This video will give you ideas how to prevent leaks between muffler pipe joints and what kind of exhaust clamps you can use for your car's muffler.
U-Bolt type clamp is the cheapest and most popular for automotive exhaust pipes (usually come with shipment if you purchase aftermarket catalytic converter for example) but not always the best. U-bolt clamps can crush the pipe and the bolts can frequently come off due to vibrations from vehicles when driving especially on rough surfaces.
We found that band clamp is the best solution when connecting muffler pipes. They come in various sizes - such as 1 3/4 to 2", 2 3/4 to 3 inch etc - to fit different vehicles such as Honda, Acura, Nissan, Toyota and many more. However, for vehicles such as Prius with very small diameter pipes of 1 1/2 to 1 5/8, how do you fit these band clamps onto these smaller diameter pipes?
The solution is using aluminium foil. That's right, any heavy duty aluminium foil or heating duct duck tape would work. Simply wrap around the connection until its thick enough then install your band clamp securely. Since the bolts are horizontal and not at the bottom, the chances of the bolts coming out loose is a lot less.
Band clamps are the preferred way to clamp exhaust system components together and the ease with which exhaust systems can be taken apart when band clamps are used. Other clamps include butt joint and lap joint.
Exhaust clamps are used with aftermarket exhaust pieces, such as performance mufflers, headers, or other customized components made to enhance the exhaust system. They are used to connect individual pieces or support welds, just like they are used in original equipment manufacturer (OEM) applications.
These clamps are often referred to as V-band clamps, lap band clamps, narrow band clamps, U-clamps, or hanger clamps.
These clamps can be purchased at your local auto parts stores such as AutoZone, Advance Auto, O'Reilly or on the internet such as Amazon.com and Ebay.

To all of you people mocking his use of aluminum foil, sheet aluminum (which is what 'tin foil' is) has been used in exactly this way since before there were cars. Gaskets, shims, all of these things are crushable layers designed to fill into irregularities and create a seal. I'm betting most of you have never actually done a successful repair at all. Certainly the ones advising copper rtv at the header joint are talking right out their ass, as the RTV will not withstand temps above 700F (for brief periods) and my header collectors sit at 750F in normal driving... The primaries are up around 900-1000F. Aluminum foil becomes amorphous and slowly flows into the irregularities at those temps, creating a perfect seal. And someone is about to say 'it should be welded'. You think companies put those gasket joints in there because they like spending extra money? The joints are placed to allow sections of pipes to be installed. If they put a joint there, there is a reason, and replacing it with a weld is frankly moronic. As you go further from the engine temperatures drop, at my Xpipe I can safely use slip fits, RTV and band clamps. I didnt weld my system because slip fir seal and good clamps are superior in terms of being gas tight and also serviceable.

just use the correct size clamp and some exhaust paste/sealant, that aluminium foil should only be used for roasting a turkey at thanksgiving or at Christmas time.....not for fixing an exhaust.

wow "duck tape"?? lol that's not duct tape its aluminum tape. why buy all those sizes of clamps if they don't fit? why not just use the u clamp but use an impact gun the bolts should not loosen if you clamp it right and if it leaks a bit just use a second clamp I've never seen that not work unless someone faces the bolts down lol(gravity people) plus that way you don't have a bunch of glue and tin that will burn off smell and maybe leak over time. but vary smart for a few month temporary fix if your strapped for cash and have a lap or but joint clamp laying around

It's actually a "duct tape" not duck tape. It's the aluminium foil tape used for HVAC system (Heating Venting Air Conditioning) -- hot & cold air ducts or metal repair (links to buy below). Good suggestion on the 2nd clamp, we didn't about that. We did used an impact driver but during the winter here in New England, lots & lots of pot holes especially in New Haven where they didn't care to patch the holes, the vibrations are very bad. There was a bad smell of glue for the first hour but it went away. Here's the link to the aluminium foil tape (could also buy from hardware store such as Lowes or Home Depot): www.amazon.com/Hxtape-inch-66ft-Aluminum-Choices-Patching/dp/B07D58TGL5/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=8TTKOG4DKTY9&keywords=heating+and+cooling+duct+tape&qid=1569277081&sprefix=duct-tape+heating+%2Caps%2C179&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyWUFOWldPTUhSR1dZJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzcwNTE3R0lHNVpENk9YN0VSJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwNTM1MzlaVUhZTVRNTlFGMVomd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl
