Edge to Edge Quilting Using The Embroidery Module

I am using an 80/12 Organ needle, 40 weight thread on top and 60 weight thread in my bobbin and I am using the yellow high tension bobbin case....video is on the B770QEE...
I most often do edge to edge in rows rather than columns but the book teaches columns so try both and see what feels more comfortable to you...
I use medium weight sew in interfacing to make my templates but as in the video I have used true grid and like it a lot too...

while I did not talk about the snap hoop in the video, I do use them and especially on edge to edge quilting... the hooping goes much easier and faster and you don’t have to continually get up from the machine....the investment is well worth it and snap hoops come in all sizes, but you must be sure you get the ones designed for the Bernina machines...

I just pulled out my embroidery unit for my BERNINA 770qe, since I just purchased the upgrade and have never used the unit. After watching your video, I can't wait to use it. I’m glad I stumbled on this video. Best I’ve seen as to getting started and doing rows as instructed. I’ll go out on a limb and say Aimilee Scott has joined with DIME and recommendations their magnetic hoop. I purchased the comparable hoop for my B790. Much cheaper.

Thank you for your insight and skill in edge to edge quilting. I, too, have a Berninia 770 QQE and was wondering if I could edge to edge quilt without the pin point placement feature. Can't wait to try this method on a pillow top, first.

You can do it....although the 770 does not have pin point placement it does have a feature called virtual positioning and absolute check...I use this all the time in edge to edge quilting...❤️

This is my first time to your channel. I do not have a Bernini machine but have a Brother Dream Machine. I have done a little bit of quilting using an embroidery pattern. I made a template to use to get perfect placement on the quilt. I did not stitch out an A and a B template. Can you explain the purpose of using an A and B template? I just used the same template for the entire quilt. I did start at the top left and went across the top of the quilt from left to right. Then moved down to the next row and went across in the same manner as in the first row using just one template. Thank you for such a great video. I love that you didn’t cut out the part where the template got torn and you showed how to repair it quickly. Such a real moment that can happen at any time and it nice to know how to take care of such issues and not panic and think you have to start all over again! I also appreciate how you took the time in the video to show how you are able to line up the end point from the previous hooping, perfectly to the beginning point of the next hooping by moving the needle up or down, left or right to get an exact match. Thank you for taking the time to do that! My machine has many of the same features and I learned so many little things that will help make my experience less scary and less stressful! Once you spend all that time and expense of making a quilt, it is definitely stressful to think about how quickly things can go awry and you have ruined your quilt. Thank you for a great tutorial!

@@FiddlestixAndStitches Thank you for your response! And thank you for your kind words….. AND No, my final product was not perfect by any means, but it is just a wall hanging and who it going to look that close at the quilting except for me? I do have a couple of questions…..are the two templates that you stitched out -- the A and B. Are they identical to each other? I’m sure there must be a reason to make two but am not sure why unless it is just something that you do. I can understand that if that is the way you learned. Also, I have a question about what to do when you don’t have a full-sized template amount left on the quilt when you get to the edges of your quilt - can happen even on all sides. Someone else asked…..do you stop the machine when you reach the edge of your quilt? I have tried taping scraps of fabric to the side allowing the pattern to sew out the design completely but off my quilt, then trimming those off once the quilt is all quilted. Is there a better way because that was not a great way to deal with that? I was considering stopping the machine and skipping ahead in the design (using the plus 10 stitches on the screen of my machine) until the pattern is back on the edge of the quilt again? Will that work? I haven’t tried it but have considered trying to see if it works. Do you know or have you tried that? I appreciated those methods that you addressed in the video, but I am not wanting to hand quilt additional stitches or even free motion quilt to the edge……both my hand stitching and free motion quilting skills are atrocious which is why this process is such a great way for me to finish my quilts and not send them off. I know everyone tells me, practice, practice…..I have and see almost no improvement with more and more quilts piling up waiting for me to get “practiced up” enough. I was thrilled at this way of using my embroidery machine to do a job I have not been able to master. In fact when I purchased my embroidery machine I was hoping to be able to figure out how to use it for quilting. Thanks for your help!

The tamplates I use for that, is the print from the embroidery program, so I can position them properly .

Would like to know when you put your hoop with stabilizer in it to sew your design, should your needle be lined up to center cross hairs before you start the design. You have been a great help, thank you. Pat

I line my needle up with where the design starts… I only use the stabilizer as a template so it’s not in the quilt…❤️

Thank for your tips on the newer models from Bernina. Yes, seeing the screen shots showing you making changes is crucial! And your voice is very pleasant for videos too. I just found your video. Thanks so much! I never thought I could quilt. My quilt shop only shows the Bernina’s with pin point.... you have given me confidence to start! How does the Bernina do when you sew off the quilt? Do you stop the machine? Thanks in advance for letting me know how the Bernina 700 will handle this problem! Thanks again!

Love your videos on Edge to Edge = just purchased the Monster for my Bernina 790.. One question - Do you actually mark your columns ? Like by using a water erasable fabric marker or other ? Wondering how you make sure your columns are straight and square. Thank you for the videos...very educational.

Happy New Year. This is a wonderful tutorial. I was just browsing KZfaq and discovered you. I have a 770qe and don't use the embroidery module very much because I have no idea what I am doing. Thanks to your series, I am going to learn now! I am a visual learner so this is perfect. You mention that you use your Jumbo hoop a lot. I was told that the jumbo hoop does not work on the 770. I can't wait to hear from you because there are so many patterns that ask for the Jumbo hoop. I need to look into the yellow bobbin case so that I can avoid tension problems. Is it very expensive? I am going to watch all your tutorials at my machine so I can learn how to use it instead of just making masks and scrub caps (which I have become really good at) LOL Thanks again for taking so much of your time to produce these tutorials.

Happy new year to you too! The jumbo hoop does work on the 770 however, you do loose just a little bit of stitching space on the left side of the hoop... I’ve been able to stitch most any large design using my jumbo hoop.. a few I had to reduce by 5 or 10 percent but it does work and is a wonderful hoop...❤️

Very glad I found this video. I purchased a class with Amelie Scott teaching this method. I stitched the design out on stabilizer and and a quilt sandwich. I used the same weight threads you did and 80/12 quilting needle. A tiny bit of the upper thread is pulling, just dots, to the back, I’m making a reversible table topper quilt. You mentioned using a high tension bobbin. I’m using a Husqvarna Viking Brilliance with the metal hoop. They don’t have such a bobbin. Would you recommend changing the default tension? Or using the same 49 wt thread in the bobbin? Also you mentioned resizing the design in your software. Do you think combining these designs. Either a:a for column, or a:b for rows to possibly reduce re-hooping? BTW, when I first looked at your perfectly pieced quilt top, I thought Christmas!

Hi Laura! Bernina makes a special bobbin that is high tension for free motion quilting and embroidery so I use that.... you could try tightening your bobbin tension a tiny bit and see if that helps...if... you resize any design I would not go very far in one direction or the other... and no more than 20%...

Love your video. I have a babylock Altair and ordered a Magnetic hoop. Alot of work using reg. hoop. Not sure if they make the magnetic hoop for Bernia yet.

Hi chervil....I don’t want the machine to cut my thread so that I can take the thread tails and knot them by hand and bury them in the quilt sandwich as per normal hand quilting techniques so that my quilt looks wonderful on both front and back and I am confident that no threads will ever come undone...❤️

You can quilt any size quilt this way as long as your machine has a large throat space…❤️

How do you decide which hoops to use...could a wider hoop been used for your design or is it best to always match. I only have what hoops I got with the machine and just ordered a larger hoop from DIME, but don't have that long thinner one you're using.

I would really like to know what the little helper thing is that you mention, that helps you line up the bottom hoop with the top, because I really struggle with that. What do you mean by burping the hoop? Do you mean, sort of, countersinking it? Is True Grid a stabilizer? Wow, I am impressed by your patience. Thanks

The helper I mentioned is called a hoop master...they run about 125.00 dollars...yes, burping the hoop is exactly like countersinking...true grid is actually a pattern tracing/alteration tool...it is a woven product but not interfacing...glad you enjoyed the video!❤️

My machine is a 12 needle, industrial machine, and even tho I love it, I can't always figure out the settings. But watching how you are doing it really helped me out. I have been kind of stressed with all the technology, and I need to just calm down and try again. lol I don't think I can use a hoop master on my machine but I will look into it. Hi Debbie...I just used sew in light weight interfacing to make the templates....I do use the magnetic dime snap hoop to quilt large quilts on my 770...❤️

Hi sherry…. The design has beginning and ending spots.. so when I went to the next row/column I flipped the design and set my needle to “begin at the end of the previous design” hope this helps… I have several videos on ETE quilting here on my channel.. look for those and see if you find them helpful…❤️

Hi there, hoping you get this comment since it has been quite sometime since you filmed the video. I just found you while surfing. I have done several of Amelie Scott designs but have always followed her instructions for columns. I am trying to figure out since you quilted in horizontal rows how you got the next row of designs to line up with the previous rows because there would not be an ending point from the previous row for the next design to start below it. I hope this makes sense. Your little quilt looks great! I thank you for a very good tutorial!

Hi Karen…. The designs only connect side to side so on the next row I just put the template on slightly below the row above and lined everything up…

When you have to adjust your sewing machine, it would be helpful if you move the camera so we can see what you are adjusting . I am relearning the embroidery part of my Bernina from a health “break” of seven months. I have some problems with knowing how to adjust the placement of the needle within the embroidery design.
