I sailed this sea from Holyhead to Dublin's Dún Laoghaire terminal, back in 1997! I will NEVER forget that hydroboat trip, EVER!!! That was the SCARIEST trip I have EVER taken in my LIFE!!!

It honestly was not fun. A 4hr crossing took 6hrs.

@@doyle171 I totally agree....zero fun. The Irish and Celtic sea {st George's Channel} are meant to be some of the nastiest sailing conditions worldwide...{according to professional Mariners}...snap gales and very heavy seas...Maybe as the winds howl along the gap made by the Sea between UK and IE.. The odour of Chunder is grim, too....as is nausea ..ugh.

Those flat bottomed tubs smack the sea like a bathtub.....the grizzling baby sounds like he/she is feeling ill...one of the most dismal sounds..a grizzling child when there is no escape from the discomfort for the child, or others.

If one has to take a vehicle......to bring back a large item, ferry is only option....we had to travel across Celtic Sea twice in one day....after collecting a large rocking horse...mercifully it was ''moderate to rough'' so nothing like this....but have done horrendous crossing in youth on a tiny ferry called ''Falaise''.....sister ship to the tragic Princess Victoria which sank in Irish Sea with the loss of all women and children and Captain and Telegraph operator and many men in the 1950's.

I did a couple of appalling crossings in the early 1990`s on "The M V Leinster", This thing was going up and down in the dock in Holyhead, When we got out to sea all hell broke loose, I vomited till I passed out, Never again would I step foot on a Ferry!
@Oakleaf7005 жыл бұрын
Ugh, mcbrando, That must have been horrendous. Poor you! I sympathise. The Falaise was a tiny ferry, I was a kid, and it was very very rough....the decks were closed, and it just seemed to go on for ever...... I asked dad ''how many more hours?'' he looked at his watch [I remember it vividly, the striped nylon strap and the thin hands that surely had stopped... he said ''We have been at sea 1 and a half hours, so another two and a half to go....it took longer than that [Dieppe> Newhaven] Your story of puking til you passed out... The QM on the Falaise spoke on a forum about a young Spanish lorry driver with a cargo of oranges from Seville.. He [Driver] began to vomit shortly after leaving Dieppe [When the boat is bouncing in the Harbour, you know you are going to be in for a long crossing..] and got worse...the ship was ''on her beam ends'' at times, and he tragically died. That would have been 1960's... poor poor man, Nowadays they would have winched him off...he surely must have died of shock or a rupture...normally people don't actually die of seasickness.. For the Irish trip, I made sure to have Transderm Scop [a patch] ...it worked, but for several days I felt like I was still rolling about. Stena Europe.. The Princess Victoria Disaster is little known today...but a very very tragic tale..some of the poor souls on board the sinking ship were too weak to move from their couches...and went down with the ship...unreal.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories and anecdotes, Very interesting reading. We have enormous Ferries that cross the Irish sea these days state of the art, but no matter the size of the ferry the Irish sea it still gets mountainous. I think I will stick with flying my friend!

The Irish /Celtic Seas do have a very bad reputation..The modern ferries [from videos] look quite stable compared to the smaller old fashioned ones....I looked up MV Leinster, and there is a video of a choppy crossing......A chap on the bridge is seen making a phone call at about 6 mins in, and says with a devilish grin ''There may be some ROLLING while we are waiting'' [to enter harbour in rough weather] ...just what passengers wanted to hear.
