My practice is as follows: when fear, anxiety come into my mind, I welcome them with all my heart and hospitality. I seat them at my dining table and treat them with all the goodies that I have and when they are satiate ask them what more they want. And generally they apologize to me, thank me and leave me with a smile.

Self-sabotage is the ego's way of keeping us small, safe, and separate. It is the manifestation of the illusion of lack and limitation, a sign that we have not yet fully awakened to our true nature. But the truth of nonduality and oneness reminds us that we are not separate from the divine, and that we are worthy and capable of achieving our goals. When we tap into this truth and let go of the ego's doubts and limitations, we open ourselves up to infinite possibilities. We are the masters of our own destiny, the architects of our own paradise. We are the dreamers, stepping out of the nightmare and into the light. So next time you find yourself self-sabotaging, remember that you are not your ego, but rather a unique expression of the divine. You are worthy and capable of achieving your goals, and it is through embracing this truth that you can break free from self-sabotage and awaken to your full potential. The universe is waiting for you to shine brightly, to let your light ignite the world 👁️

I started reading New Earth and the Power of Now back in 2008. The wisdom in those 2 books resonated with my soul so..... much that I decided to read them both over and over again until my subconscious mind was altered and the dysfunctional environmental programming that I received, between birth and my 8th birthday, from unconscious adults was replaced. Like any new skill you want to learn, becoming a keen observer of myself, becoming the master of my thoughts or monkey mind and changing my beliefs with this wisdom took continuous practice. It's challenging but you can do it, don't give up and remember, you are not your mind or thoughts! If you are depressed you're thinking about and dwelling in the past. If you are anxious you're thinking about the future. If you practice every millisecond and consistently stay in the present moment you are in the NOW, this is ENLIGHTMENT! You no longer have to chase enlightenment because it only exists in your present now. You evolve your soul from the present moment NOW. Uplift others, love others and be the best version of yourself every day. Imagine what our planet would be like if this were the goal of every human being on a daily basis? It would be a "new earth" full of peace, joy and love. I'm excited for the TIPPING POINT, when this is a reality for every human being on Earth. You are loved beyond measure, I love you!

I used a version of this to quit smoking in 2001. I was a heavy smoker, too. But when I was finally ready to really quit, I decided to just start saying, “Thank you, craving, for giving me another opportunity to prove to myself that I am way more powerful than you are.” After the first day of being able to stand up to it for first minutes, and then hours, I was able to really know that there was zero value in blowing up my progress by letting my craving have its way with me, ever. And now it’s been almost 23 years since I smoked my last cigarette. It wasn’t nearly as easy as I’ve made it sound here, but it was definitely worth the diligence and perseverance that were necessary to my success. Staying awake to and aware of my thoughts was the most important part.

I'm sober from alcoholism for a long time. There is nothing like the compulsive urge to pick up a drink. It's like a 100 ton truck driving through the brain! Comes fast and furious, even in aware and semi-conscious people. That's why daily presence meditation has to be practised by alcoholics.

Dear Eckhart, firstly I thank you really so much. The book of yours - The Power of Now - has really saved me at times. But today, when I was listening about self- sabotage - I just realized that it is not a gremlin or so what is trapped inside me. It is beautiful me, my real - self. Who is asking to be seen. To be care of. I called her - My Fair Lady. Because I used to be all of that. Beautiful, fair, loving ,kind. And then that beautiful self got scared, got disappointed, got distracted and got in totally wrong shoes. And I just really hope - it is not too late - to get back - what belongs to me - it is my beautiful self ❤❤❤.

Losing my beautiful mother, going through the experience from her decline to end of days and death has now come back to haunt me, during the process I was present and almost felt like it wasn't me but spirit that was doing it all, or should I say, wasn't ego but the presence of my true self. Now weeks after her ferwel ceremony (burial) I have been lost in my egoic self, suffering immensely! I have listen to you Ekart for Years, many many many years and while I thought I was spiritual and felt grounded in presence, it was so quick and easily lost!!! Incredible explanation! For those interested in relating this to western psychology / cognitive science, what he is describing is the process of raising **conscious awareness** of unconscious habits and how that ends up reprogramming unconscious behavior (ie “behavioral health”). Psychic imbalance occurs when those “gremlins” or “frogs” are actually CHILDHOOD PERSONAS (this is the formation of the “Shadow” in Jungian psychology) that have been stuffed down due to painful negative associations. Eventually they get stuffed so far down that they are ignored by the conscious “Ego”, but your brain is so interconnected neuronally that you cannot “delete” the full memory. So it remains embedded in the unconscious, manifesting as unexplained compulsions or emotional outbursts that frustrate you and can’t be controlled when your lizard brain “fight or flight” response becomes activated (anxiety, stress, fear, etc). This practice he describes is “mindfulness” and this eastern philosophy idea has been adopted by western behavioral therapists BECAUSE IT WORKS. Simply raising conscious awareness of the unconscious habit begins to “reprogram” your brain and make the negative “Persona” less scary, so you are less compelled to try and react in fear and try to shove it down. The long term “cure” is when you finally connect the deeply buried Persona to the actual painful childhood experiences which caused it to be buried in the first place. Once you find those, sit with them and process the pain, your psyche starts to heal and regain emotional balance (embrace the Yin and Yang!). But that’s a multi year process for most, so just starting with this simple mindfulness exercise he describes will be a huge head start! :)

As a psychology student myself I learned a lot by reading your comment. I did an Akashic Field meditation once and I asked my mentors why I kept relapsing in my addictions over and over, and how to get over them, and one of the main symbols I saw was the snake, one of my closest mentors told me: Embrace your snake, learn how to deal with her, love her. Reading your comment I can see how the snake can be a symbol for the Kundalini Awakening, as well as my addictions coming from coping mechanisms for stressful events I may have lived in childhood, seeking mood booster behaviour to balance the negative energy that got pushed down (shadow) The límbic emotional brain is the one who protects us from threats, responsible for the self-sabotaging process, when in reality is self-protection. We need to go see the monster ourselves, meet out shadow or whatever we are protecting ourselves from, and feel it, fully process it, and integrate it, so we can be whole and find ourselves once again :)

I don't know if this will help anyone else or not but I was really right on the edge of having a serious addiction problem and the way I got away from it was as soon as the pleasure thought entered my mind I would automatically switch my thoughts to all the negative aspects of using it. I would not allow myself to think of the pleasurable part of the experiences. It took a while but the pleasure thoughts quit popping into my mind which meant the thought off the substance stop popping into my mind.

It’s funny to me how others think We can see through excuses! It’s up to you! It’s always a temporary thing It’s not a solution or fix It’s more like trying, more like making yourself right-When you already are, it’s like saying look “I’m giving an effort”!!! self observation of your thoughts AND feelings is key. The impulse is often a 'feeling' (or at least a thought accompanied by a feeling) and to help yourself observe that feeling it can be a good idea to describe it to yourself. Ask yourself where in the body is it located. What are its characteristics? Does it feel hot, cold, sharp, nagging etc? Does it have a colour? These are all things that helped me.

I like the concept of using each circumstance as an opportunity for my (your) personal spiritual practice. The rewarding experience could be unending, always available and arising. And the energy of self sabotage thoughts weaken and dissolves over time. Yes! Replace that disappearing energy with positive energy 😊

This is the second time I go through it. His book “the power of now”, along with proper medication has helped me tone down the depressive voice that keeps me in the past and future; tormenting me. I just do the opposite of the depressive voice.

My addiction started at 4. From neglect and being alone I replaced affection, touch, love and hope with dopamine spikes. That young, my mind was wired to do that instead of living. So 38 years now I am still alone. I dont believe it controls me now but the guilt and shame does. And thats too much for people to handle, so they leave. Always. Just recently lost a friend by not considering their feelings, instead desperately reaching for a hand to pull me out of the black. So close..but now I am stuck beyond reach.

I’m having issues with self sabotaging in regards to binge eating. I’m in relatively good shape, but I have a perfectionist mentality that is being driven from my egoic mind. I am able to keep it at bay for the most part, but when I feel stressed or let down by myself, I feel this primal urge to splurge on food and discontinue my workouts, sabotaging my progress and efforts and getting caught up in the proverbial hamster wheel. It has been a great struggle for me. The last couple of times that it has occurred, I have attempted to sit with it more and delay the urge. But the urges come back in full force. It feels so primal that logic can’t seem to stop it. I’m hoping by cultivating more presence I can overcome this obstacle. Any additional wisdom or knowledge would be welcome. Bless you all.

What I’ve found is that it takes time. As you’re no doubt aware it’s like a muscle that needs to be strengthened. When you experience the urges and uncomfortable feeling I have found that if I go for a walk or work out, eat a healthy piece of food or have a drink of sparkling water that the urge dissipates. I think the trick is to seek a low state of healthy dopamine.

Love this man, but even delaying, and deep observation take willpower. Willpower may be limited, but with the right motivation and clarity that usually needs to be examined outside of the urge process, and the willingness to tolerate the urges for periods of time while they reach therapy can then reside is quite effective. That’s how I slowly lost around 40 pounds 10 years ago. It took a while, but I was eating sanely so much more of the time that I was reinforced to keep going. It just became clear that the pain of being compelled by food was greater than whatever I had to experience to not give in.

That’s so relatable, , , the negative pattern / program actually runs in the mind before you catch yourself physically engaging in the pattern. Alcohol, Food etc, we run the program in the mind first and then the physical body follows what the mind has already been engaged on doing , , , , It’s so true - so relatable.
