Hey Expats and Travelers! Josh from ExpatsEverywhere is here again. An interview with Michael and Melissa from the KZfaq channel Tourabunga is waiting for you. We will discuss what they did when they first arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, and how they dealt with the difficulties they faced. They moved from the US to a not so ideal apartment in Lisbon and had a very difficult first year. Making Portuguese friends and feeling like they lived in a community made a big difference though. Let's see the issues that arose and how they got passed them. ExpatsEverywhere is here to help if you have questions about the life abroad.

I loved this interview and will now check our Tourabounga’s channel! It’s always lovely to hear about the great parts of moving and living abroad, but hearing personal accounts of the difficulties is really useful. It helps you think about things that might not have occurred to you otherwise. Thank you!

You are on the mark there. I had a very bad experience with Atlantico. Called for appointment got a week later appointment to go to bank and there is no poointment in their system. They refused tomopen ac without appointment. Then got another one asked us to be there early morning again same.. and then we waited for hrs and still no appointmnt in system. Then we thought if this bank cordination with call center and bank personel is so bad then better not open ac here. Thank god we did not open ac there. Thank you for sharing this will help many!

Very easy. Portuguese people are extremely welcoming. More than they should really being the rest of the world is not that reciprocal towards Portuguese abroad. Europeans are quite welcoming in general, not just Portuguese. Speaking from my own experience living in the USA and different European countries.

(Not talking about Michael & Melissa) What you folks from the States should do while living in Portugal is to also enjoy some long weekend trips in Europe (Paris, Madrid, Rome,..). Flights can be cheap if booked in advance, but hotels may not. The idea is to see a bit of everyrhing, make the most of your stay in the European continent. Also if you plan on living in Lisbon / Porto, you won't need a car as you can rely on public transportation. That said you should rent a car time to time and go drive around, discover the countryside, beaches, other towns.

We think a vast majority of Americans living abroad realize this. For those that have traveled Europe before moving to Europe, they already know it and it's a leading factor to wanting to live in Europe. - Josh & Kalie

Josh, great interview, v lively, nice, happy-go-lucky people who exactly tell the ups and downs, the joys, their learning experience even if things turn sour or ugly, and be in it immersed with the Portuguese folks, lifestyle, slow it down and take it in strides , that sounds fun, lots of fun & laughter you bet. Loved it. One question, how can we go for, accept a lease without stating we have a pet dog , is it practical, doesn’t it amount to breaking rules, what if caught and facing legal action..
@Tourabunga
@Tourabunga Жыл бұрын
There is a law I believe that landlords cannot discriminate against tenants for having a dog. Everyone has a dog in these places. It's a big effort to take you to court for having a dog. They may simply ask for a deposit or, better yet not care. But they always prefer to rent to non-dog owners so you will run into a lot of no's when confessing upfront in searching for furnished apartments. The things we've been told on our apartment hunt have been ridiculous. Each landlord is different, of course, but in the end, it's all about making money for the landlord and protecting their furnishings/floorings. That's all they seem to be concerned over.

Money solves everything and with these people they have never struggled in their life... All i can think of is the word "smug". I know you met them in person so think otherwise. but it really came off as a privileged couple from CA!! Im a middle class person from AZ and would love to model after people that are more regular!
