Lucas' true story of drug addiction and recovery (Documentary). For all of you that think you (or a loved one) will never get recovery, this addiction story will bring you hope. Lucas had been homeless, hit multiple bottoms, was in countless rehabs, and lost several people he cared about, because of addiction. His family had tried everything. Most people would have just given up, but Lucas' family refused to give up.
Lucas overdosed on many occasions, he was homeless, he lost so many relationships, and his friends were dying of addiction. Can you force someone to go to rehab? Lucas' parents did on more than one occasion. Eventually, forcing him into addiction treatment was the thing that got his clean and sober (and into long term recovery). But before that, there were a LOT of relapsing and many bottoms.
If you're wondering how to help someone with an addiction who is in denial, this video is going to help you understand how people with drug and alcohol problems think and which will help you understand how to approach someone in denial.
Lucas came from a very loving family, went to a private Catholic school, and was taught to be hardworking and responsible, but none of these things protected him again developing a severe addiction problem before he was even old enough to drive.
Like many teens, he experimented with alcohol and pot, but by the time Lucas was 15 years old, he had developed a full-on crack addiction. His parents tried relentlessly to help him.
They changed his school multiple times, they sent him to treatment over and over again, they kicked him out, but nothing they did seemed to make a difference.
They were forced to watch their son spiral into addiction and couldn't do anything to stop it.
Lucas experienced every major consequence you could imagine. He lost friends, he didn't graduate high school on time, he overdosed multiple times, he lost friends to overdoses, he was homeless, and the list goes on and on. None of these consequences made a difference.
Everything Lucas would get out of a rehab center, he went directly back to drugs and alcohol.
Listen to Lucas as he explains his addiction almost destroyed his life and how he was finally able to break the cycle. This story is packed with lessons for any parent who has a child struggling with any type of addiction to drugs or alcohol.

As I am listening to this I completely see how my son has gotten so deep into the nasty cyclical pattern of addiction and homelessness. Thank you Amber and thank you Lucas. I also appreciate Lucas' parents for sticking with him, and eventually setting some boundaries for themselves also. Wow. I have learned so much and I also can see more clearly what could be going on with my son. I have a direction to take when I fly to TX to see everyone. Hoping for the best...

Thank you Lucas, what a journey, and how amazing to hear in your own words with such honesty, it just goes to show, that we must never give up on someone no matter how bad it can look, I agree with you when you said once the drugs and drink stopped you still had to work out how you felt about you. Your role models now your friends too, also showed that giving up drugs and alcohol didn't meant you would become what you feared, and that you liked you and could and would have true fun and life in more fulfilling ways than you could have imagined. I am smiling inside at the thought of you and your friends helping other people now and how you can see the cycle of addiction from so many aspects, because you went through 'it'. I hope my loved one will get to where you are, I am taking on what Amber is teaching, and I knew that she had recommended your video, just stumbled upon it and it has really touched me, God Bless you Lucas

Wow what a great ending to the video !! That was a looooooong hard journey!! Years & years. It must have been extremely hard for the parents since Lucas was their only biological child and then trying to raise these other children during this crisis process never knowing what might happen to their wayward son and the effects of it all on the individual siblings and family unit. I am glad that you discussed the siblings at the end of the video because I wondered how all of it affected them throughout the recovery process. At least Lucas, you didn't have children of your own involved. That makes it even worse for everyone. So glad and proud of your accomplishments !!! And thank you so much for sharing your story. I pray this can happen for my own daughter that's out there at age 38 (mentality of a 15 yr old ) Thank you Amber !!

My daughter is nosey. She would probably want to watch your videos to see what I'm up to.And she would probably get a kick out of them. She also would probably say this lady knows her stuff, no pulling the wool over your eyes. When she was still here she told me one day she was looking up about going to school to be an addiction counselor. I thought that was a little outrageous since she's in the middle of addiction herself. But I could see her doing it if she could ever break free of her addictions. I mean she's almost 40 years old with a 15 year old mindset most of the time and lacks a lot of basic adult skills like money management, organization skills, cooking, cleaning Etc she uses the excuse that she didn't get the Susie Homemaker genes. She also has adult attention deficit disorder and has a poor diet which I believe contributes to a lot of her Adult ADD problems too.

So far I have only seen examples of people who come from stable parents that have recovered from addiction. What about recovery of people who come from abusive families? Often this is a multigenerational problem. Are abused addicts too disadvantaged to get help? Did his friend and his friend's sister recover?
