We've talked before about the creative failures of the MCU Phase 4, but what we haven't addressed are the bigger changes and power struggles going on behind the scenes at Marvel that caused so much damage.

I said this before and I’ll say it again, I have no more sympathy for Disney. They lost themselves in their quest to appease the unappeasable and ended up ostracizing the people who were already relatively pleased with where Marvel was going before Endgame. They also totally and utterly ruined Star Wars (which was doing relatively fine prior to Disney getting a hold of it) as an IP. There’s also plenty of other Intellectual properties and franchises they absolutely obliterated that I haven’t listed yet because the list just goes on and on and on. They are the architect of their own failures and at this point, the only thing they can do to bring me any kind of joy from them is wither away. That way, newer entertainment companies with ENTERTAINMENT as their top priority can fill the void in our hearts and minds that Disney left in its wake.

Disney thought and was correct in the thought process that they had established a huge massive global fan base and were making billions per picture. So they thought they have the entire world hooked so now its time to insert THE MESSAGE so it can reach as many of the masses as possible and they succeeded because the casuals still lap this stuff up. Hollywood is no longer afraid these days to fill movies with THE MESSAGE and make it blatant and not care at all. But in the early days of this stuff they would market a movie as being about a male action hero and the first 20 to 30 minutes would usually be great fun BUT then they would introduce one or several "stronk, stunning, brave and independent etc women" and all the joy and the fun would be sucked out of the movie. But Their trick worked they got everybody engrossed with the first 20 to 30 minutes only to then hit you with THE MESSAGE

@@luismedrano6680 5.7 billion for the ENTIRETY of phase 4? I find that hard to believe. If it's true phase 4 is a bigger failure than I ever imagined. Top gun Maverick alone made 1.48 billion this year and it's a legacy sequel to an 80s movie that no one expected to be good. It succeeded mostly through Tom Cruise's star power and word of mouth and it definitely did not have the brand recognition and marketing money that Disney and Marvel have. How bout Avatar 2? It's a sequel to a movie from 13 years ago. It made a billion in just the first few weeks. Apart from the writing and directing being poor, the things that ruined phase 4 were not addressing the snap and snap back. I've said it a million times, people, even normies were waiting and wondering how the world In the mcu would deal with and change with such a massive, historical, mind boggling, life changing event. We all imagined how their lives would be affected because we all imagine how we'd be affected. All we got was some kids had to repeat a year at school, some hipsters got kicked out of their houses because the real owner came back and they've opened a new ice cream shop franchise. It's insane to just brush it under the carpet and move on. Now any future events won't matter because we all know that it'll be a minor inconvenience to the people of the mcu when it's over. That leads to the f**King giant celestial sticking out of earth that no one's bothered about. Another life changing history making event that doesn't matter. The whole point of these movies and TV shows are connected. And the other thing is not capping the phase off with a team up. No excuse for this one. I don't think any team up was planned and pushed back. It's so stupid. It's what made each phase. If a few of the films were crap then you know you were still leading to something like a team up then each team up was leading to the biggest team up during end game. Not having that just left you with the truth thst the individual films aren't that good and mostly haven't been that good in any phase. They're just worse now because the writing is atrocious and usually filled with the message. At least in the other phases they were just finding their feet and you did get some really good ones when handled properly. Nuff said.

Phase 4 turned out to be an attempt at pushing the limits on how much of entertainment can be removed from their IPs, and be replaced by "messages", without the loss of profit and or possibly even raising them. But their decisions and their outcomes were so obvious from the start that it truly confused me. we all watched them needlessly struggle while trying methods that were either had been attempted and failed, or they were so bad that they weren't even worth a try. Regardless, we must congratulate them on being able to waste all this time, money, IP, respect, fan, and revenue. How to ruine your business 101

Even worse, losing half of the population caused such severe depression and affected them so much, that people ACTIVELY went to support groups as seen in one of the movies (I would imagine some people would have self-deleted as well, and you'd have a reverse effect of people being brought back would have to face a world without some of their loved ones). One would think that there would have been SEVERE societal issues with such an event, never mind the hysteria and paranoia effect that having a cosmic threat essentially performing an universe-wide genocide would have not just on Earth, but on pretty much every single inhabited planet and sentient across the universe. But Marvel just shrugs it off like it has no meaning within their own "connected universe", despite framing it like it's some huge issue (but then never address it). Never mind trying to explain how you can have a Thor: Love and Thunder with a father losing his daughter and that being the motivation of the entire movie, when at least one of them would have been Snapped either way, but it's not like the Studio actually takes notice of the storytelling challenges and gaps they create with each of their own movies or shows. That's what happens when you have creatives "trying to tell their own stories", but also want to rely on someone else's stories as a "get butts in seat" strategy. The fact that they skip over massive time periods also doesn't really help either.

Gods and Monsters is DC proper though. It was the subtitle of a Justice League animated movie in 2015 and it's companion web series and comic book. Civil war turned out to be freaking epic - Not as tight as Winter Soldier but a great comic book movie. Spider man cropping up was cool of course... Tom Holland has been fantastic... Iron man in there and their inevitable battle at the end is great. but for me the punch-the-air moment was Ant man turning gigantic in the airport battle and kicking off tearing bits of planes and booting coaches around. There is a face CU of him doing a confirming laugh after turning giant... its a real "omfg can you believe we are getting away with this in cinema?!" That was one of the defining moments in the MCU for me where you could say 'omg they really are pushing it' and it worked 1000% I think after that point Marvel started saying "ok how can we add crazy ass moments into our films on par with that?" ...and if i'm honest they've been struggling since. They could have done tons with Dr Strange 2 ...i would have loved to have seen a brief scene in the paint world... even just a few shots... or have them turn into 2d images... a bit like Pixar's inside out when the characters are deconstructed... there was a chance to be really creative... but it just centred around Wanda. 7:02 do not compare Star Wars to marvel. George Lucas, who is the creator of the Star Wars universe, and so it wasn’t out of bounds for him to make the prequel’s. The prequel’s we’re nowhere near as bad as marvel. The Star Wars universe was preserved, expand and beloved by George Lucas, he built Star Wars what it is, and he made sure there were no contradictions in the rules of the Star Wars universe. That is not comparable in the slightest marble. Disney does not even carry love or respect for their IP’s… all they care about is their political messaging telling people how to think. James Spader was great as Ultron, and Ultron works as a villain because he can’t really get killed off. Marvel is too scared to keep their villains around, so they kind of squander a lot of story potential. Crossbones could have been a great continuing antagonist for Falcon and Bucky to go after, but instead we got like ten minutes of him with no real buildup. Red Skull’s re-resurrection could have been a wonderfully dark story. Ulysses Klawe was done extremely dirty, even though Andy Serkis did a great job with the character. The “proper” Mandarin from Shang Chi was…not great. Face it, the only villains they put any real time or thought into were Loki and Thanos. Loki’s agency was taken away in, well, Loki; Thanos had all of his good character stuff stripped away in Endgame.

I do still believe that for all of its flaws, Wandavision did have a lot of reasonable arguments for themes to be explored after Endgame. The aftermath of the snap, people coming back from it, people dealing with it on the other side, grief, anxiety and struggling to move on from the trauma Thanos caused everyone. It would have been a good study of heroes struggling to be heroes again and having the pressure of that mantle but also learning to be heroes again in their own way. There was a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the storytelling fell apart and stopped being meaningful or inspiring.

I'm curious as to where Andre got the information he has. I'd like to check it out myself.

Disney feels like phase 4 is a huge success. One of the ways they are coping and trying to appease shareholders is telling them they are “setting things up“ it’s a “long game“.

Phase 4 has been a disaster. Nothing of worth was created and the money wasted on the crap that has festooned D+ has cost them countless subs. I’m not sure that the lost ground can be recovered.

Thank you, Andre. I've always said this about Perlmutter being the restraint on Kevin Feige but it was only a guess and I never researched it. I remember first being surprised by Feige's woke turn when he was in front of every camera for Black Panther. It would be the entire case AND Kevin Feige. Chadwick Boseman AND Kevin Feige, Etc. He never did that before and I thought it was so strange. Since then he's gone full woke.

I've never seen a franchise fumble the bag so hard with phase 4. Wandavision bringing in Xmen quicksilver just for A Ralph Boner joke.
