Thank you to our patron and supporter Snoops for this wonderful pick! I had so much fun listening to this and I think I might have felt a tad smitten by this lady. There is just something about she sings that tickles my fancies. Dr. John just killing it... Whoever else was on it did great too. The personnel list was huge for this one.

Around this time she was Tom Waits' girlfriend, and they would tour together. Her career also got a boost when Lowell George of Little Feat used one of her songs on his solo album. Her slow numbers, like "Last Chance Texaco", are a whole other side of her.

@@L33ReactsMost of us here have been in love with RLJ for decades! While I have always ADORED Joni's music, RLJ will forever be my female singer-songwriter-musician hero! Brilliant story teller. Yes, the first album is wonderful, but she only got better in her subsequent work! My favorite albums are Pirates, Flying Cowboys, and Traffic from Paradise. And I have to admit there's much I never got to listen to after TFP. She also does great covers. As with most singer-songwriters it's best to start from the beginning and work your way forward. She assembled the best groups of musicians in the studio and live. Saw her live several times in the 80s & 90s in Philly. I feel she never got the recognition she deserved. So glad she is still doin' her thing!

Rickie is still going strong. Loved her from day one. My deaf old guy’s breakfast club was eating monster fry-ups this morning and the girls in our breakfast bar ( Green Grocers, Norwich, UK) were playing her Pirates album (the one after this) and we got to singing along like it was the seventies again.

Just saw Rickie Lee Jones about 4 years ago, she's still writing new material, and performing in her 70's. She put on a fantastic show!! Speaking of Dr. John, she did a vocal duet with him, "Making Whoopee" that's excellent. Other gems from RLJ: Chuck E's in Love Last Chance Texaco Horses Dat Dere Up From the Skies ( Hendrix cover)

Rickie Lee Jones is a FORCE. I had the same reaction when this first dropped, then was stunned that nothing else she did was remotely like it, or like anything else she did, for that matter. She has never been in the limelight like most of the folks heard here, but that doesn't mean she's not every bit as good, or better.

I fell in love with Rickie Lee as soon as I first heard Danny's All Star Joint on the radio, back in '79.😍 About a week later, they started playing Chuck E.'s in Love, and got me going again. I bought a copy of the album and pretty much wallowed in it for several months.😄 She's really got a nice groove going in all of her stuff.😉

This is her debut album, and one of the very best - one of my all time faves, yep, and all-star back up band... you forgot Randy Newman. She became known as The Duchess of Coolsville. Really gotta hear WEASLE AND THE WHITE BOYS COOL, CHUCK E.'s IN LOVE, YOUNG BLOOD, LAST CHANCE TEXACO, NIGHT TRAIN, COOLSVILLE ... This came out way back when it was fashionable to live on the streets (or at least roam the streets at night), with the street jive, hustlin' for quarters, and before AIDS and all that.

Good one, Snoopy! I first heard this as a group performed it at my college, way before I ever heard it on the radio. I had to know where it came from and went out and bought the album as soon as I found out. My brother in law hung out with her at a party at her home in New Orleans several years ago. I’m not sure how much of the rest of her music has this same vibe, but she is good.

Ricki Lee was bringing Jazz, Hip, and fun hip to the next level. Great tune. Thanks for playing some Rickie Lee Jones. "Last Chance Texico" is on this album too. Another great song, along with "Chuck E's In Love". Give them a listen - you won't be disappointed. The king of this kind of music if Tom Waits (her ex-boyfriend) songs like "Tom Traubert’s Blues" "Step Right Up", "Burma Shave". "Small Change", "Pasties and a G-String". Tom Waits will change your entire view on what music is and was.

Geez, people are talking about all kinds of things that I heard growing up but they don't hold a candle to some others; "Last Chance Texaco", live or studio, "Living it Up", live or studio, "Night Train", "Must Be Love", "We Belong Together", "Living it Up", "Gravity", "Magazine", "Must Be Love", and those are just the first three albums. You listen to these and it will alter you inherently, altogether and forever.
