This step by step bread baking tutorial will show you exactly how to make this Old Fashioned Buttermilk Bread in your bread maker machine! Robyn on the Farm's Old Fashion Buttermilk Bread--Bread Machine Recipe
2 lb loaf
1 1/4 c buttermilk or 1 1/4 c milk plus 1 Tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice
1/4 c white sugar
1/4 c melted butter or oil
3 3/4 bread flour or all purpose flour
1.5 tsp salt
1.5 tsp yeast (active dry or instant)
Place ingredients in bread machine pan in order listed. Set to basic white loaf (3 hour cycle). Within the first few minutes of kneading, take a rubber spatula and be sure all of the flour is incorporated into the dough ball. If your dough is too wet it will not look like a ball of dough--add another 1/8 c flour until it is a nice ball of dough. Let bread machine do the rest. I prefer the texture of the crust when I remove the bread right away when the timer goes off. Butter the top of the bread and cover with tea towel while cooling for softest crust. Let cool before slicing for best consistency and crumb. Enjoy your homemade loaf of Old Fashion Buttermilk Bread!

@@RobynOnTheFarm I already had it sitting on my counter and I had all the ingredients. I took the paddle out when I thought it was done kneading but it just tried to knead again…oops. I reshaped it and stuck it back in so I hope I didn’t ruin it. I think it will be OK. I’ll let you know how it turns out. 😊

Whoops! It will hopefully be just fine! I usually just get my bread machine going and get busy and don't pay attention to it once I'm sure the dough looks right, I had it running yesterday and was surprised when it started kneading again well into the cycle myself! So that's something I would have done. I bet it turns out great anyway!

@@RobynOnTheFarm I just had a piece toasted for breakfast and it was very good. It was a little sweet for me (I had it with an egg so maybe alone, with jam, it would be good sweet) I think next time I make it I will only add a tablespoon of sugar. The texture was great!

It is a bit sweet, which is probably why I like it. I’m glad you liked the texture. It is one of the things I like best about this recipe also. I do my buttermilk that way. It works. If you want a real good buttermilk, use whole milk with it. Everything‘s better with buttermilk. That would make really good dinner rolls as well. You could add a little extra sugar and an egg and there you go.

Yes you can use buttermilk powder! It's been years since I've used it, but I think it's about 1/4 cup buttermilk powder to 1 cup of water? So I'd probably use a heaping 1/4 c of powdered buttermilk + 1 1/4 c water since this recipe calls for 1 1/4 c buttermilk. Check the label before you trust my memory on that though!

Did you know that you can make bread flour from all-purpose flour? I just found out a few days ago that if you add 1 teaspoon of vital wheat gluten to one cup of all purpose flour it equals bread flour😃 ALSO… you can keep your buttermilk going just like a sourdough starter. All you need is 2 tablespoons of buttermilk in a jar, like when you get to the end of your bottle or carton, and fill it with whole milk and leave it sit on your counter for 8 to 12 hours. When it starts to thicken up it is ready then you can refrigerate it.😃
