In 63 and I've clenched my teeth since I was about 17 y/o. I've had 4 TMJ surgeries (both sides twice) The second surgery a graft of cartilage from my hip was transplanted to replace the meniscus' on both sides. I'm so grateful my Dr refused to use what was popular, which was Teflon. Teflon later was proven to be extremely detrimental in many ways. I wish I'd found the info you shared years ago! My teeth are now paying the price by cracking and my gums are receding. I have a night guard, 1 of many over the yrs. I hate it! I felt refief right after practicing along with you. Thank you so much! 🙏💜🙏

Summary of the video: 1. Rotate the tongue and touch the upper palate(upper jaw) with a bit of force 2. Same as above position and try to open and close the mouth 3. Practice meditation/breathing exercises to reduce stress

I'm crying, thank you very much. Thanks to anxiety I always have my jaw clenched and have constant headaches but I cannot help it, is automatic, I just don't realize when I do it and even forgot how is supposed to be the neutral posture for the jaw, I always feel pressure at the sides of my head.

Great video. I am sitting here with an ice pack on my left jaw. Sometimes level 10 pain. I don't have TMJ but I know I do clench, espec at night so that's prob what brought it on. At one point my ear canal was swollen almost shut. The exercises in this video are gentle and not aggressive at all so they do not stir up the pain once I get it settled down. I altenate different OTC medications too. Any drs I call, the appts are weeks/months away so I have no choice but to self-treat. Good luck to anyone suffering from this as it is extremely painful.

Yours was the one that finally made me cave into watching cuz it applies to a broader range. And THANK YOU. Can I just say, you are such a GREAT doctor! I love how you give exercised but then talk about the more integrative reasons that this could be happening, like stress and then offer how meditation and breathing can help. I LOVE this doctor so much because I think this sort of integrative approach, seeing the patient as a whole of two parts, one physical and emotional is SO important. One of the great failings of our western medical approach is not taking the psychoemotional component into consideration. We need more doctors like you..super grateful for your video and I hope other doctors that are beginning their careers are of the same mindset. Thanks again.

I started having pain in my lower left jaw and sensitivity to cold liquids on the lower left teeth. I thought for sure I had a dental problem. Went to the dentist, they x-rayed the area and the doctor did all the physical tests his training teaches; cold water, air blasting, picking poking prodding and tapping...all of that. Couldn't find anything wrong. He said his best diagnosis was "clenching". He said he actually has this problem and sometimes wakes up with pretty bad pain and I think he said he sleeps with a mouthpiece. He asked if I had been especially stressed out, and it made me stop and realize I DID have 3 significant reasons, beyond everyday life, adding to my stress. Also, like someone below mentioned, I have frequent very aggravating dreams. Not scary, just seriously stressful...stuck in a place I cant find my way out of and trying to find things that I cant/lost...meanwhile everyone else in the dreams dont care, I'm the only one stressing. I never had this pain before the most recent stressors, and like this doc said, it had turned in to headaches and other pain beyond the teeth and jaw. Even before finding videos (just today decided to actually search this), awareness of the clenching has helped relieve some of the pain. You dont even realize you are doing it. I cought myself clenching as I typed this. You have to think about it constantly, or there you will find yourself, teeth clenched again. Meditation doesn't work for me and I've never been able to exorcise regularly and stick to it, so awareness and jaw flexing is all I have other than OTC pain meds, which I avoid unless the pain is really bad.

Thank you for sharing with us these techniques. I'd like to ask you a question related to my condition. Well, I don't know if it's bruxism anymore - I know I had it for some time, my friends were telling me I was clenching my jaw in my sleep. But now the problem is...my body's response to stress is that it makes my jaw clench even during the day. In this stressfull periode, my jaw is always so tight. I can't release it. Even when I try to keep my mouth in its normal position the tension won't dissapear and it's already so incofortable. Even when I eat. And when I open and close my jaw the sound of my right jaw bone is clearly present. I don't think that's a good sign. I'll try these techniques, see if they help. But do you think I should get a scan?
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis 3 жыл бұрын
it's doubtful a scan would show anything if this is mostly muscle tension. That said, try the techniques. If they don't work, seek out a referral. Also consider manual therapies and even some form of counseling or therapy to discover anxieties.

Meditation and massage has helped me. I can somewhat control my clenching during the day but when i clench at night i wake up with a headache. Neck/back/ and jaw massage at a spa helped fix that problem for nearly a week before it slowly returned. So i try to mimic what my masseuse did to loosen up the jaw. Even scalp massages help. But the relaxation and tuning into my body was also helpful.

I've had a terrible bruxism problem for years on end...I actually do the step one often, but the problem is the moment I stop focusing on holding my mouth in a normal position the bruxism starts up automatically without me hardly realizing, it's like a mental glitch that I can't figure out...also having a lot of anger problems kind of exacerbates it. But this is good info, thanks.

consider mindfulness based stress reduction. There's a pretty good app that's free called headspace. There are many more though if you don't like that one. A therapist could help you with cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance commitment therapy. Also, manual therapy like chiropractic or massage can help. Good luck.

I started taking magnesium and that has helped. I was popping excedrin daily because my jaw would hurt and then spread to my ear and temple. I noticed it happening a lot at work. I think I’m just stressed by deadlines and having to be around people all day. The magnesium has limited my use of pain meds but I still get tight before bed which makes it hard to fall asleep. My chiropractor showed me how to massage the muscle. You can do it on the outside of your face but also by sticking your fingers inside your mouth. I usually just do the outside and press really hard like I’m getting out a knot. It hurts like hell but makes the pain go away. I’ve heard vitamin c helps as well with stress.

Magnesium can be great. Some people might do well with B vitamins as well. It sounds like you would do well with journaling, breathing and or other stress/tension management techniques.

I got my first adjustment today and I didn't realize my jaw was chronically clenched. It was relaxed right away and now I don't know what to do with my jaw lol.

@@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis Thank you so much! I was recently happy to find an oral surgeon who said Botox shots into masseter muscles would stop my night clenching ($1000.00/three months). I've been night clenching with night guard since 1988. Cracked all my molars AND the crowns I had after cracking them. Currently I need three new crowns for crowns I've cracked. It would be a godsend to find a way to stop this problem. 🙏

What did you get adjusted if you don't mind me asking? Was it focused on the jaw or head?

I went to a jaw surgeon who was formerly an orthodontist, and he said if the line between your front teeth, top and bottom, line up, your jaw is in the correct place.

great advice, thanks bro! I feel like my mouthguard made be clench worse because having something in between my teeth where there should be a space naturally causes my teeth to bite.

Thank you doctor. But what if you do it wile you sleep? I have a night bruxism for years. I've tried splints but it made it worse I got full inflammation of muscles around. Don't know how to solve this though during the day I don't have this issue.

What is jaw adjustment and will that or a night teeth guard help for during the day? And does an over bite have anything to do with jaw clenching because the teeth are not aligned correctly?

My jaw doesn’t hurt but I clench (mostly at night) and I have had teeth crack. I find mouth guard uncomfortable and annoying night. I’ll give these a shot

I’m going to try these out. I’m an extreme tooth grinder and am having to get a new mouth guard every few months because I grind through it 😬 definitely anxiety related

I had a dentist appointment yesterday and the dentist asked me if I clenched my teeth. I didn’t think so, but now that I am waking up in the middle of the night noticed the tightness in my jaw and I do, so it often. I have been thinking about this, and I believe I do it when I’m cold, pain, run, exercise or stressed. Now that I am aware of it, I am trying to stop. It is difficult and at this moment that I am not doing it, I do feel less pressure. I just never noticed I did that. I am trying to stop and now I am researching videos to help me with that, I am not sure why I have been doing that or when it started. If you have any helpful tips please let me know.

What would you recommend if you had the opposite issue? I clench the muscles under my chin and keep rubbing the roof of my mouth sore with my tongue. These muscles and my mouth are now constantly sore. I try to relax but find I have reclenched without realising.
