• Boudicca & The Great B...
In the year 1013, Sweyn Forkbeard, the powerful Viking King of both Norway and Denmark invaded England and usurped the throne of King Æthelred. Sweyn led a huge force of Danish and Norse raiders, many of whom were still pagan warriors who worshipped the pantheon of Norse Gods. Upon Sweyn’s death later that year however, Æthelred, despite being remembered as ‘the unready’; meaning bad counsel, was invited back to reclaim the throne of England. Sweyn’s young son Cnut however had other ideas, and amassed himself a large army out of the ashes of his fathers and launched his own invasion. England was in turmoil. For the first time since the time of the Great Heathen Army well one hundred years before during the time of Æthelred’s ancestor, Alfred the Great, the very survival of England hung in the balance against an onslaught of Vikings, this time led by a King. Except this time, England had no great defender such as Alfred. Æthelred was renowned as being a weak ruler. He was ruthless, but indecisive and pursued a policy of appeasement rather than organising a decisive campaign against the invaders.
Æthelred died in 1016 however and a very different man, his young son Edmund, seized the throne for himself. It was Edmund who would assemble an English force to push back the Vikings to the sea. Edmund was a warrior prince, he had spent much of his life upon the battlefield, and amassed a small fortune of weapons and armour, most notably wielding a great longsword once possessed by Offa, the revered Anglo-Saxon King of Mercia from centuries before. After securing the throne of Wessex after defeating the English elite who had sided with Cnut after Æthelred's death, Edmund pushed forward, defeating Cnut time and time again, relieving his siege of London, before finally meeting him for once last decisive battle at Assandun. In the years to follow, Edmund would be remembered under a very different title to his father, he was given a name which reflected his valour in battle and his courage. Edmund Ironside.

I’ve recently read what I would call the saga of the lives of Aethelred the Unready, Svein Forkbeard, Cnut the Great, Edmund Ironsides, and the kids of all those mentioned. And I don’t know why anyone hadn’t told me before, but it’s one of the most heartbreaking, absolute best stories in history. What happened to the family of Alfred the Great is a tragedy, but one hell of a story.
@judsonwall8615

@dane Make sure to follow the infant kids of Edmund Ironsides lives. The last of the line of Alfred the Great (on the male side, at least) died in a cabin in the woods of northern England as an old, lonely man. He tried his best for a while to fight William the conqueror after Hastings, but eventually bent the knee and ended up working for his kids, going on a pilgrimage journey to Italy, and living out his old age in the north. But yeah, William the conqueror could’ve never happened without Svein Forkbeard.

It's unlikely he did tbh. More likely he was targeted by a planned assault of four knights during the battle, who had sworn to take him out. It was better propaganda to portray an arrow, as it would appear as an 'act of God', and reinforce Williams claims that he was an 'oath-breaker'.

Weak weak king, usless, should have named Edgar Atheling his heir. The whole claim that William had would have been blown out of the water. Edgar Atheling was a truer heir because he was decended from an older child of Ethelred, so a truer heir than Edward the Confessor himself, nevermind William of Normandy. Harold had no claim at all.

I despise that in the American schooling system from 1st grade all the way until college we learned such a tiny bit of history, I may be biased because history was always my favorite. For our entire School career with the exception of Greece and Rome we basically rush and gloss over all of world history right up until the discovery of the Americas ( and even then we learn complete inaccuracies about the discovery. And yes i get if you're taking us history, but we learn world history, but there was so much unbelievable and amazing history before the us. Even in us history I feel we have to go all the way back to antiquity because we can draw direct lines from the thousands of years before America and see how they directly affected the us today. It's just a shame, I'm us history we get pre revolution then a ton of American revolution and war of 1812 ( which is a joke) and so on. Meanwhile is the 15 years of social studies classes we were never once told about the 30 years war or even the humdred years war. I could've asked anyone in my highschool if they knew what the 30,80 and 100 years wars were and I guarantee 99 percent would have no idea which is baffling. Arguably and in my opinion I truly believe the 30 and 100 years wars had more impact on the development of America even more so than the American revolution and especially the war of 1812. It's sad mad....even just English history have thousands of years of intriguing and amazing history. I don't know I just think it's a failure of our systems. If there were any way to do it I truly think that the us and United kingdom should learn domestic history and then in 11th and 12 the grade have teachers from the UK teach. American students world or at least European history and vice versa with American teachers in europe

Forkbeards final army was probably more than just Danish-Norwegian . There have through Sweins wife ,a swedish queen also been swedes.There very probably also has been slavic troops from Proto-Poland and/or from the northern coasts of Pommerania. Probably he also had welsh troops. Knud and swein both died young ,and there has been speculation in Denmark if they had a seldom genetic disease which made them die so young. If Swein and after him Knud had reached a higher age ,the world maybe would look different now, Had Knud reached an age of 75 he first would have died in 1070. A long life for Knud had made Norman invasion impossible and stopped much Viking activity . For the anglo-saxon farmers this probably had been the best option ,if one considers what happend after norman conquest.
