Thank you to our patron John P for this fun pick! A very interesting mix of pop and prog and rock. It almost reminded me of Asia or 90125 at points. It was released in 1990 and you can hear it, but I love it. I grew up on that... "sound" and I just love it. Very interesting pick. Thank you John!

My band opened for Toy Matinee. They were one of the best live acts ever. Afterwards we partied with Kevin and Cheryl who was unknown at the time. You could tell none of the band members liked her. She wound up stealing Kevin’s music and claimed it was her own. Just like she did with John O’Brien and Leaving Las Vegas on David Letterman. Both wound up dead. The label invested heavily in keeping her name out of these stories. I have no doubt if Cheryl wasn’t involved they both would be alive today. She makes the devil look like a choir boy. Someday someone will make a movie out of it. So sad. 😊 Kevin introduced me to my hero Keith Emerson. They were good friends. Keith did a wonderful tribute song to Kevin after his death. As others have mentioned, Jenny Ledge is a great track and will remind you of Steely Dan. Tim Pierce who has an amazing KZfaq channel played guitar here but was replaced by the stellar Mark Bonilla for the live shows. Mark was the guitarist for the Keith Emerson band.

Thanks for the pick, John. This album is a bit of a time capsule, capturing a group of musicians valiantly attempting to drag prog into the 90's, but with a commercial slant that was far better than most of the slick, corporate prog of the late 80's. Kevin Gilbert was a San Jose boy who had been with a band called Giraffe that won a Sony contest, but nothing came of it. But he was clearly a super talented dude, and he drew the attention of producer Pat Leonard (Madonna) who offered to collaborate on an album, which resulted in this one-off (BTW, after this Leonard teamed up with former Mr. Mister singer Richard Page for an album called '3rd Matinee', which was an attempt to continue producing music in this vein, but with far less satisfying results.) The entire Toy Matinee album is worth a listen. This song was a minor hit, but didn't have much reach beyond the west coast. Yet again, nothing came of all the hard work and KG and Pat Leonard parted ways. Kevin then recorded a fine follow up solo album called 'Thud', and was working on another called 'The Shaming of the True' when he tragically passed this mortal coil. But he left such a strong mark in his brief time with us that people remember him and his music fondly to this day. RIP

What an awesome band. When I first heard this I thought it was Ambrosia. Kevin was one of the greatest ever. RIP Kevin! I was going to request this! There is much more where this came from. A fave is Kevin Gilbert & Thud Live at the Troubadour, Nick D'Virgilio on drums, and the posthumously released The Shaming of the True, completed by NDV and Kevin's friends.

A fellow reaction video lover turned put me onto this album and I agree, the whole album is good! Another great less known band, although they had more than one album was Crack the Sky! There is a whole story, a mishap in getting their first album delivered and they really only reached notoriety on the east coast, specifically Baltimore...but a great band to be sure!! From Wiki: In 1975, the band released their first album, the critically acclaimed eponymous Crack the Sky, which reached 161 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Although praised by The New York Times and declared the "debut album of the year" by Rolling Stone, promotion and distribution problems with Lifesong Records prevented its widespread success.[1] According to Terry Minogue, "Records were promised but never arrived at the distribution centers. The record would be on the radio but there would be no product on the store shelves or visa versa [sic]. When people wanted it, it would never be available."[1] By what some[who?] termed blind luck, the marketing did work in Baltimore, only because a surplus of records was shipped there and put on display in stores when the album was receiving radio play. Subsequently, the album became very popular in Baltimore. Laidback Larry Allen, music director at WYDD in Pittsburgh, professed love for the album and played Crack the Sky in heavy rotation, but no other place did.[citation needed] In 2015, their debut album was ranked number 47 in the Rolling Stone list of "50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time".[2] Maybe I will request one, at a later date! Any other takers for Crack the Sky?

The entire Toy Matinee album is great. Kevin Gilbert had great solo albums also - Thud and the posthumously released concept album The Shaming of the True are among my favorites. He was Sheryl Crows boyfriend back before she became famous as well.

You should check out the video Tim Pierce made on this album - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9uAa5yQp5nVaXk.html. He interviewed the other players (Patrick Leonard, Guy Pratt, Bryan MacLeod) plus producer Bill Bottrell. It's a fascinating look at the whole project.
