Two more excellent products are Kleen King Stainless Steel & Copper Cleaner and Cameo aluminum and stainless steel cleaner. Both are powder. Just dab in a little water with a Q-tip and the carbon comes off like magic. Thanks for sharing this video and sparking the idea to check under the kitchen sink for these two products we've had for years.

Great info. Just got my first stainless gun. Worked hard to get "fire rings" off the front of the cylinder, using Flitz. Remembered being told toulene works like magic, but don't have any in stock, and really hate to use because of fumes. I now see a tub of Mother's in my future instead. Thanks

For my final cleaning I cut a strip of blue shop towel about as wide as the brass brush is wide and wrap around the brush two or three times and using a bore cleaning cable with the brush attached pull this thru the barrel. Wrap enough paper on the brush so there is a fairly snug pull.

Thank you...….at the beginning of the video I thought I saw a Shellback certificate hanging on the wall over your right shoulder. If so, then thank you for your service. I crossed the equator for the first time in 1971 and have a similar certificate also signed by Davey Jones.

I use a "pro-shot lead clean cloth" at every cleaning to keep burn rings to a minimum and the burn marks on the outside of the cylinder just wipes right off. Birchwood Casey also makes one, just DO NOT USE ON BLUED GUNS, it'll probably wipe the blue right off.

I’ve used Mother’s Mag & Wheel Polish for a long time. I polish all my Stainless Steel Guns with it and it don’t take much elbow grease to get great results.....

I discovered Mothers a few months ago. It works better than any product I've tried to get the carbon rings off the cylinder. For getting into tight areas, use an old, soft toothbrush. My stainless steel guns look like nickel after a little Mothers and hand buffing. I would not use it on my blued guns however. A little goes a long way so a jar of Mothers should last for years.

Once upon a time I worked for an agency where the preferred weapon was the Smith & Wesson Model 66. For whatever reason I could not afford a 66, but I was able to buy a used nickel Model 19. Every year we had to re-qualify with our hand guns at the range, and afterwards we would have to clean them before we could return to our station. While strangely everyone was struggling to clean their stainless steel guns I would get done in half the time using silver polish to clean mine. Others would fail inspection, but mine always passed inspection.

Number one thank you for your service as an officer! My dad was a cop for a year but the department He worked for wanted him to do some shady stuff to protect a fellow officer. He had no problem protecting a fellow officer in a situation where the officer's was in danger but this was far from that! Dad's been gone for a long time and I miss him terribly. I'll bet he would have liked you!

Using a polishing compound is similar to using the Birchwood Casey Lead Remover - Polishing Cloth I switched over to using CLR - Calcium, Lime, & Rust Remover. It works great on a SS revolver, but it is very caustic. Don't use it on any guns with bluing or any other type of coating. Don't leave it on for more than 3-5 minutes and make sure to neutralize it afterwards. You can neutralize CLR with an alkaline solution such as water mixed with baking soda.

You want to make this really easy, use a dremel style tool with the wool/felt polishing tip, just polish that mothers right on. Shoot the gun as much as you want, get it super dirty, in the time it took you to do what you did here in this video you'll have a show level finish.

"Mothers" works so well on stainless steel guns I polished two of my stainless guns to a mirror finish. Good thing - it shines like a mirror. Bad thing - lust like putting your fingers on a mirror it leaves fingerprints. Solution - use a microfiber cloth to wipe the gun down and bye bye to fingerprints.

I just purchased a Jericho 941f. It was a trade in from the Israeli police force so it has some etchings I don't want to remove. Would this be safe to use on this pistol without removing the etchings?

Yes, Mothers will definitely remove bluing. I used it to remove the bluing from a new blued stainless .357 Sig barrel to drop into my blued .40 M&P. Looks awesome. Great vid. Never thought to use it on my stainless Ruger. Guess who's going to have a shiny gun tonight?

Awesome! I'll have to pick some of that up. I've been using clp and scotch brite, and it cleans up nice, but takes 45 minutes, and leaves my gun with a bunch of green scotch brite particles on it I have to clean off. Not that big a deal, but still. I also then don't shoot my 629 much because it's such a bear to clean, and have it look good. Too nice not to keep nice, but I didn't buy it to look at it. I'll have to give this a try, and shoot that hog leg without dread of cleaning! Thank you for sharing!

I have a 32 smith and wesson revolver. 2 actually. my grandfather gave them to me and am trying to learn how to clean them.one of them got tiny rust on the barrel

Do not use my method above on a non stainless steel gun it will take the finish off. I really don't know any way to remove rust on a gun with having to reblue it. There is probably a product out there or someone on youtube may know and have a how to video on it.

Q did you use it on the inside of the cylinder and barrel as well. ? And do you think over time you are taking metal off the gun . ? So it will show in time ??? Thanks

I don't use it inside the barrel, but only because I didn't need to. I mainly use it around the face of the cylinder, forcing cone, the underside of the top strap, and the frame under the cylinder. Mostly areas of carbon build up. I wouldn't be afraid of using it inside the cylinders chambers if needed. I have used it on the end of the muzzle around the bore to get the black off. I also use it on the finish of the gun to shine it up.

J-B Non-Embedding Bore Cleaning Compound will also easily remove the burn rings and is specifically meant to be used on firearms, use that instead.

Yes, I always oil metal, inside or out. You don't need much, a few drops here and there wipe away any excess oil off the frame.

DOPetate you don't have to use the stuff this guy is useing. There's a cheaper and easier way. Use ultrabrught toothpaste. It will do just as good. And use just a drop of oil afterwards.

Lol! The big question is why? IF you shoot it...those marks are coming back. A lot of work for no real return unless you're just keeping up a safe queen. That said...yes Mothers is great for shining up the exterior of a SS pistol. Soak a swab in Hoppes 9 let it sit while working on it(same for the cylinders) and then use a .38 brass brush for the barrel and a .45 brass brush for the cylinders to scrub them out a couple of times. Push a couple of patches through and done. Oil it if it's going to sit for an extended period but SS pistols need almost no oil as they're designed to be used dry. Oil is applied not to lubricate, but protect. A couple of drops of oil on a patch is all you need for the entire revolver.

Okay, I was an MP and a Unit Armor in the military. After that I carried a gun on duty for 24 years. I've cleaned them all. Believe me I have no safe queen guns. The only reason I use it is because it works well and cuts my effort and time by more than half. Once you use it the first time it gets easier and faster. I guess my standard are just a little higher than most.

I tend to agree that there's no point in obsessing about the discoloration around the front of the chambers. It does NO harm, nor in any way affects the functionality of the firearm. It's purely cosmetic. Sure, you don't want FOULING to accumulate, but discoloration of the steel is a different thing altogether. At one time, long ago, I fretted over it too. Now, at the age of 54, it doesn't bother me in the least to have the front of my cylinders dark. I typically just wet the area with a little Hoppes and let it soak in as I go about the rest of the gun cleaning, followed by a quick scrub with a bronze brush to remove any fouling buildup from the cylinder face. Done. If you just like it to look like it's never been fired, then fine, polish away. But, it's not necessary at all from a reliability or maintenance standpoint.

But i can use Kroil and a brass brush and do the same? IDK polish is very abrasive, wont it wear your cylinder down though? Also you have to clean every trace of it off, what if you miss traces - it will abrade. I guess it would work tho

Yeah, you are right. I didn’t even realize I said steel. Brass is better. I have used a hammer and chisel to knock off stubborn carbon from the muzzle device on an mp5 before.

Mother's polish contains aluminum oxide, an abrasive. If this gets in between any moving parts it will cause wear. I would never use it.

I’ll take my chances, I’ve be using it for years. Never had a single issue. Plus, moving parts wear even if oiled regularly. The question is, will the gun out last me? The answer is yes, but I’ll let you know if it causes enough wear to cause problems.
