to other cars although there are aftermarket DCT's with their own control units but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Phil, do you find you like one of your track machines more than the other? i.e., the GT3 over the Bimmer? I realize the GT3 isn't specific for the track, but considering what you've used ON the track....

Phil have you considered an 8hp? Turbo lamic makes a gearbox controller that will be plug and play. I think an 8hp would suit the car. Check out the KZfaq channel zero to 60. He put on in his drift car.

Craig has one going in the K24 RX8. Personally I have no interest at all in them for a track car. But appreciate they are good for road & drag stuff.

I can see why you’re over aftermarket gearbox controllers. I fought with a GCU for over a year breaking two 8HPs before swapping to a Lamik which has been working well for over a year (in a road car) I’m interested, was there ever an option to run the DCT with the OEM controller or were there too many signals missing now it’s out the e9x chassis? Or was it just like going backwards and having to source another gearbox with the OEM controller still inside? Great vid as always, I’m sure that Drenth will be awesome! Looking forward to see this car ripping!

@@driftworks but you hadnt had it like the virtual clutch setup that andrew built or at least covered with dan on his channel. Thats what you want in a drifter. Maybe the hogh revs of the s65 is the only excuse to be honest against an 8hp. But from any other pov i think the driftsetup from turbolamik might even turn your head.
