Once Paul drank the Water of Life, which is basically hyper-concentrated spice, it unlocked his potential as the Kwisatz Haderach and gave him perfect prescience. He not only sees all potential futures, but is able to choose the path he wants. He knew he was going to have to fight Feyd to become emperor. He also knew the Great Houses would initially reject his claim to the throne, hence his reluctance to take this path to begin with, since it starts the holy war that kills billions. You asked at the end if this is what the Bene Gesserit wanted. The answer is a resounding no. They wanted their creation, the Kwisatz Haderach, on the throne. Someone that they could control who had perfect prescience. In this way the Bene Gesserit could truly control and guide humanity. It was about power. Once they saw that the Atreides were getting out of their control they knew they had to end them. The Kwisatz Haderach on the throne, out of their control, and in direct control of the spice, was their worst nightmare.

Stilgar's fanaticism with the Lisan Al Gaib was played for comedic purposes throughout the film which garnerd some chuckles from the audience. When he said it at the end though no one was laughing because everybody knew millions upon millions of people are about to be destroyed for the Lisa Al Gaib.

That's why in the first movie when Paul was done with the box test, she told him that he inherits too much power. He said "Because of my father?" and she said "Because of Jessica. You have more than one birthright boy."

37:14, Paul pulled the same trick on Feed that Gurney did in their training session in the first movie. Feyd is so used to being a showy gladiatorial fighter he forgot this is for keeps not to gain glory. So while he was taking his time giving Paul the coup de grace, Paul used his own knife for a quick finish.

"Will this hurt the baby...?" Yes. Yes ma'am it will.

When Paul talks about gaining control, he doesn't mean over himself, he means over the known Universe. Which implies that anyone that resists dies. There is a reason the Bene wanted to control whoever achieved that kind of power, because a man who can see all futures and just pick the winning one is by and large unbeatable and can take control of everything.

"It's so interesting that the protagonists become people you don't know if you can root for." Precisely! There are so many cool and wildly out-there ideas in the books, and so far these two movies have done a fantastic job translating most of them to screen. Paul and Jessica both are transformed by the Water of Life, their core personalities mingled with generations of memories. But, you do know that Paul reluctantly leads the Fremen, whom he loves, into a future he is horrified by. He see's a clear path through the horror, or so we can hope. Love your reactions Addie :)

People keep forgetting. This was not a sequel. It was second half of same movie. The sequel to Dune is called .... Dune: Messiah. Continuation of Paul's story. But a separate book. Thanks for the great reaction.

When Paul tells Jessica he sees a narrow way through, there is a brief flash of him holding the knife in Feyd-Rautha. He knows he has to let Feyd stab him in order to win. He knows more or less exactly what he has to do at all times. That's why tells Gurney it is his burden - he knows precisely what he has to do, even if those things are morally horrible (like instigating a holy war), or physically painful for him, and failure to do those things has great consequences.

You are one of the few reactors to recognize that while Paul is the protagonist, he's maybe not a "hero." Nicely done.

In the book, Paul's sister, Alia, killed the Baron with a poisoned needle like the ones used for the box test. She was only a small child at the time. The movie condenses the time line by about 3 years.

This story is heartbreaking in so many ways - Paul, Chani - the way Paul is both trapped by and seduced by his fate is like Greek tragedy, and the devastation to Chani as an individual and to her whole people is crushing. Power is the ultimate addiction and the ultimate evil.

Denis (and Nolan), with Hans Zimmer is just pure magic. Incredible movie, especially considering the complex, long story.

The ending is tragic and left me feeling conflicted. "Are we the baddies?"

This ending with Chani is not in the book. In the book Paul and Chani have a child that is killed by the Harkoenen. Jessica explains to Chani that the Marriage with Irulan is lovelees and in later books Chani has PAul's Children.

Addie you absolutely need to watch this in theaters, specifically IMAX, you will love it even more

The prophecy when it comes to Chani being the desert spring whose tears wake him up is a bit confusing. Its important to remember that Chani isn't some random girl he found by chance. He saw visions of her before he even arrived on Arrakis. He was drawn to her because of the role she could play in the false prophecy but fell in love with her either despite of that fact or before he fully understood the role that she could play. As to why her tears did break him out of the trance -- I don't think they actually did. I think Paul waited to arise until she did it because it would solidify his role as the messiah, either on purpose or as a sort of coordinated effort by the ancestral presences that he and Jessica were now connected to.

This was absolutely incredible! I watched it in IMAX and my theater viewing experience has never been the same since. I'm going to re-read the book and finish the series. A true glorious gem of epic and science fiction. Not to mention all the complex, morally gray characters and the deep themes of ecology, politics, religion, and how they shape and change us, as a society and individuals.

Chani, also known by her intimate name Sihaya (meaning Desert Spring), will be a concubine of Emperor Paul Atreides. With the Emperor, she mothered Leto Atreides II the Elder, God-Emperor Leto Atreides II the Younger, and Ghanima Atreides. The book ends: Paul: “I swear to you now,” he whispered, “that you’ll need no title. That woman over there will be my wife and you but a concubine because this is a political thing and we must weld peace out of this moment, enlist the Great Houses of the Landsraad. We must obey the forms. Yet that princess shall have no more of me than my name. No child of mine nor touch nor softness of glance, nor instant of desire.” Jessica: “Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she’ll live as less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives.”

One of the biggest power moves is the stomp he does at the Emperor and so many reaction videos leave it out!

So glad they split this book into 2 parts. It really shows Paul's transition from a child heir, to a guerrilla soldier, to a holy emperor.

You should definitely go see this in theater. The seats shaking from that wall of sound that hits you when he rides the worm and the size of the screen just make this even more impactful.

An unforgettable experience in IMAX. If the team led by Denis can adapt Dune: Messiah with such skill as Dune, we are in for this generation's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Paul Muad'ib Atreides is the Kwiswatz Haderach, which touches on all the bases of the Bene Gesserit "prophecy." Remember that after taking the Water of Life, Paul said he could see one narrow path to avoid the bloodshed he feared. Since then, Everything he has done has been to follow that path.

It is definitely worth it to see it in theaters. Apart from how epic and beautiful this film is in general, there were a few scenes that stay with you if you watch them in the big screen. The worms attacking at the end is incredible, for example. The part where Paul finally becomes the leader of the Fremen and declares himself the Duke of Arrakis. But what I loved the most was the ending. I remember when Paul said "Silence!" to the reverend mother, you could feel the floor of the theater vibrating under your feet.

"How do you get off the worm?" Wait until it gets tired and it stops.

They really made his sisters ability to communicate from inside the womb not seem as weird as I thought it’d be and they handled that surprisingly well. BUT they really rushed through Paul’s awakening, his “a sleeper must awaken moment” and that kind of sucks. Also left out a lot of dialogue between Chani and Paul towards the end, and glossed over some very important and key details/scenes. But overall it was very good, just wish they’d have made it a bit longer, though I can understand not wanting a movie that drags on, but still.

So glad to see this! I think you really nail it when you say that everyone in this is terrifying in their own way. That is a very important part of Dune that the 1984 movie really failed to capture. Dune doesn’t really have any stupid characters. Every single character is operating at their peak. Even Rabban is fairly intelligent, though I don’t think that part of him got much screen time. In the book there are some important things that he catches that are missed by the Baron. When you read the book, all of these characters are scary. Denis Villeneuve has managed to capture that.

Yes you MUST see it in theaters. Soooo much fun.

MASTERPIECE!! The way everything falls into place "as written" is so good in this movie, even Paul choosing his Fedaykin war name as joke and then immediately learning it means "he who points the way" (so good). I love how Paul & Lady Jessica were bossing it, in roles that fate bestowed upon them.

One of the better films I've seen in a long time

Paul's not the hero, he's just the main character

Remember that Gurney Halleck described the Harkonnen as "animals." Watching them (or reading the novels), you get the impression that many forms of psychopathy run in their bloodline.

Dr. Kynes has a killer line in the original novel, before death - well, a great and sobering thought before death: "No more terrible disaster could befall your people than for them to fall into the hands of a Hero." Whether that "hero" who brings disaster to everyone, Fremen included, be Paul or anyone else. The more you stop seeing any person as a fallible, mortal human, and the more you start treating them like a false god, beyond criticism, the greater disaster you're willingly concocting for yourself. You'll notice how Paul and Chani's scenes together were down to earth, wholesome, turning their backs to any desires for power or pretend-godhood, and that's no coincidence. If you allow the principled person to die, and you instead raise a false idol in your own place, tragedy can follow easily, and many of your own followers will eventually follow the idea of you, but not you as a real person. That you're more willing to root for Chani by the end of the film, or anyone who's at least slightly moderate and not obsessed with foolhardy backstabbing for the sake of power, you're actually "vibing" the overall storyline correctly. :-) One of the main themes of Herbert's Dune novels, especially the original trilogy of novels, was that false prophets... may be hazardous to one's health... and that all human decisions and actions have consequences. (Counts for the fourth novel as well, as its events sent in an even farther future are a consequence of earlier events.) You could say the first few novels are about the implied rise, then fall of House Atreides, then a new rise - but under much shadier and darker circumstances - and the... well, the consequences. Hard to say if what comes after the renewed rise is a fall, though it is certainly a fall from grace compared to what the Atreides tried to be, even in a polity as cynical as the Imperium in the final years of Corrino rule. Frank Herbert was always explicit about wanting to explore the danger of charismatic leaders to society, the "antihero's journey" as opposed to a proverbial hero's journey, and the consequences for humanity, as well as individual people. Saying that Paul is fairly unique in the history of science fiction, as both the protagonist and antagonist of his own story, isn't at all inaccurate. When I read and reread the novels already years ago, what fascinated me was Paul's character development. It's a study in a young person gaining too much responsibility and too much power far too early and far too quickly, being in over his head in more ways than one, and learning that no matter the pressure he personally faced, he bears responsibility for his actions, his words, his decisions. All the more when they gradually but firmly spiral out of his control. It's a study in a flawed but generally well-meaning person becoming a cynic who throws away idealism, follows the "calculus of power" (as Irulan put it), only to discover years later that he no longer holds the reins of power in his own hands, and he's having a hard time convincing to see Paul as Paul, not as Muad'Dib, the idealised icon they project their own ambitions and desires onto. If you've ever seen Lean's film on Lawrence of Arabia, near the end, when Lawrence's Arab allies take Damascus, they meet at the local city hall and start negotiations over which tribe or clique gets to run what aspect of local government. This quickly devolves into arguments between them, because this group want to be overseers of the water utilities, these guys want to be bosses over the electric grid, or the telephone grid, etc. Cue arguments and infighting between people who took Damascus as a united force, just barely one or two days before that. Lawrence watches this, says nothing, but is flabbergasted that the previous unity of his allies has given in to cynicism and their own power plays and courtly intrigue. He returns home to the UK, rather disillussioned about that outcome. Unlike him, Paul can't go home anymore. Not to spoil too much, but a similar thing happens to many of the Fremen in power by the time of "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune". Infighting and corruption. (To the point that, despite nominal absolute loyalty to Paul, Paul feels increasingly like a figurehead emperor. A toy in the hands of the Fremen followers he "liberated" twelve years ago.) And yes, the "Messiah" in "Dune Messiah" was meant as ironic by Herbert. By the end of that story, Paul certainly no longer feels like a messianic figure, not even a cynical, fake messianic figure. I won't spoil more, but DM has one of the most interesting and thought-provoking stories in the whole series.

there are 20 books in the dune series the first 6 are by the original author. to answer your question as to where all of this goes, read the next book (dune messiah) then children of dune those three can close out the primary storyline.

While its true that it was clear Paul had the upper hand and nobody was going to stop him if they wanted to, its not the only reason why they let him kill the Baron. Fighting between the Great Houses is legal as long as they abide by certain rules of war, known as Kanly. Leaders personally fighting each other is perfectly acceptable, hence why when Paul challenged the Emperor, they let Feyd act as his champion and they let them fight it out. Side note: One of the rules of war is that you can't kill people with nuclear weapons. All the Great Houses have nuclear weapons, but nobody ever uses them because its illegal. They were usually more symbolic than actually useful. As per rules of war, Paul didn't use the nukes directly to kill anyone (not least of which was because he wanted the Emperor alive).

Bear in mind that these first two movies were essentially the first book in a 6 book initial series.

Okay, about the film Dune, we can say that Dune part 2 is a masterpiece, the best film of 2024. It’s been a long time since such amazing science fiction has come out in a long time. I haven’t been so happy about a film, from the plot, from the music and actors. the film is awesome in Timothée Chalamet and it’s true. The talented actor played Paul amazingly. I hope he gets an Oscar for best role.😊😊🤗💯👍

Hey Addie... There are quite a few changes from the novel, especially in this half of the story. There will be a thrid, probably in a few years. The novel the third movie will be based on is the second book of the original 6 novels by Frank Herbert, Dune Messiah. This book will wrap up (for the most part), Paul's story. After that, other characters take center stage. The novels Frank wrote were: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. Frank died in 1986, and years after in the early 2000s, his son, Brian Herbert and co-author Kevin J. Anderson started writing new novels (about 14 to 16 at the moment) mainly based on notes Frank has hidden in a safe deposit box in notebooks and antiquated computer discs. The main 6 novels are all worthwhile, and while they get really weird at times, are amazing! - Chani. In the novel, Chani and Paul's love story is at the center of this book. She never doubts him, and in fact, believe that he is the Mahdi. She even had Bene Gesserit training, so that when Jessica becomes a Reverend Mother, Chani becomes a Sayyadina (Friend of God) and one of the wise women of the Sietch. There is a lot more, and some of it is tragic. Suffice it say, Chani accepts that Paul must marry Irulan, and become Emperor. Jessica even consoles Chani with the final lines of the book, telling Chani, "we who bear the name of concubine, history will call us wives." - Alia. Paul's sister, Jessica & Leto's daughter, in the novel is born with the full knowledge of a Reverend Mother, because Jessica takes the Water of Life. The timeline in the book between the destruction of House Atreides and the Battle of Arakeen is 2 years. And during that time, Paul learns to be Fremen, falls in love with Chani, and helps..then leads the Fremen to choke off spice production. A lot of changes will have to be made if Anya Taylor Joy is playing Alia in Dune 3, as Dune Messiah takes place 12 years after Paul becomes Emperor. However...I cannot wait!

I thought it was weird that they played Chani like this, what with it being such a major departure from the story. However, upon hearing that there is a part three coming, then it kinda makes sense, because the finale part of this story and beginning part of Messiah doesn't really have a whole lot to it. So this modification/add-on is kind of a love story thing that was added for the next movie.

In a certain sense, the BG and the padishah-emperor were hoist by their own petard. The BG spread artificial superstitious legends on numerous planets, including on Arrakis, to make it easier for them to exploit any potential false prophet to their own power-hungry ends. Mohiam admits this wholeheartedly. But this backfires on them, as once Paul is influenced by the Water of Life and decides to go the cynical route of appeasing many of the Fremen's superstitions, in order to become their revolutionary leader/prophet, he's basically exploiting and twisting the BG's past "measures" to his own (short-term) benefit. About the only thing where his path aligns with what the BG originally wanted is the shortcut. The BG called their desired puppet-prophet, whom they could control, a "shortening of the way". A shortcut for them, for even greater power over society in the Imperium (all the while telling themselves that they're doing this with good intentions - LOL, nawww...). Paul took the shortcut, but in the way he himself wanted to. This doesn't make his shortcut and its motivations better than that of the BG. It makes it arguably worse, as the ultimate motivator was still power, though Paul at least harboured some (ultimately naive) hopes he will be able to "steer" humanity through the period when Fremen start a holy war against others. Paul did wrestle himself and his path free of BG manipulations, but by abusing stuff the BG set up many years ago, he still took the cynical shortcut. "The means to an end" and all that, but abuse of such means can bring dire consequences sooner or later. Things that Paul and others will face by the time of "Dune Messiah". I also find it bitterly funny that Jessica, despite her loyalties being so obviously and unhealthily divided between her genuine family (the Atreides) and the order that raised her and indoctrinated her (the BG), was constantly emphasizing "No, my loyalty is to Paul and Leto" throughout most of the story, up until she drinks the Water of Life. After that, she immediately stops having some sense of perspective and autonomy, like when she chastised Paul for even thinking of retribution/revenge, and instead does a 180 and becomes a Grade A agitator for the cynical shortcut. Villeneuve's take in particular implies that unborn-Alia and Jessica are in cahoots with (probable) past BG memories, through abuse of the spice, no longer having a guilty conscience at trying to position Paul as someone who should abuse the implanted superstitions to take advantage of the Fremen, purely for Atreides power interests. One has to wonder what the late Leto would have said about that, even at his most pragmatic. (I mean, even in the source material, Leto is explicit that he wants to be an ethical ruler, but his good treatment of Atreides subjects/retainers and the Fremen also doubles as a good bit of PR for the Atreides, and such. I think he'd still shake his head at seeing Jessica's and Paul's actions.) Shaddam IV, likely assessed rather accurately by the baron as a "jealous man", a man feeling insecure in his power, had simply paniced, and decided to remove Leto Atreides and the entire House Atreides from the picture, remove them completely from Landsraad and Imperium politics and power-sharing. Purely out of fear of the Atreides overshadowing his popularity or making other houses question their loyalty to House Corrino if Shaddam or anyone else went too far. Herbert described Shaddam as not a stupid man, but not that cunning either. His feeble insults towards Paul's father - calling him a weak man, despite admiring him as a friend of many years - or the fact that Shaddam had grown comfortable in the position held by his Sardaukar, which might have made them too prideful and undermined their military performance, also points to this. Shaddam is not a brilliant chessmaster whom the universe fears, he's a man terrified of House Corrino losing its grip on power, face to face with pressure from the other houses, or orders like the BG or the Spacing Guild. He was frightened of the Corrinos losing a firm position on an imagined "tripod of power" in the Imperium, and rather than addressing this in a less extreme way, he also took the cynical shortcut as a way out of the growing instability and decadence of the Imperium. When Irulan - who has ties to both the BG and House Corrino, of course - mentions in the prologue that her father always focused on the calculus of power, regardless of his ethics or convictions, that says a lot about Shaddam being willing to overlook his own friendship with Leto and adopt such drastic measures against those he sees as competition. The Atreides were a long-lived and storied house in the Imperium, as much as the Corrinos, so an attempt to wipe them out reeks of desperation, not power. The fact that Paul's reign over the Imperium doesn't bring better stability than under the Corrinos, and brings even more instability, chaos, division, and plotting against each other, really says something about how deluded both Shaddam and the BG were in thinking they could hold onto the reins of power if they just do this, this or that. They couldn't. And everyone's decisions have consequences, even very grave consequences for humanity. Bear in mind, even with the Water of Life's "enhancement" of his visions, Paul still isn't sure how accurate they are. He tells himself, surely they are more accurate now. Well, in the later novels, he himself arrives at the realisation that even his most accurate visions might have been a big load of BS, this entire time. Spice is still a psychoactive substance, a de facto hallucination-inducing substance. Expecting visions enhanced by spice substances to be good signposts on what to do next, is like thinking it's a good idea making crucial policy decisions based on wild dreams you've dreamt after a big dinner before going to bed. Herbert seems to imply this was the case. Regardless of how captivating the spice-enhanced visions were, their accuracy is always in question, the characters defending them unreliable narrators. (This also goes hand in hand with how Herbert lambasted attitudes á la "yes, sir, Mr. charismatic leader sir, what should we do next, without question", even in the interviews he gave over a number of years regarding the Dune series.)

The Fremen Prophecy is fake, but the Bene Geserit one is essentially real but not a good thing in the immediate future.

It's important to remember that the 'prophecy' was a literal story invented by the Bene Gesseret to fit the limited vision of the future they had. They planted the story so that more primitive tribes would follow him when the time came.

Personally I don't see it as a choice about preferring part one or part two as they are both fantastic and are two halves of one story. So you can't have one without the other. Both are beautifully made with Greig Fraser's cinematography being simply stunning. Bring on Dune Messiah.

I know it's super last minute but this movie is back in IMAX theaters. Only until tomorrow though because The Fall Guy is coming out on Thursday/Friday. Hope you can squeeze in a show before it leaves again

"You want to control people? Tell them a messiah will come." That right there sums up a major theme of these books and really much of what to see today in the real world.

What you need to do is keep a look out this summer for a Dune 1 and Dune 2 double feature in IMAX or Dolby theaters. They have to do it. It would be too perfect. Even more perfect if they cut out the end credits of part one and make a long movie with an intermission.

it blew everyone away

One of the things I think is amazing about this movie (and the first one) is how brutal and sudden the deaths are. A lot of movies draw out the deaths of key characters, but in Dune part 2 especially it’s sudden and then it’s over. And during the fights (especially the duel at the end) there’s nothing else happening, everything is focused purely on the fight.

Please go see this in a theater if you can! Love the reactions, but experiencing this is a cinema is so different.

I highly recommend reading the book, it will definitely scratch that itch for more, not to mention give you something to do while you wait for Dune Messiah. It will also give you a greater appreciation for the depth of this story, because there was a lot that the movies glossed over. That is, if you can make it through the first part. It's very dense, not the easiest read. Took me two goes to get through the whole thing, granted I was like 12 the first time, but still.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This first book is just the story of a man becoming the single most badass entity in the universe

It's worth several watches for the story and the differences. Even more in IMAX for the experience
