Neil Peart is the drummer for the band Rush. So it's not just him, although obviously it is just him for his drum solo. He would do a solo every show. In the world of Rock music, Neil is considered one of the best, if not the best drummer of all time. This particular solo you watched was a couple of hours into the concert. By this point in their career, Rush was doing 3 hour shows, they had such a huge catalog of music. If you want to see more of Neil, with the entire band Rush a good instrumental to check out would be their "Where's my thing, Here it is". kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7F5lpVhsc_bY5c.html

I never got to see them live, and that will be one of my biggest regrets. They were playing in Houston and I rented a car to a fella that was going and he was so excited that I really considered seeing if I had enough in the bank, quitting my job and going to see the best three musicians in Rock history. As a collective, they absolutely were the three greatest. No other band has ever been this cohesive, in my opinion. It's almost like they were a single brain....just that in tune with each other. They didn't just play music. They created masterpieces that people will be listening to in another 100 or 200 years. There will never be another Neil Peart. He's the gold standard and forever will be!!!

@@susanglenn5498 "They created masterpieces that people will be listening to in another 100 or 200 years." That is my dream. I guess you and I will never know. I always considered Rush to be the band that "Bill and Ted" weren't. Hopefully that isn't too cryptic, but in that movie, Rufus said that Bill & Ted's music would align the planets and bring universal harmony, creating a utopian society as a result. Bill & Ted sucked as musicians, and I always thought that should have been Rush.

The Professor stands alone in my opinion. There are others that are amazing, Danny Carey, which is who i consider to be the best if the rest, i guess. Obvuously, Jon Bonham and Keith Moon were both phenomenal rock drummers and are in their own class of drummers as well. Neil always brought something different to his drumming, that sets him apart from other rock drummers. But yes, he was the GOAT imo. 😁

While I agree with your assessment as a drummer myself, I would like to show that Mike Portnoy and Bobby Rock have a lot to show to the drumming world. Also, Tommy Aldridge is still the double bass drum king. Then there is the showmanship of Steve Moore. All are amazing. I try to learn and take in as much as I can from all the drummers, but Neil Peart is my main influence along with John Bonham and Keith Moon. I never got into Tool, but I know that they are influenced by Rush, just like Kings X is. So much good music inspired by Rush.

Neil pulled a Tiger Woods move when he was already considered one of the best drummers in the world. He always played match grip and then later in his career he decided to relearn drumming with the classic grip used by Buddy Rich and the other great jazz drummers.
@KentBalzer
@KentBalzer 2 жыл бұрын
@@RedBud315 Actually, Neil has been switching between match and traditional grip all along. Watch the Fly By Night video when they get to the slow section and Neil plays the cymbals with traditional grip. Then check out Xanadu and you'll notice he does traditional grip on the slow sections. Also, on A Farewell to Kings during the first guitar solo, it was a jazz style with traditional grip. I used to think he did match grip throughout his career, but as I review the earlier videos, I can see he has bee switching it up the whole time. He did train with a jazz drummer right before the Test for Echo album and went more traditional throughout that album. Still the best drummer of all time.

All three of them (Neil, Alex and Geddy) would play with this level of intensity for the entirety of their 3 hour shows. When they decided to close out their touring days, Neil was struggling physically to maintain the quality performance that he demanded of himself. They were one of the tightest trios to ever hit the stage. They may have made the occasional mistake but it was almost impossible to tell when it happened as they just kept rockin' ! One other thing to note is that they were not only bandmates but were also the picture of what true best friends are.

There's a saying, "Neil Peart is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." I can't think of a better video than you just watched that demonstrates this better. Throughout his career, he always strove to improve his drumming, getting lessons from folks like Freddie Gruber in the 90s, though he was already a seasoned drummer himself. He just wanted to improve his improv skills. He traveled extensively, both on tour and on his own, visiting places in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, picking up unique rhythms wherever he could. Oh, and he wrote like 95% of the lyrics for the band Rush. I'd think Rush would be a great place to start if you want to see and hear more of Neil.

Circa 1994- The Drum Master Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business." World Inspiration Neil's love of bicycling and travel is well known - it's almost the stuff of legend. While on tour with Rush he's been known to avoid the tour bus and bike to the next town and venue. When not on the road with Rush, he has taken his bike to the four corners of the globe, including Europe, mainland China, and Africa. Upon entering Peart's Toronto home, one is immediately struck by the fact that this man has seen and experienced locales most people can't imagine. "Here's a prized possession of mine," he says proudly, showing a raw-metal sculpture standing about ten inches high and resembling a tribal version of Rodin's "The Thinker." "It's from Africa. It weighs about twenty pounds, and I had to carry it a hundred miles on my bike. but it was worth it." Neil's passion for authentic African art is obvious. Unique drums, with their rich, hand-carved elegance, are displayed in his home with reverence. Original Chinese gongs decorate a few of the walls. The decor hints at the fact that a drummer lives in the house, shouts at the fact that a word traveler resides there. Peart's love of travel is obvious, but does actually going to other parts of the world inspire him musically? "First of all, I think travel is very important for any person," he insists. "It's affected me enormously, and I'm sure it filters down to my work. Africa is not an abstraction to me anymore - neither is China. They're places I've experienced, places where I've met people, made friends - and just broadened my thinking. "I've written lyrics that were directly influenced by my travels abroad. In a drumming sense, I've had some interesting experiences in different countries, experiences that may not directly affect the way I play drums, but that certainly inspire my feelings about drumming. And I've gotten very interested in hand drumming. Lately I've been working on playing the djembe." One way Peart's wanderlust has directly affected the sound of his drums is through sampling. "One of the small drums I brought from China is an antique that's too fragile to play. So I took it and a few of the other delicate instruments that I own and sampled them - along with many of my other instruments like my temple blocks and glockenspiel. I've built up a huge library of sounds, and they've made their way onto our albums in many of the different patterns I play." A particular pattern Neil has recorded that demonstrates the value of "world inspiration" comes from Rush's last album, Roll The Bones. "On that record we had a song called 'Heresy' that had a drum pattern I heard when I was in Togo. I was laying on a rooftop one night and heard two drummers playing in the next valley, and the rhythm stuck in my head. When we started working on the song I realized that beat would complement it well."

He's the only drummer I have heard over the years who can combine the African drum beat he learned from a gentleman in a little village in Africa with old school drum solo and old school drum line and big band jazz style at the end. He's one of my all time fave drummers and he was one of the reasons why I picked up a pair of sticks and taught myself how to play the drums when I was 9 years old. Neil was one of those rare people who understood that there is always something he can learn from others. And even very late in his career he sought out a jazz drummer and took lessons from him for a while. He would travel the world because he loved seeing new things and places and experiencing music all over. He tells a story of being in Africa, couldn't speak a word of the language, but a tribal member was drumming and he motioned a question asking if he could join, and the two of them back and forthed on tribal drums for a while. Sharing their talent and love of music without a word being spoken. Neil was a truly good human being. Suffered some pretty harsh tragedy and loss, but in the end it made him stronger and even better.

Nicest, gentleness and deep philosophical person ever to be on the planet; he will be forever missed! Try to listen to some of Rush's albums; Moving Pictures, Power Windows, Presto, Grace Under Pressure are great drum records. Also, Neil wrote most-all, if not all of Rush's lyrics. A lot of great philosophy and life-experience came from him. Thanks for having an open mind and drum-knowledge to appreciate Neil...

He's your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. At one point (he could already play like this) he felt he could improve so he actually took drumming lessons and got better. He also wrote most of the lyrics for Rush as well as a number of books. He was a very private individual and generally let Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson handle the fan interaction as he wasn't comfortable doing that. A lot of people consider him the greatest drummer of all time and even those who pick somebody else have him in the top three. These solos were part of live concerts by Rush whom he was the drummer for. So he'd have already been playing for over an hour and some of those songs are difficult even by his standards. 'Tom Sawyer' is a good example.

Many others can play different drum styles with skill. Part of what made him so special is his entire career he constantly sought out new teachers and learned new techniques to play new styles. Then he took all of it and combined it and added in other percussion instruments. And on top of that not only could he switch time signatures smoothly he could play different time signatures at the same time with different limbs. The combination of raw talent and constant drive for betterment put him in rare company. The fact that he was able to control all four limbs independently to produce different sounds with each is also a rare ability. I'm not certain there is a drummer alive with the physical abilities and combined knowledge and skill sets needed to play some of his later stuff where he was just showing off for the crowds. Rush was one of the most delightfully ironic combinations possible. An introvert drummer who writes all the lyrics but never sings. A lead guitar player who sings backup vocals. And then you have a bass guitar player singing lead vocals and playing keyboards and sometimes he does all three at the same time by playing a synth with his feet. Any of them as individual musicians were amazing. As a combined force they were magical.

I'm Canadian born in the 60s so you know I love Rock! Rush has always been a part of who I am, they are the best Canadian rock band and Neil Peart s death was a tragic loss to music, one phrase I've always heard when his name is mentioned is "Neil Peart is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer!" RIP Professor, we miss you greatly! My favorite Rush songs are Limelight, Tom Sawyer and Closer to the Heart! But that's just doing a quick off the top of my head thing! It's a very long list! Peace! Luv Judy from (near )Toronto Canada😁❤️

That instrument he is playing is technically called a percussion controller. It’s a synthesizer for drummers that you play like a xylophone. Since it’s a synth controller you can make it sound like anything you want. In this solo he has a marimba or xylophone patch loaded (those instruments have wooden keys), and I believe he triggers the gong sound at the end on it. His drum kit has a number of electronic “pads” that have programmable sounds. Some of them look like drums, some are the black cymbals, and he has foot triggers, too. Kinda like Guitar Hero drum pads, but professional-grade. He is actually triggering the horn sounds at the end with various pads and pedals. The only pre-recorded loop was the jazz song at the very end. In the early days Neil used a real glockenspiel, but the versatility of the programmable pads teplaved it with this thing in the early 80’s.

It's ALL him drumming!!! And with NO electrics or auto-beat of any kind! If you liked his solo, you should listen to other RUSH songs he wrote and played on. One in particular is called 'The Trees'. I think it's even better the his solos!!! 😊

Neil Peart is the percussionist (he was much more than just a drummer) for the 3 member rock band Rush, if you want to see more a good intro song would be Spirit of Radio. Neil also was the primary lyricist for the group, and some songs that showcase this would be Limelight, Subdivisions, Closer to the Heart, Freewill and Between the Wheels.

And his hi-hats never deviate. People used to ask me who the best drummer, or guitarist was (I’ve been a musician for 40 years). I’ve always replied with it’s not a competition. His wife passed from cancer. If his daughter was with him, after the show, they’d (depending on distance) either cycle or motorcycle to the next venue. Most musicians party. She was killed in a single car crash, That drove him to retreat to a cabin in Quebec and drinking 18yr old Scotch. Neil and Geddy helped him through that dark time. Neil then took his BMW bike on an 80000 km tour on the trans-Canada hwy!!! Imagine getting gas and there’s Neil doing his own oil changes on the side of the road!!! He’s written books and was extremely intelligent on many subjects subjects. I’m not much on religion but Neil with a handful of others, well God played through them. He’s my first “best”. Smoke, put headphones on and listen to 2112.

Funny that you mentioned Regular Show, JG Quintel is a huge Rush fan and there's a couple of interviews of him around where you can see a Rush poster or two in his office. And there's a few references in the show itself that I know of, with some of the montage songs sounding strikingly similar to Rush songs, as well as Benson's solo like you mentioned haha.

Remember - this solo (like he did for *every* concert since the early 2000s) took place in the middle of a 3-hour concert! Neal *composed* his solos - with sections allowing for improvisation, but designed to demonstrate a wide range of styles and techniques. He used match grip, straight grip, and English grip, demonstrated advanced snare work from both marching band and swing/jazz perspectives, crossovers, melodic percussion (with the electric marimba), advanced ostinatos, polyrhythms, and advanced use of MIDI triggers in the last "orchestral" section. In short - every concert of every tour since "Vapor Trails", Neal performed a solo that was literally a demo of every advanced drum technique known to mankind - and made it sound like heaven!
