That tool rest hack is clever. I have lathed parts on hand drill and presses, so I will probably use your improvement sooner or later.

Next time clamp a wood block to the base with a 1/2" hole in it. Your deflection should be minimized! Nice hack!

Dayum came up with an idea of using that since i do not have lathe but you beat it to me dang nice work anyway the precision could be better if you were to make a more rigid setup but at an affordable price you could also use sandpaper to finely remove the material finely thus being able have a tighter tolerance

You show using a lathe in some videos. What type lathe? Looking to start playing around with metal work for a hobby.

hi with a bench grinder you can shape a drill bit to a lathe cutter shape to make nice chips. the file only makes a big mess, you need a steady tool post, and also if you can put a simple jacobs chuck at the bottom with a pointy bit to support your work piece and avoid damaging your spindle bearings. in any case the spining piece and the cutting tool need to be as steady as possible. also faceshield/glasses mandatory. some people install xy milling tables on their drills. today you can build a simple one with linear rails or whatever parts u find on bangood/ebay, and also simple leadscrew with corresponding nuts with no backlash to control the chariot's position.

A bearing at the bottom of the rod in anything might help , why don't we make a cradle and lay the press on it's side, I've been thinking of that

that is kind of weak even for one of us poor folk, chuck up a threaded rod with a couple washers and lock nuts to hold the busing material in place and use an angle grinder with a fine grit to flapper disk to take the material down, no pressure with angle grinder so no deflection, i do it that way all the time!
