Great video and awesome looking shop. Even though this video is a couple years old, I still wanted to mention this to you. Grounding the PVC piping to the blower is something that you should look into (lots of videos on the subject). It involves running small screws at around 24" intervals through the PVC wall that bottom out with about 1/8" sticking out inside the pipe. You then attach a ground wire by wrapping it around the head of the screw that is then terminated on a housing screw on the blower. This will keep static from building up inside the plastic pipe which could cause a really bad fire if you have enough fine dust built up in the pipe. The flex tubing should be made with a spiral metal support wire that can be used to ground it as well. You may already know all this, but I wanted to throw it out there just in case. I’m new to Woodworking. I have the Dust Right Little Brother the 650. No dust separator. I have a Dewalt Job site saw and a Ryobi Miter saw. I love the PVC pipe idea. Trying to figure out a plan similar to yours for my setup. My plan is to build a Miter saw station and then put my table saw on a mobile cart that slides underneath the station. Trying to figure out the best way to plum everything in is the challenge. Lol 😂

Hi again, and again congratz to you two for doing such a great job together! Ok, first let me say your video gave me a lot to think about. But I have a couple of questions that I hope you can answer. One is ask about the piping! PVC vs the flexible hoses. Now I know that the ridges of the flexhose affect the pressurized suction. But let's just say, I have a very small shop "a bedroom turned into a shop, small shop to be exact", and I have a fair amount of flexible hose, and I want to build my dust collection system. It Would be for about 6 tools, or 6 hoses, 4 tools, and 2 loose hoses for hand tools and clean up. So meaning 6 Blast-Gates. Now here's the first question. If I would cut the flexible hoses, so they would reach each separate connector, to each Y connector "precisely" fairly tight, no bending of the hoses. They would fit pretty much to the exact length. Could it do as good OR close to as good as the PVC "as a some-what substitute" OR even as tight as possible the ridges would still cause a certain amount of loss of suction? And 2nd. My Shop-Vac is a 2 1/2" hose 6.5HP. Now, Should I use 2 1/2" PVC piping all around? Or should I use a widener and use 4" pipping? Should I get better suction with the 4" or it would be the exact same with the 2 1/2"? Please give me your professional opinion! I have 1 shot, so I need to do this right. Looks good, but you should put your blast gates at the Wye. Otherwise when you aren't using the table saw, you still have 30-ish feet of suction going to that blast gate.

I have the same model of dust collector and chip separator. I just a metal 31 gallon trash can instead, with a flat plywood top. I have only tested a couple of times, for shop cleanup. A good bit more of the saw dust make it through to the bag than I expected. I only have a 20’ flexible hose connected, and swept up the sawdust that had covered the floor after being swept up. How much dust has made it through to the plastic bag on your setup. Just a note, they recommend cross member 2x4’s when ousting on a finished wall. great video, thanks. That's the best looking bad system I ever saw... Adding up to what other skilled people had already brought up in the comments below regarding power, bendings and particle size, I want to point out that the cyclone outlet should be centered to suck clean air and that gluing the pipes gives you no chance for inspection.

Nice. I'm going with a Grizzly G0944 since it provides 1250 CFM and a larger 1-micron canister (not the standard 5-micron bag), yet costs about half that of the Rockler. I wish Rockler made a 6" version of the separator kit for a user built garbage can (1:34). I can't seem to find anyone else that supplies one either and may have to rig one with PVC pipe fittings. At the head end next to the separator I want a chip collector like the one you show, but with 6" connections. I plan to use a straight piece of 6" schedule 40 as my main run to two work areas, breaking them out with the included dual 4" to 6" y-adapter and a pair of blast gates, then over to the machines with two 4" flex hoses that I can move to each device.

Incredible project, I love all your videos. One question, did you do grounding for the dust collection ducts? since the static generated by the dust can cause an unwanted fire.

With all that attention to detail you REALLY need to get rid of that 30 micron bag, even with a 5 micron bag the walls near my dust collector would be coated in the really fine dust that blows right back out through the bag and into the air. Just upgraded to a cyclone separator and HEPA filter for long term health. Also look into grounding the pvc pipe if you didn't do so. Fantastic looking shop!

I always like well organised system like yours. Just few things to improve. Use the real cyclone (like Oneida Super Dust Deputy) what captures way more fine dust than the bucket system used now. Your filter stays way longer clean. Don't use that hose reel with high airflow/low pressure system. System you have needs minimum at 4" diameter pipe. Hose reel will suffokate your dust collector. It works best with the shop vac. I hope you didn't mind my tips :)

Glad all this equipment was sponsored and you didn't actually waste money on it because that set up is for show purposes only. For a shop that size, a nominal 1250 cfm unit is way underpowered. Then cripple it further with all those tight 90° elbows and by the time it makes it to the separator, it's probably down to well under 300 cfm which is good for only stirring the dust around the shop which is exactly what will happen when it all gets blown back out through a bag rated for 30 microns (5 microns would be the absolute upper limit to consider if you're serious about protecting your lungs; 1 micron is the goal you should be striving for.) Looks great on video, but I wouldn't depend on it for actual dust control.

How much do you estimate using the weatherstripping in the trash can and around the actual bag is helping with limiting loss of suction? I have a 650cfm system and it feels like my shop vac has more gusto in removing dust to either my router or tablesaw. I did a similar setup as you but to mainly those 2 tools but I did not use weather stripping to get a better seal. I imagine my tool is giving me less than 100cfm. Does the weather stripping improve suction that much?

Well planned wood shop.How much did the dust collection system cost ? Is the four inch piping really required .I think three inch pipes could result in a more efficient system because of the size of your shop. Or am I missing something ?

Very nice set up. I bought the Dust Right 750 mobile dust collector for my small shop. Like you, I chose it for all the compatible components, especially the Quick Change connector. Have you had a chance to measure the air flow anywhere? I would be curious to know how much of a drop you get after the dust separator and at the ends of your long PVC runs. Starting at 1250 cfm, I'm sure you're getting adequate airflow at your tools, I'm just curious how much of an effect the trash can separator had. I bought an anemometer off of Amazon for $35 and used it to test my shop vac set up and then my new Dust Right set up. While I don't exactly get 750 cfm at the inlet of the dust collector, I get sufficient air flow at my table saw (the Ridgid R4512, like yours), which is a far cry from what I was getting with my shop vac and Dustopper set up. I'd like to add a separator, but I'm afraid it my degrade my airflow too much, as I'm starting out at a lower rating than your system, hence my curiosity about your system.

What is the overall size of your workshop?

I couldn’t get enough suction through my hose reel even after I tried connecting it direct to the collector so I ended up running it to a shop vac sitting next to it. I had a remote already from a smaller dust collector so I just use two remotes depending on what I’m using. Going to the shop vac more than doubled the suction on the hose reel. Good looking shop!

What are your thoughts about this?: I have used vacuums that were made to blow air into them and that would create a suction on the inlet. Upon considering this, I was thinking a little about dust collection systems. I have been wondering if it is possible to run the dust collector exhaust into the system so that it basically creates a “closed loop” and does not require a filter. Any thoughts?

You should put a Hepa Cannister filter instead of that bag, you’ll be surprised to see there will be no dust coming out of The dust collector and also the suction power of the dust collector will improve by at least six times more than using the bag filter

That trash can seems very weak. Does it want to implode from the vacuum? If it does you can cut a circle out of plywood that is the diameter of the inside. Place it inside but make sure and drill lots of holes in it to allow the dust to settle.

If you are using a cloth bag, its one of the most unhealthiest thing. Upgrade to canister.

There isn't much explanation here, just description. E.g., why use 4" PVC vs. 3"? 4" = higher volume, but lower speed, so there's a trade-off, but no explanation of your decision.

I don't see any grounding of the PVC in this setup. Air and sawdust flying down plastic piping generates huge quantities of static charge. One spark and this thing is exploding, because anyone who has watched the Mythbusters episode about exploding sawdust knows what's going to happen.

If only PVC pipe came in black.... 😉
