The fun mindtwist in at least this first film, is thinking about how Jamis is the one who teaches Paul so much about the desert and Fremen in his visions, even though Paul kills him shortly after meeting him. All those lessons are from conversations they will never have, but he had them all the same.

Funnily enough, the reason you feel like you've "seen this before" is because the original book was SO influential on the sci-fi genre back in the 1960s, and as a result everything from Star Wars to Mad Max to Tremors has elements that were inspired by Dune. So it's sort of like when people watch modern rom-coms, and then they watch "Pride and Prejudice" and think the story seems familiar. :)

Sir Terry Pratchett said, regarding fantasy: _“J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.”_ I think pretty much the same can be said about science-fiction and Dune (and, before it, Asimov's Foundation trilogy).

I have no thoughts on Timothy as an actor: he's fine, and I think he's perfectly fine in this role. That being said, I do think the character he's playing here is one that...really only becomes interesting *because* of how this character is explored later. He's not really one where you're immediately into *him*, and everyone else around him is generally far more likable or interesting. But the way the story explores the ideas with his character - and the idea of being a chosen one - are where things really get fascinating. And that stuff isn't in this movie, or at least it isn't if you're aren't aware of/already looking for those things. So, I think not being really engaged with him at this point actually makes a lot of sense.

Dune the novel was almost as influential on modern science fiction and fantasy as the Rings. This adaptation is brilliant, but only as a part of the next film. Dune is so complex no two hour movie could do it justice. The novel is a study in corporate power, colonization, religion, indigenous people, false saviors, corruption, and the failing of heroes. Simplified: spice is oil, Fremen are Arabs, the Houses are corporations, the Empire is the first world, and Paul is White Jesus or a White Devil depending on how long he rules. Of course Dune is much more complex. I hope you see Dune 2 and see if it redeems your experience.

Surprised you didn’t care for Rebecca Ferguson who played Lady Jessica. She was also Rose The Hat in Doctor Sleep which I believe you enjoyed. Timothy Chalamet is not my cup of tea either. I think he good considering but I would have enjoyed a different actor in the role. The Dune books are extremely difficult to translate for the screen which is why it’s taken multiple attempts to create a good version of the story for film. David Lynch tried really hard but was strong hold by money men who wanted to see it shortened and have their own version of the storyline added to the movie making it close to impossible to watch. The miniseries version didn’t capture the same depth a full length movie has the ability to plus the acting was sub-par.

Jimmy, what I will say - is seeing the movie in Imax with Dolby and all that jazz isn't just sprinkles, it is an experience. One that is only available for a limited time. I'd REALLY recommend seeing part two in an IMAX theater and posting a reaction/review and sharing your thoughts. You just won't be able to experience the film again that way. I saw the first film in IMAX and then watched it at home on our 70 inch tv on HBOmax and it just wasn't the same. In the IMAX theater the room shook, the air vibrated to the sand worm.

With this film I'd say something I don't normally think is acceptable. This movie is for people who know the books. Normally you expect an adaption to communicate to a new audience. This isn't that film. If you know the books this film is unbelievable -achieved something people thought we'd never see, that was impossible. Is it a masterpiece? Yes, absolutely. Not if you haven't read the books though. For new audiences it's dramatically flawed and static. If you've read the books then you know what's going on and what they're doing -it's anything but static. Should a movie adaption communicate to a new audience? Normally I'd say yes -but I don't think it's some immutable law. The novel Dune is a classic, the greatest classic of the entire sci-fi genre -it is extremely well known and has a large established audience. I think it is perfectly fair to say that it is the audience's fault if they haven't read the book (although by the same token it is still the movie's fault that it can't fully communicate to a new audience -both are true). Anyway, it is a huge info dump -I'm sure you'll enjoy it more when you see it again.

I don't normally leave comments, but I wanted to show my appreciation for your thoughtful commentary. I always enjoy when some can separate objective criticism and subjective views. While I am a fan of this movie and the book it is based off of, I am also well aware of many aspects of this story that will turn off some people. I almost agree with you about the two main actors. While I wouldn't say I hate them, they are perhaps one of my least favorite parts of this version. I much prefer the actors that played those roles in the Dune mini-series from 2000. I definitely would be curious to see what you would think of the mini-series, as some pieces of plot are better explained in it compared to this movie. Since the mini-series also covers the parts of the story that will be in the next movie, you probably want to see that before the series if you want to see both.

So excited to get this reaction on the eve of Part 2. Atreides vs. Harkonnens. They are the Starks and the Lannisters of the Dune Universe. When Paul screamed at his mother in the tent, I felt my heart stopped for a moment out of pure shock. Great acting by Timothee Chalamet. I think more people would appreciate Part 1 if they see it and Part 2 back to back. Like I told a friend of mine, Part 1 is the calm and Part 2 is the storm.

I just watched your reaction to Kingdom Of Heaven and decided to give other things a shot. I see you did part 2 as well so imma' check that out next. My cousin put me on to Timothy C. in "The King" so I was glad to see him get the role of Paul. The leads in the 84' original and the Mini-series made Paul seem boring and certainly not a guy who'd be able to rule a planet much less realistically, earn his place with the Fremen. Timothy nails him as smart and quietly confident, as he should be with a solid father figure, a highly trained political operative Mom and 3 living legends as Uncles.

I can't really knock your criticisms of the movie to be honest, though I disagree with some of them. While I really enjoyed Rebecca Ferguson in the Mission Impossible movies I didn't enjoy her whispery, shivery performance as Jessica at all. I didn't expect much of Timothy Chalamet, but I was pleasantly surprised by his performance. I am a huge fan of the original books, and so was really hoping for a good adaptation, and despite being quite humourless as you point out, I really did enjoy what Villeneuve gave us. It is quite a dense text to adapt. The visuals and sound design are amazing, and the action when it happens is great. It just remains to be seen how well he sticks the landing in part2. It is interesting how you felt the movie wasn't anything that new, considering the book is the inspiration for so much modern sci-fi (Star Wars being an obvious one). But I'm glad you gave us your actual impression of the movie, rather than some fake excited reaction because the film has so much hype with the sequel coming.

I agree with the assessment. i watched this for the 1st time this week AND watched the original film directly after which adapted the entire 1st book, unlike this, which is half. I enjoyed the original film more because I got more technical filmmaking aside which yes it's A+ in all those areas. just the story for this didn't need to be 2hr 46m of not much dialouge, the little action we get isn't all that and not a fan of Timothy either love literally all the other actors though. i feel this is better served as a series and could've been a true successor to GOT. i was like I feel there's so much history and lore within this universe hell they tell me just these 2 houses have hundreds or thousands of years history annnd it doesn't go into any of it. I get they don't want to exposition us to death but I can't be satisfied with the opposite extreme of that either which is. a movie over 2 1/2hrs with about 2 and a half real "action sequences" and they're about a hr apart from each other with all "set up" in-between. even seeing part 2 which I won't post spoilers just say that while I like it more I still harbor most the same sentiments that it would've been best as a series. I mean this Emperor of THE ENTIRE KNOWN UNIVERSE! not solar system or galaxy but known universe and we only get what 3 planets. I seen more locations in GOT than this movie 😂.

I'm a huge Dennis Vileneueve fan, I think he's one the best working directors and a genius, love his films, but I was kinda mixed on Dune. The movie needing to speedrun the story is one of the problems, I think if Dune got the Game of thrones treatment would be the best, but audiences seem to like Dune very much. However, HATING this movie, or finding it boring, that's kinda crazy, I can't relate to that at all :D
@jmalonemyth
@jmalonemyth 4 ай бұрын
Well, you are going to get some of that! Lol. It was part 1 but I don't think it should have been split. I agree we got piles of exposition and only half of the story and it was the bleak half. Having said that, they books are bleak. The books are about finding a path for humanity to survive an unknown doom and one person having the strength and courage to take that path even if it leads to massive destruction. This was book 1. As you said, you liked the mythology. This was just the base coat of paint for that mythology and it wasn't helped that you got half of the story. I can't say I really liked this one more than the original movie. The original prompted me to read the books. So once i read them I realized how inferior the movie was to the books, but I still like the 84 movie today. 80s cheese and all. I could see someone being bored with this movie so you aren't going to get hate from me. I think it is overrated. I didn't mind the mom. I thought Timothy was weak as Paul. I just didn't feel it. The rest of the cast was fine. Effects were top notch. Baron was suitably menacing. He was a campy mess in the original movie and the mini-series. I would wait until you can watch 1 & 2 back to back to make a final determination on Dune. Maybe there will be an extended director's cut of both glued together.

I mostly agree with your take. The director actually recently said something along the lines about how dialogue is not important for movies just visuals. The biggest problem is just that. With this movie there is no real emotion or attachment to the many characters set up. I can see how it would be boring without the interesting world-building. Timothee Chalamet was incredible in Wonka and I also hear in Part 2. Rebecca Ferguson is awesome in mission impossible and doctor sleep. But yeah for some reason in this movie they come off as dry. There is so much setup but no payoff. It definitely feels like half a movie.

I've always enjoyed the 1984 version, even with the Baron being a bit over the top and not being 2020's cgi. The new version the acting seemed simply reading lines, color grade all dark and slow. The line reading made the characters hard to believe or care about for me. Of course I'll watch part 2 tho. A lot of ppl crap on the 1984 and that's fine, you should at some point watch for yourself, even if not a reaction video. There's a spice diver fan edit that adds back an hour or so cut footage, as well as reorganizes the structure giving some added clarity, but the regular theatrical is still really entertaining in my opinion, even if not a carbon copy of the first Dune book. To each their own though.

Everyone who has a problem with your reaction and the thought that Jimmy does not love this movie can fck off. Kinda shocked you didn't hate it tbh. Great honest reaction! Also don't listen to those who say Paul can see multiple futures. That's vastly simplistic if not wrong for the constraints and scope of this movie. Suffice it to say he can see multiple futures in the books but in this movie, many of the flashes you saw and heard were intended to be more metaphoric than literal futures.

I'm excited for Dune 2, but Dune 1 did not deliver to the expectations given the hype around it. It did feel more like a setup for the second part than being its own standalone movie. Hence why I feel like all the good parts are coming in the second film, the strongest part of this film was Oscar Isaac because the only story arc that was completed was House Arrakis being betrayed by the Emperor to House Harkkonen. So overall agree with Jimmy that this was just world-building rather than actually delivering.

And to answer your question about the run time and if it was worth it, I can only answer that question with a resounding yes because I know what's coming. I don't know how I'd feel if I didn't. I've been watching the reviews of part 2 and people are generally blown away so I'm excited to see it. But after watching Nerd Cookies' spoilers video on You Tube there are some changes that were made that may not sit well with some. Having read the book is kind of a double edged sword. On the one hand I understand the more esoteric elements of the story. On the other hand some of the changes that will go over the heads of people who are new to Dune may be painful for those of us who aren't.

Jimmy, imma support you for being bored because from a fan who loves this movie in every way, I also think it’s “boring”. First, this story won’t deliver any joy, so know that if you’re gonna watch the second. It might deliver some level of visceral satisfaction though. Secondly, I’m both a huge fan of the book and Denis and this movie is “boring” to me objectively but amazing because I know precisely why it’s doing what it does to deliver the overall story. I deliberately went to watch the second film in a double feature with this one last night because I knew it would be the best experience of part one I would get. The book is notoriously thought to be unfilmable, not in the least because the author does a lot of internal narratives and characters reading between the lines of what is said and done, and there’s very little overt “world building”. So, as a “world building” structure, it has a monument task to make sure the events that follow come across well. This film is a total prologue to the events of the second film, and the second novel- which I know Denis wants to adapt as well. Paul is a growing character, so the acting may appeal in the second film a bit more.

This film is a triumph because it made itself interesting and compelling enough for a new audience when most of the events that would be interesting and compelling on film really happen in the latter half of the book.

Personally I found the books tedious, the 80's movie decent, but this one is the best adaptation of this story I've seen. Either way, it's fully understandable that this movie isn't for everyone, if someone debates that they might not have any irl friends.

You might prefer the Dune books written by Frank Herber's son Brian Herbert and his co-author Kevin J. Anderson. They're more straight forward and accessible and less philosophical.

Too much dead time wasted on people just staring at each and trying to look serious but it doesn't translate well because as you said i could never see the main actor as a serious character. Even the other characters are way over the top, they almost feel like their cartoon villains. The CGI and mythology is the only thing it has, it feels lacking in substance. The assassination plot feels like the only thing worth talking about in a 2hr+ movie.

so i also loved the visual style of this movie some scenes just look awesome up on the big screen and the music fits it perfect that being said i also dont like the kid main actor he just mehh and also being surrounded by excellent brown and black actors makes him look even weaker as an actor i just dont buy him as a leading man and also another big issue trope that this movie does is that tired old hollywood movie trope of white kid jesus savior for the poor and helpless brown and black people im sooo fucking tired of that bullshit like fuck you !!! maybe the sequel fixes it or makes it better dont know and i dont really care pffft good honest review jimmy

So, the story of Dune is actually a critique of the chosen one/messiah/white savior trope. It sets Paul up as one, and then he realizes what a horrifying concept that is. But by the time the implications are clear, it's too late. That's kind of the point. The seeds of that are planted here, but this is only part 1.

you clearly didn’t understand the movie at all. seriously. and that’s the point. your supposed to be like “wow this kid is supposed to lead an army?” and paul is 15 in the book which makes it even crazier. one of the main points in the story is that ITS NOT A WHITE SAVIOR STORY

I'm not sure about your friend. I assume your friend is black, like you and myself. But there has been this on going debate about how black people have trouble comprehending stories with deeper meaning. Particular hard SF. I disagree. Yes there are some of us that wants only flashy special effects, action every minute on the screen or they will get bored. But I know plenty of black people who love SF with deeper meaning, good character development and a storyline that doesn't explain every detail to you. You would think a story about an oppressed people who have their land exploited would be interesting to most people of color. And this is what Dune is all about. indigenous people raising up, politics, the danger of organized religions and the danger of following charismatic leaders. I myself belong to SF groups sites created by black people who love hard SF. We discuss our place in the future, the Cosmos and us colonizing space. we've read every one of Frank Herbert Dune book series. And we all agree this movie was fantastic.

"our place in the cosmos" means black people who are interested in space exploration and us traveling there in the future. Most sf writers don't include people of color. the groups I'm referring to believe we have a place in the future and in space exploration. We are also big on reading books about SF. Which is the reason most of these group members love Dune and the authors work. But I understand certain genres are not for everyone. @@mybatteryisdying1001

its not a white savior story, read the book or watch part 2 before you go embarrassing yourself. but since you probably wont do that, here are some SPOILERS paul is not a hero. paul becomes a tyrant after pursuing vengeance for his father despite knowing it will cement his place as a holy figure, leading to religious zealotry, and billions being killed in his name. its a cautionary tale of the destructive power of religious propaganda, greed and populist leaders.
