electronicsNmore I tried this exact method, using medium setting cement. It did not work and I made it worse. I applied the cement (which very quickly gummed up when I slid the connector on) and the coupling with the filed out stopper would no longer slide all the way down the pipe after applying cement. Not even using a vicegrip. After removing the coupling I saw more gummed up cement. The cement I used was Harvey multi purpose Twin pack, which included Pipe Cleaner and MP-6 Cement, medium body, medium set. Instructions mention primer. Do I need a 3rd chemical? Is the cleaner also the primer? You made this look super easy.. but it was not at all. I'm not even sure if the one coupling I put on is creating a chemical fuse with the pipe. Why is there so much gummed up cement? You also call the cleaner "glue". I am a laymen, not a plumber. This may seem simple to you, but to people who don't do plumbing.. What is the difference between cleaner/glue/primer?? After I apply the cleaner/glue/primer is there a certain amount of time I should wait to allow it to set in before putting cement over it? Should I have used a thin bodied cement instead of medium bodied? (You did not specify) Is that gumminess of the cement normal? Should it squeeze out into clumps when I slide the connector on? It was brand new off the shelf cement. I see all these great comments about what a great idea this is. I have not seen one single comment about what success they had trying your method. I followed your instructions to the letter and now my water main is worse. Extremely disappointed. Links to your videos but maybe you should specify exactly what products you used, and the viscosity/thickness of the cement. This video seems more suited to journeman plumbers than beginners.

Great idea....I been using it for many years before I saw this. One tip: You can slip one blue primed coupling (without a center stop) on the buried stub end and one primed coupling (without a center stop) on the spliced pipe section you are about to insert between the two sections without having to lift up the buried sections. Then, just apply liberal amount of slow set cement to the pipes on either sides of the two couplings. Slide the couplings back and forth into the desired positions. Using slow set cement makes this is possible and is VERY much easier since and you don't have to strain to bend pipes. This works all the way up to 4" pipes!. Also, place a few clean rags in the ditch after under the splice section you dig it out to avoid getting sand into the couplings. Good post :)

What do you use to file down the ridge (the stop)? Also, even after removing the ridge its very hard to slide the connector back and forth on the pipe. I was doing that without applying the cement. Does the cement act a lubricant?

Gosh. Truly believe me when I say ‘Thank You’. I employed this method today, and was so happy when the meter hand moved a bit & stopped, after waiting the 3 hours for the glue to cure before turning on the water. This was my very first time repairing an exterior pipe. The water company came twice: (1) A group of three of them located the leak and told me to hire a plumber. I then called three plumbers who said they don’t service this area. I live in a beyond-the-suburbs area. After watching two videos, googling the details, and buying the supplies, (2) a representative came to shut the water off at the meter; because I couldn’t figure out how to do it. After he cheered me up, I returned to the h/w store to buy a ‘curb key’ and extra supplies. Many thanks to you for making this very useful and easy to understand video. I feel more qualified, and better equipped, as a home owner.

Very ingenious. I've enjoyed your video immensely. I just had such a breach under my driveway. Then realized I can't slip a 3/4 union coupler in-between the break until I watched your video. Thank you so much. I was going to dig more dirt out as to allow the PVC pipe to flex into the coupler but PVC under enormous weight of dirt will not bend. So your idea is just brilliant. Thank you! I've been fixing pipes in my yard for years but doing an imperfect job. I have one tight spot that I've had to fix multiple times. Two pipes going under a concrete slap on one side and attached to a lateral pipe a few feet away and both have shutoff valves in the center. I just do the best I can with those connectors with the stops and hope for the best. I feel kind of stupid that it did not occur to me to Dremel down the stops. Tomorrow I'm going to fix a leak for a nice elderly woman that I know on Facebook and haven't met in person. I want to do a good job so she doesn't have to pay for a repair later. So I'm researching tonight. Thanks for this lesson. I'm making a list of what I need to take. I think I've got this!

A very simple and effective repair. Thanks! I would add that one should be sure to sand the coupling (and/or the replacement pipe on one end) enough so that it slides easily (!) over the pipes, or the glue can prevent movement of the coupling. And really work fast once the glue is applied.

Thank you so much for this video. We were able to repair a 1 1/4 pvc pipe using this method. My husband had to cut some big tree roots to get to it and to make matters worse, the pipe was right under another pvc pipe which he had to be careful not to break while cutting the broken one. But it’s fixed! Thanks again. You have a new subscriber.

Before anybody tries this make sure to check the psi on your Water meter gauge,if ur pressure is more than 80psi I wouldn't recommend this. I'm sure will hold But for how long.
@davidryan173
@davidryan173 5 жыл бұрын
@@callifam627 It will hold. The glue actually welds the pipe and fitting together chemically. The ridge is just a spacer to insure insertion. 80 psi is well below the burst rating of sch 40 pipe and fittings. otherwise they would'nt sell a slip fitting, which is what he made by filing the ridge off.

If it's irrigation pipe with pressure use 4- 90s instead of 2 couplings. Forcing and altering fittings is not a good idea. 2 90s facing the same way and then a short " make up" and the other two 90s will eliminate forcing anything. Use common sense Drain lines use a "fernco band" with a stainless stress band.

@@electronicsNmore Hey man I tried this and failed with 2 different couplers. I took a dremel and I thoroughly filed away the stopper in the middle, but even without the stopper I couldn't slide it far enough down on one side of the pipe to align them then slide it back. Do some of these couplers have a slightly different thickness in the middle, even without the stopper? Also the cement glue I used was a "medium acting" and it seemed to gum up so quickly I wasn't even sure if it would make a good bond. Please tell me exactly what type of cement you used, and if there is a particular brand or type of coupler I need. I'm about to just pay a plumber to do this. You make it look incredibly simple, and I don't think I'm a dummy but I failed twice now.

Excellent solution, thank you! Tried this today on a 1 inch PVC sprinkler line and it works. I used the round end of a file to remove the stop in the coupler as suggested. Watch the whole video and follow the instructions carefully. Make sure the two ends of the line where the slip coupling will fit are lined up and not touching as you will not have much time to manipulate the lines once the glue is applied.

This worked! Thank you. Here though is my experience which was way bumpier than yours. I was digging in my backyard and I hit a PVC pipe. I shut off the main water to the sprinkler system which was found near the water to the house. I purchased the Oatly handy pack which includes the all-purpose cement and primer. This was the first mistake I made. This video shows him using a cleaner, not a primer which is sticky and ruined one coupling. I was unable to move or slide the coupling as he could. I think the cleaner might allow for movement. Second, he mentions using SLOW drying glue. Well, I went to Ace hardware and I was not able to find anything that says SLOW setting cement. Nothing that says slow, medium or fast setting glue. I called the Oatly customer service number and they said the Heavy Duty PVC glue (green color bottle) is the slowest drying one they make. Once I did this I was able to get it to work but again I did not use primer on the second side of the PVC pipe as I would not be able to move the second coupling like in the video. I didn't have the cleaner product so I had to make do with what I had in hand. The heavy-duty glue and primer on one side and only the heavy-duty glue on the other side.
@janetang01
@janetang01 3 жыл бұрын
i had a similar experience. i was thinking primer everytime he said cleaner. good think i re-listened a 3rd time. the 1st time i did this i failed coz i used a nonstated setting glue so i said, how bad can it be. well it was bad and messy. ruined. Also, i manually sandpapered the coupling, got tired, assumed, ah this is good enough. the combination of fast setting + primer + not sanded enough = fail. now i am doing it again for a 2nd time and i re-listening again to make sure. i think i sanded it enough but i cant be too sure coz when i test it with the pipe, its really tight so i wonder if i should keep sanding it down
