My mother was born in 1923 and she just put enough water to cover the potatoes. She never poured water off because you poured off the goodness and she always added a little thickening, which was flour. And of course butter and salt and pepper.

I think potato soup would have some sort of cream or milk in it as well. If this works for you, then have at it. Thank you so much for watching! 😊

Until they get tender in the middle. If you an cut through a large potato dice with a fork, then you're good to go.

This is supposed to have cornstarch added to thicken the juice into a gravy-like thing. You just made boiled potatoes.

Hi, You don't need corn starch to thicken the juice. All you need to do is mash up some of the potatoes in the water. Bam! You have stewed potatoes. Thanks for watching!

I am a northerner, and a friend of mine told me her mom made stewed potatoes. I came to KZfaq to find out what that was. How do you eat them? With the water/butter “juice”, or do you serve with a slotted spoon? Then that would defeat the purpose of saving water in the pot, right?

You eat the stewed potatoes with the water and juice. That’s what makes them stewed potatoes. I hope you enjoy! 😘

My grandmother used to add something to her stewed potatoes to thicken them, but I don't know what it was. I wish I knew because her potatoes were really good!

@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics It might have been a slurry of flour and milk stirred into the potatoes. I'm going to try that one day to see if it's the flavor I remember. Thank you for the video as it has refreshed my memory of stewed potatoes that I haven't eaten in years!

@@tennesseegrands6620 It could also have been corn starch. I prefer using corn starch as it doesn't give the "raw flour" taste, which to avoid that the mixture has to cook a relatively much longer time.

Any type of potato you want to use is fine. I've probably watched most of the videos on YT and they usually mention that it's your choice. Also, most people thicken with either flour, cornstarch, or cornmeal (yes, even cornmeal). You may also add any seasonings you want to add. Some recipes include onions, too.
