Mr. Dindial Sikumar has been involved in agriculture for over 44 years as a student, teacher and farmer. On just one acre of land he supplies over 20 restaurants as well as the top supermarket chains in Trinidad & Tobago with herbs like basil, thyme, mint, tarragon and rosemary to name a few.
As an advocate for economic diversification through agriculture, Mr. Skiumar believes now is the time to focus on our agriculture industry.
The adverse effects of Coronavirus on the economy and the challenges we are facing with food security as a country and in the wider region are indicators that we need to have a plan going forward where farmers and other key figures in our agricultural industry play an important role in how we deal with the fallout from Covid 19.
This was a very impromptu visit so we are grateful to Mr. Sikumar for his hospitality and agreeing to speak to us on camera on such short notice.

Best seasoning in the country. Quality goods. As a market vendor, who buys from him, very peaceful, kind, caring, loving person who cares for any and everyone! To this day, you enter through his field, you see and smell the quality seasonings. Truly amazing every time I go. Godbless.

I hardly buy imported food, love supporting local agriculture. It gives us the nutrition for our climate and helps build the immunity we need. He is absolutely right about education. The MOE saw it fit to eliminate Agriculture in schools and some schools do everything else but show children how to nurture and value nature. I remember asking preschool kids about local fruits and they said grapes and apples. Sad... My toddler eats mainly local foods like watercress, microgreens, Moruga brown rice, caraille, avicado, coconut oil etc. sapodilla and other local fruits. We need to educate parents AND children through our communities and teachers need to take thr initiative outside of what the curriculum sets forth to help create healthier brains and bodies. You are what you eat!

Well said. I remembered Agriculture’s classes.my parents grew rice and most veggies and fruits. And I inherited my mom love for gardening. My mother will dug a hole and made out the plant in and she would say this is yours to care for. As a child its encouraging to think you have to care for this plant that will eventually grow and have fruits. It gives a child responsibility to care and to see a plant grow.

People, we have enough rain fall in trinidad and tobago to do water harvesting and stop relying on wasa for a hook up. In addition, to keep water temperature stable, you can sink the tanks partial in the ground.

Please tell Trinidad ***(GOVERNMENT)***, that Trinidad should be able GROW its OWN FOOD. Trinidad has a Naturally Hot climate to GROW it's own FOOD, and not have to Depend on getting Food from OUTSIDE sources! This will make Trinidad, MORE INDEPENDENT!

Very good idea. I admire your enthusiasm,however on my stay in T&T during the pandemic lockdown Iwas unable to obtain seeds for home gardening.The plants seedlings at the garden shops were fragile expensive and broken by the time you got home.I had to look abroad or beg around for seeds or plants.When will my people learn.

My only question. Do you get a lot of snakes in the farms like this in the country? How do you handle that? This would be my problem. I hate snakes and lizards. I agree with you. As a child, there were different trees bearing fruit in our yard. After we rebuilt a much larger house and had to cut all the trees down with very little yard left, we had bananas, tomatoes and cassava. I still have a little herb garden and tomatoes on the rooftop in my building during the summer. I have noticed that Jamaicans are more into farming than Trinidad. You better write the government if you need land. I doubt they will give you all that land. You have to share with 9 others.

Lizernie Millet using my Daughter's account. I will like to get some information about growing tomatoes, lettuce, sorrel, rosemary, chive, fine thyme, spanish thyme and maybe carrots and cabbage to in my back yard. I am a single Mum always interested in doing this and will appreciate any advice to start this venture of agriculture. This will be a fun adventure for me. Thanking you so much to see this video.

@@lenzomaru I often wonder why "organic" which is the natural way, is more expensive. Eg. Brown rice (natural statr) vs white rice, yet still we have to pay almost 3 times more for brown rice. Hydroponics has allowed for more organic vegetables. Does it really cost more or is it the market that determines it should based on demand being less? I would love to know!
