Learn how to trust your gut and your brain instead of rules when drawing backgrounds and environments. It will help make your illustrations more organic.
These are the two books I recommend for perspective in comics.
Vanishing Point - This one is a little easier to read and applies all knowledge towards comics.
amzn.to/3ln38W6
Complete Guide - This one is very technical and advanced. It's not something you'd want to read, more skim to know what is possible. It's a great reference book on how to correctly figure out size, complex and irregular shapes, and just saving your brain when it comes to hard perspective.
amzn.to/3f1TjMf
Here's my video with the complex technique for figuring out size.
• How to use Perspective...
I got nothing against learning all the rules and methods of perspective. I've learned them, they are super helpful to know. Knowing them will allow you to dig yourself out of a hole when your drawing looks like poo.
But I hardly ever use those techniques in my day-to-day drawing. Granted I have a more loose, whatever style, but I think this can still be applied to more technical "crafticians", at least in the early stages of their drawings.

Another great vid, Walter! In terms of stuff I would like to see explored regarding perspective, I think you made a vid once where you talked about shifting the perspective in a panel as you scrolled down it, since that's something that's more likely to be possible/necessary in Webtoon. I would love to hear you revisit that again and talk about changing your perspective/camera angle as you transition through a long shot and how to do it so it feels right. Keep up the awesome series!

Another tip I've learned about scaling with perspective and horizon lines is that if an element intersects with the horizon line, that element will always be on the horizon line no matter how far or close that thing is from the "camera". If we use Walter's example with the guy in the office, his eyes should always be intersecting with the horizon line if we drew him further into the background or closer to the foreground, assuming that the we did NOT move the horizon line.

On the beginning of the video i was like: Mention your backround in this video, go ! And then you actually did!!:) Through I actually know perspektive (at least in the very most times) I totally enjoyed and agreed here. If I get lost in perspective its: when a room is overly complicated and when i do etablishing shots from above (more than one vanishing point, ya know) Also I´m somewhat lazy and do vertical lines often without a ruler ( digital and analog) because I somehow think/feel I they are 90° but Im often kinda wrong :D.
@walterostlie

Same. I get less and less picky with perspective the more I draw. If it looks like a room and looks like people are standing on the floor, it's good enough for me :-)

Geez man, this was super super helpful; I love all your tutorials. You make it so easy. I have 2 questions though: 1. When you're drawing buildings and such, how do you use perspective to add the character so they look like they're in the scene? Do you go by the height of the doors and/or windows? 2. For Patreon, does the 2nd level offer suggestions and/or reviews on comic work? It says you will critique artwork and portfolio; would you consider comic pages (not all of them) too?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can take a look at comic pages also. I consider that portfolio stuff. Prolly no more than 10 pages and focused on art and storytelling. So with drawing characters in scenes, of course you want to do what works best for you. For me, I like to draw the characters in the poses, compositions, and camera angle I want, then I plan the background around them, using the character's height to figure out the size of doors, windows, etc. The background is usually secondary to the characters for me. Unless it's an establishing shot and the environment is the star of the panel.
@Sammy_47
@Sammy_47 3 жыл бұрын
@@walterostlie I think an establishing shot is what I'm trying to explain; since I'm new to this (my focus has always been telling the story), I don't have that many establishing shots. I also draw the character first then the environment depending on the scene; it's easier for me that way. However, sometimes when I do that the scene doesn't look right; the background looks weird, but it's difficult to explain without visuals 🙂

Amazing video as always, I never miss one of your videos. I really appreciate you sharing your tips to us. I been working on my comic and I have in mind everything you told us. I have one little problem. My lines looks too pixelated, I had try everything to fix it, the resolution the anti-lasing, the size of brush, ect, I'm using the size you recommend, so I was wondering if you can give me a little tip of this? I have an iPad Pro so maybe it's just the quality of it hahah,I'm sorry to bother you with this, And thanks for everything.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
Are you using the 800px wide? I think that is what I said because that is the minimum you need for webtoon. So here's the trick and it may be a little confusing. Your ipad may have a resolution of 2000px wide, so your canvas size of 800px wide will only take up less than half of the screen. 800px canvas across a 2000px screen. If your canvas was 2000px, it would take up your entire screen. Make sense? Okay, so if you zoom in on your 800px canvas, you are actually over-zooming pass 100%. If you zoom in on your 800px canvas until it filled up your screen, you'd actually be over 200% zoom. That is going to look pixelated. Anytime you zoom in over 100% it will look pixelated, regardless of canvas size. However, if you work at 800px, you don't have to zoom in, because you are working at the resolution that readers will see. However, I know it is just natural to want to "zoom in" when you're drawing. You just don't need to. However, if you'd rather be able to zoom in, use a larger canvas size like 2000px wide. Hope that made sense.

I wanted to ask, I feel confident in sketching the anatomy of my characters in traditional art but I find it really hard to draw anatomy on digital art. Is there a way to this😐?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
Drawing digitally takes a little getting used to. The difference in drawing surface texture is a little weird, digital devices tend to be slicker than traditional paper. There are some screen protectors or different pen tips that can help mimic the friction of paper. Also you may just need to find the right pen/pencil brush setting for your digital setup. Try different opacity and brush sizes, try messing around with pressure sensitivity to try to mimic what you're used to in the real world. I scanned my traditional artwork, or you can take a picture, then I started drawing test digital lines next to my traditional lines, I kept messing with brush settings until I was able to closely match my traditional lines.

Im not sure If @Walter Ostlie solve the Problem (of course it everything right he say) but what I observed: If I sketch my figure digitally i zoom out. When I start do my final sketch/ PencilInk I tend to zoom in (to get better lines, adding details and features etc) but here I get a bit "lost in proportion" since I can`t see the whole figure. Is this maybe your case too? If it is like this- I haven`t found a real way to fix. Maybe a bigger sceentablet might solve this problem(but who can affort?) For me(just for me) the easiest way to solve is to draw on paper a better sketch and just scan (or taking a picture with the cell) the sketch to ink it. (if it is another Problem, just ignore my babbling;)
@arteva309
@arteva309 3 жыл бұрын
Nique Oelkers yes! That's totally my case as, I draw on an old version tablet and with my finger because I can't really afford a new one or a stylus at the moment. I too think that tracing the sketches from traditional art is a way. I hope there can be more ways too.

I think what I have the most trouble with when it comes to laying out panels is the scale of objects, buildings, and characters compared to one another. My characters are all supposed to be a certain height, but it's difficult to transfer that into every scene. Sometimes the scale feels really off. Is there a trick to help with this?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
You sorta have to pick an element to be the "Truth" for a particular panel. Maybe the main character in the panel, and base everything off that one character. draw lines from the top of that characters head to other points in the panel and that will be the character's height translated. I'll try to do a video about it soon.

Treat yourself to some ice cream? You can always turn it into a book and run a kickstarter to raise money to print it. Then you can go to convention or sell them online. You can also find an agent or manager to try to sell your story to someone for movies/tv/etc. And then you start another webtoon if you had fun with the first one and want to do it again.
