If you look up "cool", you find a picture of Rickie Lee.

Notice at the end, how she makes her voice sound like a car passing by? She's brilliant. Saw her live, just about 4 years ago, she's still performing and writing new material, even in her 70's.

Thanks for pointing that out. I owned the album and saw her but it’s been too long and hearing it now, the end? Ridiculous genius.

She used a car breaking down as a broken romance metaphor and the gas stations she mentioned was Mobil, Shell and Standard then using Texaco, a old commercial jingle, “you can trust your car to the man who wears the star.” As she mentioned the star.

My absolute favorite off this album. Using metaphors of a truck stop to describe a desire for connection. Effing genius. Her vocal is surreal.

So much feeling in that song ,still makes me cry 40 years later....'Company' off that same album is the saddest loneliest song ever !

Rickie Lee; still going strong and breaking my heart. Night Train kills me as I lost my little girl to the big D, as does Company from this album. Here’s praying you and your beautiful daughter have a happier ending, but keep listening to Rickie🎉

Company breaks me in two every time, plus After Hours to close the album. The way she sings "All the world still loves a dreamer."

Rickie had a hard breakup with Tom Waits around this time. I could be wrong, but I think RLJ never totally got over it. I always wondered if songs like this one reflect her breakup. This album made a splash. Her 1979 debut Rickie Lee Jones album (Warner Bros) won the Grammy for “Best New Artist.” She was a hit on Saturday Night Live, which was the first time I heard of her. I bought the album after seeing her on SNL and then I saw her in concert (Memphis, TN 1979). It is still the best concert I ever saw. Rickie battled a drug problem after this album. Her music reflected these problems and she didn't have the success that people thought she would have based on this first album masterpiece. THAT SAID, Rickie put out several good albums after the debut. I own most of them. I adore her.

Oh my, what a great song that no reactors ever do! One of my favorites off her self-titled album. In fact the entire album is a masterpiece. Highly talented singer songwriter that is always highly underrated. Texaco, Standard and Mobile were all gas stations. Her play on words is simply magnificent. Yes Lee, her voice!❤ I wanted to edit to give you some perspective, back in the day when you were road tripping there were billboards that would say "Last Chance ( for gas) Texaco" x amount of miles ahead. Also there were signs on taxi cabs with a Camel smoking a cigarette. I've watched this 3 times and wish I could like more than once! You have found a gold mine in Ricki Lee Jones! I'm so glad that you enjoy her as all her music makes you feel something . "Night Train" or "Young Blood" or "Easy Money"next please.

Love how she makes her voice sound like a passing highway car near the end and all of her automotive references throughout. Thought she was going to be the next Joni, but she could never match this debut album. Every song is a gem on this album.

Perfection right there! Yes, the first album is fantastic. My favorite albums are Pirates, Flying Cowboys, Traffic from Paradise, and Pop Pop. She also does great covers. She assembled some amazing musicians in the studio and live. Saw her several times in the 80s & 90s in Philly. Still performing!

Ya felt that one, didn't ya? She's the car, she needs a man to fix her, it's the last stop for her, the last chance Texaco, before she goes solo down that long stretch of highway. I admire you for being present with your emotion, especially on video. Not many do that. Thank you, man.

When she made the sound of a car going by at the end - the question would be if the car picked up the woman, or passed her by ? (In that way it reminds me of Hendrix's "Castles Made Of Sand" ). The way she uses the metaphor of a car in bad shape to symbolize the character's failures in relationships is really inventive.

Perhaps Ricky Lee Jones’s best song it will grow on you over the years. The metaphors are interesting fun and typical of her intellect. Note her boyfriend at the time was none other than Tom Waits. Please listen to. We belong together from the Pirates album.

This is my favourite RLJ song, and one I'd happily take to my desert island. There are a number of terrific live versions on KZfaq, of which this is the one I come back to. It's just her and her guitar, and she's both scarily intense and (probably) high as a kite - and this performance is mesmerising. Hope you enjoy it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a6iegLhor53Icas.htmlsi=G1_BYjN8oQHmrRHe
