Rio’s a great bass line but some of Johns other lines are just as challenging..”Last chance on the stairway” is a real dig in piece . Vastly underrated Mr Taylor 👍🏻

And Shadows on Your Side! Phenomenal bassline that one. Also love the bassline on Faster Than Light. You're right, there are so many more besides Rio.

Its a misconception that John Taylor is underrated but instead is regared as a " Players Player " Just look up the amount of John Taylor Bass Covers on KZfaq & you'll see what i mean about a Players Player as they all love his bass lines & predominantly the sound he git from his Matsomoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 bass guitar & msny other Aria Bass Guitars he used in the 80s... I get where your coming from but i can assure you amongst all the bands that have come & gone Duran Duran are still going strong & many bassists in famous bands have quoted John Taylor as a major influence on why they even started playing the bass guitar... I was the same... I played drums & i knew that to help with song writing i'd need an acoustic... As back in the day it used to be on pianos but they are just too expensive/too big & heavy & hence why the acoustic guitar was the preferred choice for those willing to learn it for helping them write songs going back to the 40s & 50s onwards & it alwats helped to be able to play as many instrument they you could play... John Taylor like many bassists plays the acoustic guitar & it was common sense that the more instruments you could play the better chance you had of getting in a band and its always been my theory that certain people are destined to play specific instruments even if that wasnt the instrument of your choice & from the 70s onwards the bass guitar was taking a more prominent forward approach within bands & the reason so many 80s bassists stuck out from 70s bassists was the fact that they released they wanted to play bass guitar but they wanted bass guitsas with brighter tones... This was so they could be heard more when playing within the mix of any songs they recorded & the 80s was akin to the Baby Boom of bassists as what was once thought of boring & the bassist sat at the back of the band predominantly not doing much changed as each decade went on as even Paul McCartney had absolutely no interest on playing the bass guitar fir the very reason i mention but Paul McCartney has went on to be classed as one of the best bassist in the word along eith James Jamerson for the way they composed their bass lines... I too had absolutely no interest in playing the bass guitar as i too had the misconception that the bass guitsr was boring & since it only had 4 strings it would be limited but as soon as i picked a bass guitar up i knew instinctively that this was the instrument i wanted to play & i remembered liking Duran Duran but specifically their bass players bass lines & sound & if it wasnt for John Taylor i would never have picked up a bass guitar... There were so many musicians who wanted be the next best drummer or lead guitarists only to find they actually loved the bass guitar more & they could still learn other instruments & one who again is regarded as a pioneer & a legendary bass guitarist is Led Zeppelin's bassist John Paul Jones as the bass lines that man came up with like John Taylor are still referred to as classics & John Paul Jones played many instruments while he was with Led Zeppelin... It only seems as if John Taylor is underrated but that couldnt be farther from the truth & many of the 80s & 90s onwards bass players quoted John Taylor as a huge inspiration & why they they then decided to play the bass guitar... The only difference between John Taylor & many other famous bassists is that hes not in your face about it & has always been his own hardest critic... I think the day John Taylor stops pushing himself & constantly keeps taking up the gauntlet of what he can do next will then see him stop playing bass guitar but so far that hasnt happened yet.. Most musicians can be their harshest critics & John Taylor was one such bassist as he was alwsys too harsh on himself as he used fo be were as now hes accepted where he is as a musician but he still believes in putting the work in & pushing himself... Why do you think one of another of greatest of bass plsyers who played with the band " Chic " & also worked on so many other solo acts & bands albums which was the late great Bernard Edwards would go on & bequeath his MusicMan Stingray to John Taylor when he passed away... As Bernard knew another great bassist when he heard one & all the members of Chic became very close friends with the members of Duran Duran & they would goon to work with them in separate projects or help them Produce their next album & Chic's Nile Rodgers has always maintained his love for Duran Duran & when with Chic he likened that to working with his big brothers but with Duran Duran he has been honoured to be allowed to Produce/Play & co-write songs with Duran Duran & he feels like he's being aloud to play in his younger brothers band & this is coming from a man whos written thousands of hit songs & his lead guitar has been called " The Hitmaker " for 50 pmus years... Again i get where your coming from but John Taylor is not underrated & has continually been classed as one of the best bassists along with other such greats & i think your getting mixed up with how Duran Duran were always attacked by the Pop Critics as they constantly hounded them & classed them as nothing more than a couple of pretty boys who pretend they can play there instruments & sing in a band ydt this year Duran Duran have finally be accepted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame & you dont get in their for just being only a bunch if pretty boys & they released their latest album Future Past back in October 2021 & how is still making & releasing studio albums over 40 years after they were first attacked by smsll minded Pop Critics & many have now openly changed their opinion on what they have achieved & though they still may not like their music but they have recognise that they are a brilliant band who are still doing what no one expected them to do & thst was become one of the rare artists that actually made it out of the 80s & went on to become just as succeful were as many in the 80s that were the biggest just withered away & never lasted past the 80s... In light light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....

I LOVE that he mentioned None of the Above. It's been one of my favorites from the first listen. And I still play it constantly. It lifts me up, and I would LOVE to hear it live.

Fantastic interview. Nice to hear John's thoughts on some less-talked-about songs and you did a great job giving him space to talk, whilst giving your own thoughts. Laughing Boy is also one of my faves - the bass really pops on that one, a real song driver.

None of the Above has always been one of my favorite Duran Duran songs but I've never heard anyone from the band talk about it. Thank you for including this track in your conversation. You've created a special moment for me. Now if I can only hear the band talk about the song, Land.

Future Past is such a fantastic album. It's definitely one of my favourites. Always a pleasure to listen to John talk about the band and their work. As another person commented you allow your guest to have the space to speak, which really makes a difference, really well handled John P. Velvet Newton is a cracking song, it gives a real adrenaline rush at the beginning of the live shows. I find Rio makes me feel a little sad..... only because I know it's the closing number and I want the show to go on longer.

I've been a fan since Planet Earth . Duran Duran has managed to make good music since the 80's. Not many bands can do that. I caught them on their first U.S. Tour at the Greek Theater in L.A. , they were practically kids , I was too.

Velvet Newton! Durans front of house sound guy is called Snake Newton. Is it not a nod to him as it’s been the opening tune and gives him time to set the sound before the first tune kicks off?
