In a 1980 NFL week 4 game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, the Bucs were trailing by 7 points with 12 seconds left, the ball at Cleveland's 35-yard line, and no timeouts. Inexplicably, head coach John McKay called a pass over the middle, which went about as well as you'd expect. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

The sad thing is that John McKay was the best coach the Bucs had during the Creamsicle era (1976-1996) and the only one to have a winning season, make the playoffs, win the division and win a playoff game.

“That’s like me saying I’m going to hit a home run at Yankee Stadium, when the week before, I couldn’t even have the power to hit a ball out of my suburban back yard.” (15:30) Splitting hairs here, I know, but I’ve seen my share of homers over the short right field fence in Yankee Stadium that would have been held in by plenty of back yards.

lol true. hell, for a week or so when charlie finley first owned the (then) kansas city a's, after being denied bringing in the fence to match yankee stadium, he had a part spray painted to say something to the effect of "this would be a home run in yankee stadium", though he dropped it when it turned out the visiting team was hitting way more balls like that than the a's.

I have to admit that I kinda dig it when our beloved host does a segment that gets him all indignant and angry. His anger can get intense at times, but never ridiculously over-the-top. He even manages to avoid using the harder expletives in favor of the more minor kinda-naughty words. Even when P.O.'d, JayJeeNine is always a consummate professional, and a distinguished gentleman. The best example of this IMHO is his segment about "The WORST MOMENT of Mike Holmgren's CAREER: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asphipeKmdq2iWw.html

The Browns were different back then, and this was before John Elway kept the 1980s Browns out of the Super Bowl (the Browns of that era were Super Bowl-worthy too, and not just in that "AFC is weak" kind of way either). Sure, there was that "Red Right 88" deal later that season; Brian Sipe made a bad decision there, but I'm not sure they win that game anyway, since a field goal by Don Cockcroft seemed out of the question in that spot. The 1980 Buccaneers were a bit of a letdown after that 1979 run, but they were for real as playoff contenders in general. For this season, it seemed they had to get used to not being surprising.

This was also in the era where spiking the ball wasn't an option. But this ranks up there with Dak Prescott taking off and running down the middle of the field instead of throwing it away in this year's playoffs.

That Browns team lived on the edge, and they were very consistent with it throughout 1979-'80. That Hail Mary by the Vikings clinched a playoff berth (Lions had their chances, Bucs letdown, Bears slumped, Packers began their pattern of finishing 8-8; Vikings say "Thanks!").

Football IQ is hard to measure but you see so many games lost by poor decision making. You also see this in college basketball. You used to see games won by teams, but now you see a lot more teams give games away in the tournament. It's hard to measure how people will perform under pressure and I don't think they've really come up with a test for it that's accurate, but having a good football IQ can current average player into a very good one or make a great player mediocre.

At that point in their history, the Bucs were not experienced with winning, at least not with their offense. Their defense was stout, but they were not as effective on riding Doug William’s arm to victory. Losing was easy and did not require a deep study on clock management. Winning, however, and consistent winning especially, required excellent clock management and seamless comms between coach and QB. They just did not have it and truthfully would not have it til at least 20 years later, and arguably not til TB12 rolled into town.

On the game's final play, Browns linebackers Dick "Bam Bam" Ambrose (#52) and Bill Cowher (#53) knock down Jimmie Giles (at 7:41). Cowher then holds Giles down until there are four seconds remaining. What the heck was Giles thinking as he finally got up and casually jogged to the line of scrimmage as time was running out? (I wanted to type that in ALL CAPS, but I'd be encroaching on JG9's turf. There is a 4th option-the old "Stanford Lateral" play where you try and lateral the ball in the hopes that someone can get free and run the ball in. In this instance that doesn't even guarantee a tie-the kicker needs to make the XP. New Orleans had this happen in 2003-and after executing the miracle lateral play, what happened? John Carney missed the XP and the Saints lose.

I actually blame the receiver as much as anyone. Having that route in the playcall isn’t the worst idea, since it does at least draw defenders away from the end zone. The quarterback might have been just trying to get the ball away and try again on the next play, although he definitely should’ve thrown it at his feet if that were the plan. The receiver definitely should’ve just swatted the ball to the ground.

No the Patriots vs Raiders is way worse. Like not even close, they practically gave the game up for nothing.

Why would you catch the ball? Just bat it down to the ground for one more try

I vaguely remember a game (details may be wrong) with the Redskins at Cowboys about 15 years ago, maybe 10. Cowboys we’re up 12 or 13 nothing in the fourth with a few minutes left. In those few the skins pulled off two tds for the win. Any chance you can do a vid on that game?

That’s 2005. But no dumb decision there unless you want to consider putting Roy Williams anywhere near Santana Moss on a deep ball. Die hard Redskins fan who turned 40 3 days later - as if it was an extra birthday gift…

To be fair, with the Yankees' short right field wall, you could hit one out.
