Nice. Kevin Gilbert is probably the greatest rock artist that hardly anyone has ever heard of. His catalog of music with Giraffe, Toy Matinee, Thud and solo is spectacular.

Toy Matinee is a reference record. The musicianship, composition and production is in a league of it's own. Thank you for this.

Guy Pratt is a comic genius in the parallel dimension, his sense of humor is as sharp as his bass play .

@@geoffreylogsdon162 that’s a bit harsh, he was getting married and had a Pink Floyd tour to do. Hence he doesn’t play on one track on the album.

Great clip. You are indeed one of my fav bass players. 🙏 I met Kevin Gilbert in Japan back in -89 and also met him here in Sweden once. We did keep in touch for some years. Fantastic musician and singer. Sad he is gone. 😢

Thanks Guy...best song EVER. An album that should be in every collection. Great songwriting, playing, and singing. The genius of Pat Leonard and Kevin Gilbert. No wonder you all had such a great time. Sounds amazing on both CD and vinyl.

This is insanely cool. KG music is sacred ground in our family... our music collection... and it's a pleasure to hear these insights! We play (or attempt to!) KG music in many projects over the years.

I was obsessed with this album and couldn’t understand why it didn’t get the acclaim it deserved. Not to knock another group but this band along with the songs was far better than Mr.Mister and had far less commercial success. This bass playing is phenomenal and is a microcosm of what made the record great. Bravo!

This makes me very happy. I’m 37 years old and this has been my favorite album since I was 10 years old when my mom brought it home after hearing them on the radio. I was looking through the comments for this comment specifically and it was nice to hear it. What’s really funny is I’ve had this album in my CD player in my car for years at a time through multiple multi year relationships with girls and each time none of them ever asked me to change the album once.

I just posted Last Plane Out as day 5 of 10 of albums that we most influential to me. Kevin Gilbert was an amazing songwriter that left us way too early! The music on this album ranks up there with the Beatles. As a drummer, Brian's work on this was incredibly inspirational to me and is one of my favorite songs to play. Thanks for sharing this Guy!

I remember when Kevin brought me the demo tapes of this stuff I was totally blown away. We played together at Serra High School. I went on to play with Roger Steen from The Tubes and later with Miles Schon, Neil‘s son. Check out Roger Steen’s 2012 release. Kevin I love you brother.

One of the all time greatest CD ever. I'd almost say Beatles caliber but my loyalty to the Beatles prevents me from saying that. I'd love to hear Things She Said, Queen of Misery and Jenny Ledge. I'd also love to hear more stories about the making of this CD. Thanks for sharing.

It was on local rock radio whne it came out. I am POSITIVE there was some sort of payola going on becuase somethign this good from Madonna's Magic Man (Pat Leonard, look on here for Tim Pierce Toy Matinee for amgreat doc of the players on the album, he has a 2nd video you have to dig for) to jave a somg on ROCK radio. When Jenny Ledge got played I LEFT WORK to go buy the CD. Whole thing is amazing. Tim Pierce played on all your favorite late 80s 90s songs.

Fabulous. I love the shake/slide of notes you do. Especially in LPO. So cool and it pops right out for a second and your ear goes "WTF was that?? Was that mee ears?" Fantastic Mr. Pratt! What a bass line! I had know idea you played on that. I was living in LA at the time and discovered Kevin Gilbert on Mark and Brian. Loved that Toy Matinee album. Great playing, writing, production! I played the hell put of it. Should have had more recognition. Kevin was quite a talent and is sorely missed.

Guy, I am a drummer and I can honestly say you are the greatest bass player I've ever heard... Your taste is a once in a lifetime gift given to you at birth... If I have one dream is to play the Toy Matinee album with the incredible group of super musician... I have to say that you are my biggest inspiration even thogh we do not play the same instrument... In my opinion, the death of Kevin is the saddest in music history... I think that playing with you will be the happiest day I can ever dream of...
@patton303 Жыл бұрын
For me, as brilliant as Kevin Gilbert was (RIP), it's Guy Pratt that makes this song for me. Actually this whole album. I'm a drummer but I love bass players who lock it down with the drummer so the melody can float above it. It's the thing that makes your head move and it's a lost art anymore. We need less fretboard acrobatics and more Guy Pratt's and Mark King's in the world.

I became an instant fan of Toy Matinee when I lived in LA after hearing you for the first time on Mark & Brian. Shortly after that, I couldn't count how many people came into the record store I was working at to ask if we've gotten your album in stock, and then finally the full album finally got released, and I just had to get a copy of it for myself. Let's just say I became an even bigger fan after hearing the album in its entirety and that fanfare never died out, even after all these years. I kept thinking to myself how your bass skills and Brian's drumming really stood out as something quite powerful---such a "concept you can dance to" if you will. I still play my Toy Matinee CD constantly.
