Seriously, great interview. Just when you thought it couldn't get more real... it gets more real. As a kid of an immigrant, an outsider within, a hip hop loving, book reading, truth seeking American, I can relate to so much this man says. Tell it.

this might be my favorite interview so far from vice. i wish i was as proud and connected with my heritage as eddie is. just now realizing how much ive tried to remove myself from my roots and think of myself as a raceless, generic person, even when i cant escape the fact that people will always view me as just an asian person. ive grown up trying to be white. its time to "choose" to own my roots and embrace them.

Holy shit some real scary hate on some of these comments. Eddie is the realest. definitely looking forward to seeing more stuff from him

I thought Eddie was just another Asian pretender trying to put a thick New York accent to compensate for a lack of identity. But the more I listen to him, I see that he is a proud Asian, and is very passionate about trying to advocate for Asian Americans.

How is it "keeping it real" that a highly educated Chinese American lawyer raised in a prosperous upper middle class family has appropriated the language, clothing, and mannerisms of urban African-Americans? I guess people can agree to disagree that this cultural appropriation is cool or lame, but I don't see how anybody can claim its in any sense "real." Its the opposite of real.
@timkoen4557
@timkoen4557 8 жыл бұрын
according to your logic you can't "keep it real" when being educated? Sounds a little strange to me +makanmata
@makanmata
@makanmata 8 жыл бұрын
***** You can keep it real by being educated and acting as if you are educated. But being educated and privileged, and appropriating -- and caricaturing -- others by pretending to speak non-conventional english, and aping their dress, mannerisms, etc., is not in any sense "real." It is fake. It is the very definition of acting.

+makanmata looool dude you're so lost. Stop categorising human beings. Just cause he did x he has to act like y? Lol it's 2016 bro. Widen your perspective. People today are whoever they want to be.
@makanmata
@makanmata 8 жыл бұрын
Huang can be whatever he wants to be. Just don't tell me its "real" and not caricaturing other human beings with his act. He's free to do it, just don't try and tell me its cool. Huang is pretty quick to criticize and lecture others about their behavior, and I don't see anything wrong with pointing out that he's a boorish and vulgar hypocrite.

As a first generation Chinese American, my dad placed importance in exposing me to Chinese culture. I've gone to China several times, but the last time I went (last summer) I experienced the same shock as Eddie. I don't know how I didn't realize it as a kid, but I just fully realized that we, Asians, were the majority! I'm not the weird "chinoto" there!
