Meat is always a hot topic in the nutrition and wellness space. To eat it, or not to eat it? That is the oversimplified question of what is a much more complex topic. You see, we can’t lump all meat into one category. And we can’t think about meat as all or nothing-there’s much more to the story. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Scott Lively and I talk all about conscious meat-eating, and more specifically beef, as well as the nuances that come with it. Scott shares some helpful tips for improving the quality of the meat you eat.
Scott Lively is the co-founder of Raise American, which provides 100 percent grass-fed, organic, American, planet-friendly beef. He is an organic food entrepreneur and an absolute beef freak. Scott left a successful career in the IT industry to co-found what is now the largest organic beef company in the United States. Today, he oversees a broad portfolio of companies, private labels, and brands. Scott is an advocate of local economic development and regenerative farming practices applied to large agriculture. He is the author of For The Love of Beef: the Good, the Bad and the Future of America’s Favorite Meat.

We also need to look at how animals are slaughtered. You can raise them on grass / organic but if they are traumatised at the end, the meat will be flooded with stress hormones. Humanely slaughtering animals HAS to be the next step.

Agree but couldn’t we treat animals with compassion when they give their lives for us because it’s the right way to treat other sentient beings regardless of the benefit to us? Is everything about money/us?

Back in the 80s, there was a controlled grass fire on the prairies near the Chicago area. They discovered, once the planted vegetation was burned off, the grasses that were indigenous to the Prairies grew back. It seems the land has a memory of it’s true nature. This may be a simple way to provide the healthy natural grasses needed for natural grass fed. Plants that grow wild have a lot more nutrition than ones that have manipulated by geneticists including hybridization or GMO. ❤️🇨🇦

Before the genocide of Indigenous people in North America, the Midwest, Great Plains, and stretching down into Texas west of the 90th meridian were an ecosystem that was managed by Native Americans through controlled burning and charring. Archaeologists have studied the soil fertility and found that something like 90% of it is anthropogenic carbon that persists in the soil to this day from these charring events. It is very similar to the anthropogenic soil fertility in the Amazon basin called Terra Preta, but not as widely known.

I like how down to earth Scott is, he doesn’t pretend he is a doctor or scientist. He really believes in what he is doing and is not just trying to sell you on this idea of organic or grass fed.

My Aunt was a steer farmer for decades, the beef she raised was fed on what she and her two sons raised on the farm. It was the most delicious beef I have ever tasted. This was back starting in the late 30's to the late 70's. I have never tasted beef like that since she retired from farming and raising livestock.

I'm lucky to live in a region (central corridor in NC) where many young farmers are acquiring or inheriting family farms, regenerating their pastures and raising high quality pastured beef, grass finished (mild winters here). They're selling direct to consumers ( I buy at my Greensboro farmers market and get to know the farmers themselves personally). Many offer seasonal tours of their farm and explain their practices. Paying $9 lb for burger, $11 for porkchops, then it gets pricey for steaks ($20-30). I will never buy the crud sold in grocery stores again - pastured tastes the same if not better (this guy says pastured is an acquired taste - whaaaaa? not true). And I know I'm feeding my body healthy food, warding off cancer and chronic metabolic syndrome conditions.

Thank God for people like Valter Longo and Colin T Campbell who tell the truth when it comes to animal protein. Processed plant meats are not recommended by credible doctors and scientists they know that processed is processed.

I’ve been really interested in beef for a little over a year now. I came across Scott’s book at a Barnes noble in my home town. The manager told me it was brand new and there were only 2 copy’s left. I bought the book, ended up finishing it in 2 days and have followed Scott ever since. I really want to know more! I hope he ends up writing another book and breaks down more of the meat industry.

I am so curious to know how many people that want to eat healthy to stay healthy like myself can afford to eat everything organic ? Specially beef which lately has become outrageously expensive.

I made the transition 2 yrs ago, even though I retired on $1000 per month income. I found that when I cut out eating any prepared foods (fast food, hot bars, restaurants) I saved plenty enough to buy pastured meats at my local farmers market. Pastured beef burger and pork products are very affordable. Steaks are a special expensive treat but I don't need them every week anyway. I have my own hens for free range eggs but rarely eat chicken meat anymore because it's too high in Omega 6's. Then I alternate my beef and egg meals with canned salmon and sardines - VERY healthy Omega 3s.

I eat really great organic beef once a week. I enjoy every biteful.I am on a strict budget, but do manage to eat organic. My plate is filled with many veggies so I do get full.

(Harry here) From my experience, after having a heart attack and damage to the bottom of my heart I would say yes. I was able to heal my heart by eating this way. I did do KETO and CARNIVORE with PSMF mixed in. We are still eating this way and will for the rest of our lives.

Dr.Hymans an extremely smart guy. I’m not only intrigued by what I’ve heard so far but I will definitely be listening to more podcasts. I also agree with some of these other comments. Scott needs to release a book on this vegan meat everyone is now eating. How is that made ????

The short answer is YES. In particular, organ meats. We evolved with them as a primary source of nutrition. Most plants are toxic.

Now that we are empty nested, a single mule deer will take care of me and my wife for the year for red meat. I use pasture raised, grass fed and finished beef suet added to venison for making ground meat.

btw a steak costs about 18.00 for a decent one.....that is just 1 meal! for 18 dollars i could feed a family of 4 for an entire day using fruits and green vegetables....and much healthier too

umm, I applaud this guy for doing the work he does but he's a lightweight on the science and there are much sharper, more savvy regenerative farmers and science guys out there who Dr. Hyman could interview. There's Joel Salatin in Virginia, Mark Shepard in Wisconsin, any Permaculture teacher like Geoff Lawton in Australia....on and on lots of experts.

This was a great listen. Just did my weekly drive from the Hamptons to Manhattan. Almost swerved off the road I was so interested. Do you really think the world will become meatless ? I have a good friend who works for beyond and he believes that by 2040 we will all be eating beyond meat.
