The scene of Paul embracing his role is some of the best screenwork done in years, so awe-inspiring and so haunting. One speech and he convinces millions of fanatics that he is the savior their entire culture has waited for.

I’m glad you appreciated Rebecca Ferguson’s performance, I feel like it doesn’t get praised enough how she transformed from caring mother to plotting Bene Gesserit!

Imagine having your whole culture coopted to be turned into blind zealots rampaging through the galaxy, leaving your planet empty. That had to be rough for Chani.

Should be clear, Denis has said that he’s taking a break from Dune for a little while so he can explore new projects and he wants Timmy to get a bit older for Messiah. He also said he only wants to make a trilogy and doesn’t want to push past Herbert’s work in Messiah. Definitely the best choice

The "flames" from the emperor's ship are due to static induced by the sand, blown by the storm, hitting the Holtzman shield of the ship. And the atomics sent by Paul are meant to blow up a hole into the shield wall, and allow the worms to pass through and attack. Oh and Jessica taught the Chakobsa to Paul, so yes, she knows... :)

The Confrontation of Gurney and Rabban was perfect. Rabban was a Tyrant, good at oppression of people that are already down. Gurney is a Fighter of the same caliber as Duncan, with both of them being considered better than even the Sardaukar. And it was Duncan *and* Gurney who trained the Atreides Army to such a degree that word already got around the Atreides army is almost on par with the Sardaukar. So Gurney dispatching Rabban in two quick moves, highlighting their ridiculous gap in skill, was perfection.

I love how the harkonnen spice harvesters look like ticks sucking the blood from the planet, just gorgeous visual storytelling and symbolism I also love that in pauls symbolic vision of him following jessica in the south and billions of people dying across the galaxy you can hear water dripping in the background which is a nice addition for non-book readers to associate that vision with the later line "lad then to paradise" showing to those who dont know the full story yet that he chose to kill all of those people and solidifying that paul is a new person now

On your next rewatch, take note of the not drugged slave in the gladiator pit. It's Lanville, whom has very short brief lines in Part 1 but is recurring up until the attack on Arrakeen. He is the same guy that calls "shields" as the family disembarks from the landing ship for the first time on Arrakis; asks Leto and Gurney to come back indoors because its getting too hot out; and also the one that warns of Stilgar holding a knife before his meeting with Leto.

I love that there was no music during that final duel. Other movies would have had loud, dramatic music in the score but having none here makes it so much more dramatic. No music until the duel is over. Brilliant. As far as Walken's performance, I really think he was playing it as a man who had realized a long time before that he has lost and there's really nothing he can do about it at this point. Just my interpretation of what he was doing.

My favorite fan theory is that the voice at the beginning is Leto II recording in his journals and speaking to us across time and space.

It's pretty amazing to watch a Dune reaction in which the person reacting is explaining things to the viewers rather than vice-versa. Well done!

2 things that are my favorite parts of the movie that you picked up on. 1. How the thopter blew up within the shield itself 2. Irulans costumes. Her chain mail headdress was so elegant yet intimidating. Her and Jessica’s costumes were so cool.

Dune is what happens when Luke instead kills the Emperor, and says “The Emperor, and my father Darth Vader, were absolute p*ssies. Prepare yourselves.” I’m glad Star Wars had a happier ending, even though I LOVE Dune and it’s message lol. 😅

The cinematography, the music, the setting, the acting...all combine to elevate this movie onto another level. It might be a long long time until we see something like this again.

I never thought we'd get a sci-fi movie of this calibre in this time. I'm so glad its had such a great impact on everyone and it gives me hope for the future of sci-fi movies in general.

It was nice to have someone who really knew the story react to the movie.. I love all the other people's reactions, but you know the story.

It's not about the Harkonnens "coming out clean" it's about using the secret as political leverage to to make a deal with the Emperor. Also, I think the visual design of House Corrino is meant to focus on open air and greenery. It's the most temperate looking place we've seen. Caladan had plenty of water and green, but it also seemed drizzly and cold, the other two places we've seen are obvious in their drawbacks.

In my opinion, this movie absolutely deserves to be re-released in theaters at least once. If not multiple times, I would go see it every time. It’s brings back memories of when people would actually line up hours ahead of time to see a blockbuster movie. I would love to go see it in a theater again.

Leto was not weak. He refused to participate in the evil actions of the Empire and the Great Families. He behaved in a just manner, no matter the provocation. That is the definition of strength. The weak person says "It's necessary" to excuse their bad actions.

I'm not going to lie I absolutely love the esthetic of house harkonnen.

Best Sci Fi movie I’ve ever seen - everything - the story - the cinematography - the characters - the visuals - so enjoyable !!

I actually loved Christopher Walken as the Emperor. He played it so subtly. To me the feeling it invoked was a feeling that the Emperor is allowed to be normal because he has all the power (or thinks he does) while in contrast the Harkonnen are super reactive and fearful and their entire culture is the same because they live in fear of the Emperor, the Harkonnen are sorta like a catch-all as a representation of the other great houses, it's implied that even house Atreides has a checkered past, Leto's father was somewhat of a brute and Leto wanted to be the father for Paul that his father wasn't for him, which drew people to Leto because he cultivated a culture of trust, communication, community and loyalty making it easy to turn the Emperor against Leto who the Emperor saw as a threat to his power and authority and ultimately his safety. The Emperor is meant to appear as old, tired, with too much shoved onto his plate trying to walk a knifes edge and I think Walken did a phenomenal job. I also loved the touch that the Barren was trying to crawl to the throne while the Emperor, tired and haggard from a lifetime of holding that responsibility just ignores the throne which is nothing but a symbol, a stupid man's idea of power, and he addresses the real power in the room: Paul. Paul also completely ignores the physical throne because it's just a symbol. In the books when Paul does sit on the throne he sees the physical throne as nothing more than for a leader to hide how tired he is.

The scene after Paul's resurrection is, IMO, already one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. The creeping sense that Paul's power has suddenly lurched into a very dark place; the way he embraces how terrifying and alien he is to his followers - 'I am the one your mothers warned you about'. He is exulting in how utterly petrifying he must seem to the people in the cave - he is no longer some kind of Jesus figure with whom they can communicate on a human level; he is now something alien, frightening, unpredictable, that they must simply fear and obey. He can look inside their heads! Imagine a god who can look inside your head... You'd better believe in him as hard as you can, right? Otherwise he'll know, and who can say what he'll do to you? It is one of the most startling transformations by any actor. The twinkling eyed, soft, determined young man is replaced by a kind of supernatural demon, with a voice that can shatter buildings. This film has the feel of a film that will be spoken of in the same breath as all-time greats in ten, twenty years' time, if it isn't already being spoken of in such a way. Villeneuve hasn't done anything half as good as either Dune film IMO. It feels like he was born to film this story. And I think part of the reason it's so great is that he's been able to see the other adaptations and learn from their mistakes. Lynch's version showed him what did and didn't work, what not to do, what kind of scale was appropriate, what to include and not to include. Ditto the noughties version. It's like Michael Mann remaking LA Takedown as Heat - he learned from the earlier version and made something almost perfect, and Villeneuve has done the same.

I would spend so much money to see extended cuts/deleted scenes of both part 1 and 2, even though Denis V isn’t super for extended cuts

One of the best freaking movie I've ever watched. Edit: GODDAMN I still get chills throughout the end. The facial expressions from everyone is incredible and Timothee's performance is just chef's kiss.

And yes, a sniper occultation to accompany the eclipse. I imagine Paul thinking of OPPENHEIMER and saying, “Yeah, I got your Trinity Test . . . right here!”

I think the changes was probably for better flow. Baby Alia would have been creepy if she was born just like the other iterations. Chani not giving birth to Paul’s son didn’t bother me. I’m grateful Denis Villeneuve doesn’t like using heavy dialog and his movies never disappoint. It was brilliant not using any music during Paul and Feyd’s final battle. Just hearing grunts, blocks, and knives clashing made the scene more powerful and Hans knew less is more in this scene. Great reaction! 🍻

Everyone who'd read the book going into this had certain scenes of the book which really resonated with them, but were changed for the film. For whatever reason, mine was the fight between Paul and Feyd. The movie version is FANTASTIC cinema, but in the book it's a duel on so many more levels. It's a dance macabre of despair, training, treachery, strategy, rage, and in the end, bitter victory. I'd be ungodly greedy if I let that ruin my enjoyment of this amazing film, but it did give me a twinge.

I’m also in agreement that Christopher Walken as the emperor left something to be desired. I don’t think he gave a bad performance or even that his face is too recognizable, honestly I think his voice is too distinct and that when you hear him talk the first thing that comes to mind is “more cowbell” I wish they would have explored Kaitain a little more and we could have got a look at the golden lion throne.

Every time I watched this film and every time I watched reactions I love it more and more. Modern classic. Already in my top 5 movies ever.

One detail that I adore, but see barely anyone pick up on (at least on first watch, cause it took me a second watch to figure out and a third one to make sure it's deliberate), is that Chani's tear was completely irrelevant to resurrecting Paul. As in the novel, Paul had already survived the Water of life, but got trapped inside his own mind, so at that point what's needed is just to give him another drop of the water of life for his body to sense it from the outside and him snapping back into reality. This is why when Jessica then wants Chani to resurrect him, Chani realizes that Jessica is basically just dragging it out purely so that "some stupid prophecy" about "Sihaya aka desert spring" can be woven into the moment to enhance the religious impact on the Fremen. So understandably, Chani instead of resurrecting Paul justifiably sets her concern aside and gets pissed at Jessica ("do it yourself") until Jessica literally forces her to participate in the mythmaking. It's freaking genius.

This is the best Dune reaction I’ve seen.

Ever since seeing her as Rose the Hat, Rebecca Ferguson has scared the hell out of me. And *then* I realized I’d seen her before in a Mission: Impossible movie. I don’t quite understand how someone so mind-bogglingly stunning can also be a chameleon. Oh yeah… talent. Meanwhile, her portrayal of Jessica in the second movie out-Roses Rose. I mean, if you ever need to cast an utterly terrifying female lead, and you also want her to be drop-dead gorgeous, Rebecca’s your girl. And I have no idea, but I’ll bet she’s a sweetheart in person.

I watched this in IMAX and literally had to put my earbuds in because it was so loud 😂 I've never had to do that with any other IMAX movie but the sound design in these films is crazy. It was a fantastic experience, though, the worm scene in particular was incredible to watch on a massive screen

It's true. In the adaptations, Stilgar is to Dune as Gimli is to Lord of the Rings. They've been made a bit into comic relief, but I'm okay with this.

I kept getting "Life of Brian" flashbacks when Paul was talking about how the Bene-Gesserit planned this.

In the novel the fremen would never leave tracks on the sand they had the last guy hiding tracks they didnt show it in the movie.

I think the "flames" coming off of the Emperor's ship is its shield getting de-polarized from all the static electricity in the air due to the Grandmother storm that's coming. That's why Paul timed his attack with the storm because it will fuck up their shields.

Denis did it. The impossible book to adapt to film. He did it. I haven't stopped watching it since it came out. Lisahn al Gaib! When Paul challenged all the Fremen in the Circle called them all out and told them their prayers and dreams. POWERFUL!! ALL TIMER!!

I think Rabban's incompetence/weakness in this film is just a commentary on the nature of that kind of man. He goes into battle with a whip. You don't use a whip in battle, you use it to torment people who can't fight back. The second he meets any resistance, he flees or he loses. His nickname is "Beast" -- Dune doesn't have a very optimistic view regarding the fate of humans who behave like animals

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that, during that scene in Sietch Tabr, we actually hear Alia talk to Jessica - it's her who suggests targeting the weak ones. Someone else also suggested that she may be possessing Jessica.
