DuPont Train Derailment 2 Years Later

On December 18, 2017, during the inaugural run over the Point Defiance Bypass, Amtrak Cascades Train 501 derailed at a curve and bridge over Interstate 5. 3 people lost their lives and 57 people were injured. The cause was the WSDOT, Amtrak, and Sound Transit both failing to mitigate the curve and for not providing adequate training to the engineer over the new SC-44 Charger and the route.

I've seen 181. The crash still leaves a raw spot in my mind, because a railfan died in that very crash.

I remember seeing the crash on the news, I was watching a CNN 10 video and I think they were talking about Disney buying out Fox when I noticed something saying that a Amtrak train derailed in Washington with several injured. My first thought that it was minor but Dad showed me the news and I saw a huge disaster. Seeing that still hasn't left my mind.

Was stationed @ Ft. Lewis from 1985-86, living n Steliacoom. There were plans to straighten out the S curve, but wasn’t implemented due to cost & budget constraints.

I was on this train. I was in the the car that dangled off the bridge. I was scared out of my mind. I was playing on my iPad and I took out my earbuds to fix them and I heard screeeech! Bang! The bang was the sound of the train cars hitting the ground. The train car I was in was shaking. I felt like it was gonna fall. I was able to Train hop the dangled car to the other car. I ran to the bridge and saw the Loco. It was crazy. The Loco was destroyed. I didn't know that happened. I took pictures. After that, I never rode an amtrak cascades train again. I went back to NY. Shaken up. I'm lucky to be alive. Respects to the families of the victims killed in this crash. Hopefully nothing like this happens again

I remember this, and my bus fan friends had a bus excursion dedicated to the 2 railfans that died in this accident they were friends of my bus fan friends that Hosted that event, it was my first bus excursion but i did pay my respects to the people who died in this sad and unfortunate accident.

I remember seeing the traffic jams in Yelm and Roy (my hometown) shortly after the crash. Couldn't believe my eyes at the amount of cars and trucks that went through those towns!
