To anyone wondering eventhough it looks nasty but it actually doesn't even taste aged like you would in many aged/fermented food, the egg white part just taste more earthy and more firmer/jelly texture while the yolk taste more earthy and creamier. Its actually really good, especially with rice porridge. Its one of my favourite thing to eat since young.

I still can't believe people are losing their minds over this. I'm not even Chinese but I've tried it and it's absolutely delicious. I don't have it all the time, as you can't really find it here too often, but I have indeed tried it. One word of advice: don't expect a strong egg taste. Like how different cheeses taste different (seeing as though that's what most people are comparing this to), a century egg is different from a normal egg in taste but is still an egg with a more mild egg taste.

This is what I love about culture. Letting others enjoy, and appreciate it as well. The old man welcoming foreigners to eat them shows that it’s something that he enjoys making, and truly passionate about. If everyone was this welcoming with their culture, than it it would be a warmer world to live in.

I tried one when I was younger and I thought it was delicious, there was something about the texture that made it feel like it was melting in my mouth. I ate it with Congee though because it was so rich in flavour.

As a Chinese person, I have no idea why this is called the "Century egg" or the "100-year old egg." In Chinese, this is called a “皮蛋” which is literally the "skin egg." And they are not specific for special occasions (mostly). If you find this dish interesting, I recommend the dish 皮蛋瘦肉粥 (congee with pork and century egg). China's KFC actually has this on its breakfast menu, and it is wonderful.

ok IN ALL HONESTY, it's actually really good ngl!! y'all should take a bite. i mean it's in tasty chinese porridges all the time anyway.. here they call it "pitan" and tbh it usually just comes w my porridge when i order it and i actually really like it even before knowing this. yeah sure not to be a hypocrite i prolly wouldnt order it based on description/look alone by myself back then, but since i already know how it taste like now i genuinely specifically ask these eggs to be included in my porridges always✌🏼

When I was a lad I ate 4 dozen eggs every morning to help me get large, and now that I'm grown I eat 5 dozen eggs and I'm roughly the size of a barge

For those who are curious about the taste. It really is not offence or funky in flavour at all. It has a gel like texture for the egg white, very little flavour. The yolk is creamy and tastes a bit like some french cheeses like Camembert. It has a very slight ammonia smell, which for me is the thing I like least about it. But overall it is delicious, goes well with vegetables and best in congee. Asia has far weirder tasting food than this, trust me it’s just the thought of it. If you get a chance please give it a try with an open mind. I’ve discovered some great food since living in Asia. Food that seems weird in the west, but it is actually delicious. Some of my favourites are are chicken or duck heart, gizzard (part of duck or chicken stomach), and intestines (this is slightly more acquired taste). Also Durian is fantastic. But most people can’t handle it, even some Asians. Ive tried stinky tofu (Taiwanese delicacy), but I cannot take it at all. The smell is just too much for me. I’ve tried Balut (duck embryo form Philippines/Vietnam), this is amazing I cannot tell you how good. But the thought of it is revolting to almost everyone. What weird, but wonderful foods have you tried? I hope some day I can give it a go.

for those who want to know the taste, it have a metal taste with earthy smell(urine), creamy egg yolk and jelly like egg white(and the after taste is really strong and last a long period of time). Even though i try it when i was 10, it takes me another 10 year to like it. btw it doesn't taste salty and that the people mentioned salty egg is another dish which a lot easier to accept to the others.

I once sat in a resturant in Hong Kong and ordered something random from the menu, and lo, there was a century egg on my plate. At that time, I didn't know the "horror stories" behind it, so I gladly tried it. The fact is that it tastes really good, the yolk tastes like butter mixed with hazelnut and the "white" that has turned into jellified cola tastes almost nothing. These eggs are actually good, grouped together with cold cuts and other h'orderves, goes really well with strong spirits. Serve them chilled though if you're put off by ammonia smells.
