Quick thoughts on dungeon doors and open vs closed maps. Comments welcome.

Hi Robin! It's great to see another video from you. It's been a long time. The doors look very good. The acrylic base was a good idea too. I think that having open terrain like that doesn't matter if your gaming group is having fun with it. If you wanted to add some mystery, you could probably make some kind of visibility distance template that would cover a portion of the map board while letting the party see in a radius around them. I would make this perhaps out of foam core. Cut a hole the size of your visibility distance in the center of the board, and have the party placed in the middle of that hole. It should rest o top of your terrain without disturbing it. Then just move it around as the party moves. I don't think that you have to cover all of the terrain board this way, but having a degree of uncertainty around your party with that foam core board could do the trick. You could also withhold some terrain from the board until your party gets close enough with line of sight to see it. The game Heroquest has a good way of handling this. You can look into how that's played on KZfaq or Rumble if you don't already know. That could give you some ideas. Overall, letting the party see the entire board may not matter so much if you place monsters and furniture on the board only when the heroes enter visible distance and line of sight to them.

Nice ideas for the bases. Gotta try that at one point now that I can 3D print stuff. About what to hide, I personally prefer to keep things hidden, but it can lead to time lost to drawing stuff and putting props on the map. I mostly do outdoor encounters for now so it's fine, but I want more and more to do indoor dungeons, and last time I made a big chapel, and there was quite a lot of downtime because I had to draw rooms one by one. Still on the fence of laying down the map directly tho. I may find a good temporary compromise by letting the party find ways to get informations and possibly get the map of the dungeon beforehand, so that it may feel a bit less meta when the players are actually able to see the layout beforehand (And, of course, there will be surprise rooms and traps still not drawn beforehand). I recall a friend that had the map already drawn but used multiple pieces of paper to hide the overall layout. I may try that at one point, but I recall it was a bit messy.

It’s interesting because its that reset / downtime when you organise stuff or draw it that can slow things down. For a while I printed huge Pathfinder adventure module maps and used Lego sheets on them which I would reveal. Even that came with overhead in lifting and shifting things about. I suppose its also a topic that people like to separate from board games. Descent does sometimes reveal a few rooms at once but we tend to put it in a lighter skirmish type board game vs role playing which would have a little more exploration and the concept of suspense in regard to the unknown.
