I will never understand why WB goes to the trouble of putting the IMAX scale on the Blu-rays for Nolan's movies, but for Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, they absolutely refuse. "Meh, no biggie." Why the hell can't we have the best aspect ratio possible for these films?!

Watching Dune in IMAX is like watching an entirely different movie. I didn't even know that the Arakeen base had hills behind it.

The IMAX version is certainly better as it is able to display the depth and scale better - truly immersive

I watched Dune in IMAX the first time and I still miss seeing the full scale of these images. I hope they do a 16:9 ratio bluray edition like the IMAX enhanced feature on Disney+. I also hope WB will re-release Dune in IMAX just before the release of Dune Part 2. That would be so much fun!

Not only did they cut the length of the movie, they also cut the height!. I want the extended cut and full height version!

The 2.39 shots look very cool, but when expanded to 1.43:1 you can really feel the scale of the world.

I've gotta say, one of the biggest pleasures I've had in my 22 years of living was getting the chance to see this film in IMAX. I was pretty young and I never got to see the LOTR trilogy in IMAX. This experience makes up for it, and I will always cherish it forever. Thank you Legendary... and thank you Denis Villeneuve.

wow... during the first minute or so I thought it wasn't that much of a deal, but by the time I was halfway through the video I realized IMAX version has a real purpose. It really makes you feel so small inside that gigantic Dune's universe. Unfortunately, there is no IMAX in Bolivia :(

The IMAX experience was incredible! The way Dennis Villaneuve made the film look massive in scale and truly cinematic.

I paid a lot to watch in real IMAX when I could’ve watched streaming- so glad that I did! The sweeping desert scenes were like nothing else! Beautiful film which I wish hadn’t been cut. I want to see the entire 8 hours!

I just watched "The tragedy of Macbeth" which has a similar aspect ratio to the Imax version of Dune in a regular theater. Was awesome. It made no sense (other than marketing) to have 2 versions of Dune. They could have shown the IMAX version everywhere else and it would have been fine.

IMAX is not only aesthetically pleasing, it shows more artistic expression and the ambience the film is trying to set. Shots look much more alive while standard ratio looks like it really is just a film. On top of that, the speakers are just amazing and really gives you kick, which puts you into the films perspective. IMAX is an important piece of cinema.

Does anyone know why the standard version exists? Why not just release the IMAX format everywhere? Kinda like the Snyder Cut. I know it’s not going to be the same resolution or quality as true IMAX but at least give us the full image 🤧

Full screen used to mean cutting off the sides of a widescreen image. Now widescreen means cutting off the top and bottom of an IMAX image. Whichever image includes the most information should always be available in the post theatrical product sold to consumers, but the studios have other ideas.

On IMAX the scene where Paul is about to ride in the sandworm you can really feel the depth of the desert and the size of the worm. It's really cool

Wow. Can't unsee this now. I saw both ways and certainly got more from the IMAX, but I assumed that most of it was from the sound advantage (which is almost half the experience in my opinion). But being months ago now, I forgot how different it truly was

I’m really bummed we didn’t get the IMAX footage for the 4K release. I saw it in theaters, and so glad I did. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll release it with IMAX footage after part 2 comes out!

I was so bummed that the IMAX release wasn't widely available here. I could have watched that 20 times over and still be excited to go back. The aspect captures SO MUCH MORE of the setting and scale of the environments. That shot of the worm facing Paul is 9000% more powerful. Truly an epic movie.

damn, i thought the architecture looked big in standard aspect ratio but in imax it looks BIG, BIG

I saw Dune Part 1 three times, but only the last time did I see it in IMAX (wasn't able to see it that way previously). WOW. I love this movie so much, but to see it as it was intended, on IMAX, really made a difference. This vid shows just how much IMAX reveals, and I have to say that the audio quality in the theater was just clearer and really well-equalized. I don't think I will ever watch another Dune film unless it's in an IMAX theater.

If you shoot the film in 4:3 it fits the IMAX, but you have to cut the top and buttom to fit the cinema screen. If you shoot in 2.39:1 it fits the cinema screen but you have to cut the left and right side to fit the IMAX. It's not that IMAX in it self is better. You get the best when you watch the aspect ratio the movie was shot in.

Seeing it in IMAX opening night here in the uk and seeing the differences on this makes me appreciate it even more than I already did!

I'm personally thankful the home screening version is the standard theater version. My home isnt an IMAX theater. It would be a reverse big box liemax experience. Ive watched it about 50 times in both liemax, standard theater, and home viewing. I recently saw it in the scope of a TRUE IMAX and it took my breath away. It was like the first time i watched it again. I cant imagine i would have had the same awe had i been used to looking at the images this way. Imax is soooo much more than just the aspect ratio, that to take a third of it and separate it from the rest of what makes up the IMAX experience, would cheapen it when they inevitably re-release it over and over.

The only shots I think are hurt by a larger aspect ratio are the Worm Shots - with a narrower image, the worm feels enormous, the frame can't possibly contain it. A bigger frame showing the whole worm makes it look smaller somehow.

I just watched the reissue of Dune in IMAX tonight, and it's exactly how it should be viewed. The size and scope of the film on that screen is legitimately beyond words. I cannot wait to see Part Two in IMAX as well!✨️

Imagine how much rendered image time that crop represents. I made damn sure to see this in the Imax.

I saw it 2x in IMAX and once more in "digital" and came to the conclusion that IMAX was 15-20% better. The "digital" version was blurry at times and definitely lower grade.

Love the IMAX shots! I don't really have an issue with the widescreen format but because the original intention of that shot was realized in the taller framing, having it cropped changes that initial framing intention. If they had chose to go standard for the whole film, I'm sure the framing would've been different for those shots and be equally as epic!

Bro you have you no idea how happy i was to watch this in imax and not only because it was amazing because it was the first Denis film i got watch in theaters

I feel like the standard version makes you feel like watching a movie, whereas 1:43:1 makes you feel like a part of the movie. I feel included, almost like a spectator of everything that happens. Such an immersive experience!

The only condition I put, to see DUNE again, was that it had to be in IMAX (4:3) or Open Matte (16:9), but to date there is no way to see DUNE in IMAX or Open Matte. And therefore I will continue without seeing it again, that's how it was with Blade Runner 2049, I waited, waited and waited, until finally I could see it in Open Matte.

This is one of those movies that are probably worth splurging for IMAX on. Sadly the nearest IMAX to me is a nine hour drive. It's only something I get to do when I holiday in really big cities.

I watched Dune in IMAX Melbourne Australia, and the Paul fight scene with Jamis was very different from the normal release, in terms of lighting. The IMAX version was displayed so dark, that it was almost night time, like the sun had not yet crested the horizon. There was less color in these scenes, representing almost night. The non-IMAX version feels like the fight scene could be in the middle of the day, in shade. Thank you for this video, it is excellent.

I saw it in IMAX, and would love that version at home, but some of those scenes are expanded to the side for the home version, eg. an early close-up of Zendaya. Would be good to see a video comparing those. However, the home version does crop a scene with one of the 'chess piece ships' (as I call them) overlooking the people on the beach after they arrive.

I just watched Dune: Part One (reissue) on IMAX and I can only say this video doesn’t do a complete justice. It is an immersive experience to a high scale. Dune is one of my favorite movies (if not my favorite) and all scenes that were in IMAX just blew me away completely. For those who still may have a chance, take it.

I so much hope (if you have seen Cameron/Villeneuve talk with each other video...) that there may be a good chance after completing part two ( and having enough extra footage as in part one) to complete a several hour version of the whole book in one movie... I honestly think that if part two is as good/great as all of us want it to be, that there really is a chance for it!

I first watched this in Standard and just by this video and comment section convinced me to watch it again in imax.

I watched it in IMAX opening Night with pre-ordered tickets. Never regretted a single step.

I had the pleausre to see DUNE on IMAX. My country has very limited IMAX screens. And somehow i watched this movie only to realise it was the last show in the country. Thank you Denis Villenueve and Thank you for reminding the BluRay version is nothing compared to IMAX version. The magic was totally missing in 4KBR version. I hope one day WB release the IMAX BR version or re-release the film on IMAX to experience the EPIC again.

Nothing can quite describe the feeling of seeing it IMAX. I want the 4k BluRay release to include IMAX enhanced as an option, or even if they release a special version of it. It's stellar.

So grateful I was able to see this in IMAX. To be honest though the biggest difference between the two versions was the sound. The entire theater was shaking when the word attacked the sand harvester.

Just watched the blu ray and could sure feel the ‘squeeze’. You could really feel that it was meant to be seen in the tall aspect ratio and not wide

I wish I could get my hands on Dune in 70mm IMAX. I wish there were more 4K discs in that format.

I don't need the black sidebars if they would go with a full Imax presentation for 4K Blu-ray but add the screen information above and below the current picture would be a good solution imho. It keeps the cinema experience unique (I'd hope to watch it again before part 2) and adds a bit more than the current version.

Glad I saw this in Imax and really wish the 4k UHD blu-ray was enhanced to feature it.

I think films shot originally on a specific aspect ratio should be released on a cinema with that aspect ratio so that the full picture will be completely shown to cinema goers, not cheat on their viewing experience. If 4:3 let it be 4:3 released on dvd and blu ray. Same with the wide screen or 16:9 aspect ratio.

There is only a minority of these scenes that struck me as very different (and better/more arresting) in the IMAX aspect ratio: in a lot of cases, there's actually not a lot to see (texture-wise or context-wise) in the added "strips". But the reality is that it's not the aspect ratio per se that makes the IMAX experience better but the immersiveness of having a significant portion of your entire field of view taken up by an IMAX screen that is both (typically) much larger AND better approximates the dimensions of our overall field of view. We won't really be able to replicate anything like the full IMAX experience at home unless they start building large enough screens at affordable enough prices to be able to fit a proper IMAX field of view in front of our eyes. Given the implications for the size of the market for IMAX-formatted films (e.g. on 4K blu-ray or streaming), I have my doubts about how often we'll be able to get an IMAX-like experience from Nolan & Villeneuve films, for example, if we have to rely on the first run and then on the very occasional wide re-release (and later on in IMAX rep cinemas - assuming such things wver come to be...)

The fault lies on IMAX not producing dedicated auditoriums that have a screen size of 1.43. They are "converting" existing auditoriums and calling it IMAX but it's only in 1.90 aspect ratio. I saw Dunkirk in 1.43 IMAX film and it was glorious! IMAX really needs to go back to basics if they still care about presentation and immersion.

how come i only found this vid just now? thanks to your video, now i really get why i love the IMAX format so much. I´ve loved it ever since Nolan´s The Dark Knight but i never fully grasped, why i did. The IMAX Format allow for a much better immersion, as if you´re in the scene with the characters. It adds context to the focus objects, so that you have a better understanding how large or small objects are, which allows for that immersion to happen in the first place. Even in the action scenes, seeing the legs of the fighters give you more perspective, on how close you´re in the fight, it gives you an idea of distance. Certainly, IMAX Format is not perfect for every shot, but damn, it certainly is very good, if not near perfect for a lot of them.

Great. Before long we’ll be switching back to full screen tvs again.

Im honestly kind of baffled by the decision to crop it. Most theaters can display that format fine if not better than widescreen. Its not like there are anamorphic theaters any more. Seeing it cropped probably contrubuted to me feeling that it was claustrophobic and had a rushed pace. This format will also look better on most TVs.

I have a few basic questions and it would be great if someone could explain this to me. Ive noticed that directors like Christopher Nolan combine IMAX and standard format scenes in their movies as a method of storytelling and creating different moods and reactions in the audience. Its very stange to have the black bars dis- and reappear on my home tv between different scenes in movies like Interstellar and Dunkirk but i was told that this is done on purpose. Now i wonder if movies like Dune are shot in Imax aspect ratio in the first place , then why are they not sold in IMAX format on physical media and streams ? In other words why do i have to live with the black bars on my Dune 4k bluray when my tv is actually capable of displaying the IMAX format ? Havent i understood a fundamental problem here ? Is there still a difference between the IMAX aspect ratio and our tvs at home ? Because i thought it was all the same by now.

This looks amazing. And I'm coming from finding this aspect ratio a little off in these current times more so on the Snyder cut of Justice League. But this looks like it was meant to be this way.

Well our Cinema "Kinopolis" in Frankfurt Germany has 12 rooms and room 1 is with 3D, 4K, HFR, 4K Laser, Dolby Atmos, D-BOX, and Premium Seats. The Screen is 23,00 x 9,80m and it has 650 Seats, i watched DUNE last Week and it was the best Cinema Experience ive ever had!

i do regret not watching it on imax. hope we will get another chance of dune 1 on cinemas before dune 2 comes out

With the second film being entirely filmed in IMAX, I hope there will be more outcry for an IMAX home release. I saw both films in theaters but there's no IMAX in my country so I'll probably never get a chance to see the films as intended unless there's a home release.

I was born & raised in a 4:3 world, people had mixed feelings about black bars top & bottom when widescreen became a thing, now the same feelings again when we are basically back to a 4:3 ratio (IMAX 1.43:1 - Old TV 1.33:1). lol
