Stainless Steel Band Clamp: amzn.to/2qCf8dV
Copper Gasket Maker: amzn.to/2NUA5st
In this video, I am using a SPEEDWOW 2.0" Butt Joint Exhaust Band Clamp and Permatex 81878 Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker to repair a muffler that fell off of my 2013 Subaru Legacy. This is a common cause of an exhaust leak and can be easily fixed by replacing the exhaust coupler with a band clamp or sleeve type coupler. So far the fix has been very reliable and has made it about 1000 miles with no issues. If you need to fix an exhaust leak, this is a good, easy option. If you need to replace a section of exhaust pipe, you can use these couplers instead of welding the pipes.

Yep, no problem! If it is not too rusty, it is probably at one of the couplers. If not, you should be able to cut out the section that is leaking and couple in a new section. Or in the event that it is just a hole somewhere you could just place the coupler directly over the leak. Good luck, hope it works out easy for you!

This worked for me on the band clamp connecting my h pipe to my over axle pipe on my 13 mustang gt. HOWEVER, the leak came back.... I'm going to repeat the process, but this time I'M GOING TO GO CRAZY ON THE RTV SILICONE. These exhaust leaks are the definition of do it right the first time. This is going to be my 3-4th time fixing this leak.

Wrap it with the exhaust bandage really tight. And then use this band clamp on top of that. It will never leak again I promise

if you over tighten you can bend the pipe if it is weak
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 4 жыл бұрын
That is a good point. My pipe was pretty solid still so it wasn't to too risky. I think as long as the band clamp is sized right, it should bottom out on itself before it would bend the pipe, unless it was getting really thin. Since my one pipe was about 1/16 oversized for the clamp, it needed a pretty good hit from the impact wrench which probably wouldn't be good on a much more rusty pipe...

Nice patch fix. How has that copper gasket maker been working out? Is it still pretty leak free? I’m using these band clamps for a new exhaust system I’m piecing together. Maybe I’m not doing it right but I’m not getting good enough results. I need some kind of gasket maker like you used.

Tried this method and unfortunately the side on the ressinator did not take a 2ID. Kept falling out. I didn't use the rtv. Definitely impossible without it. But I don't want everything to rely on the gasket maker for support . So Going to try a 2 inch Id and 2 inch Od coupler with the rtv Or try to see what it would get Cost to weld it. No turning back now 😂

I used two hose clamps and an aluminum cans I cut up. Still going.
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike Жыл бұрын
Nice! Up in the rust belt I would suspect the aluminum would get eaten quickly through galvanic corrosion on the salty roads. It is dissimilar enough to steel and once you add an electrolyte (salt water) it normally would corrode pretty aggressively.

I didn't notice any smoke with the RTV. It is normally used for exhaust headers which would be a bit hotter and under higher back pressure.

These types of band clamps absolutely suck. The hose clamp styled ones work way better and seal without the use of rtv.

It all depends. If your pipe is pretty new, and you can crank down on it without destroying it, and you have the room, then yes. But if your pipe is older and may crumble itself, then this clamp method is better. It all depends on where the leak is, how much room you have to play with, what other parts are in the way, etc.

and now your band clamp can slip off woohoo! are you an engineer? silicone like that will expand and contract like crazy with that kind of heat and cold and your clamp will never bite into the metal like its supposed to the manufacturer says not to do this for a reason. you need metal on metal that all heats and expands as one piece
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 3 жыл бұрын
The clamp is still in place with no signs of slippage 25k miles later. It's not like it is grease. It is cured silicone rubber with a super high coefficient of friction. Yes I am an engineer and have developed quite a few LSR products that there is a good chance you have used and in doing so means I use a lot of RTV and RTV-2 to prototype. The permatex RTV is designed to work under exhaust manifold pressures and temps which are a whole lot higher than this far back the line so I'm not real worried about it blowing out either.

That is tricky with two different sized pipes like that. This patch job is surprisingly still holding up after however many years ago this video was. In Pennsylvania also. Our salt is so hard on exhaust pipes.
